Training Hearts Pledge

We are a Christian family desiring to raise our children with the primary focus of Training their Hearts.

• "I have no greater joy, than to hear my children walk in truth. III John 1:4

• "Train up the child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

• "Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always so that it might go well with them and their children forever!" Deuteronomy 5:29

Still here with more HS questions (again)

Just a quick update to let ya'll know we are still here . I have family ( my dad and two little brothers)  in from Chicago this week. They came in on Saturday last week and will be here until Friday or Saturday this week. Hence the reason for no blogging. I have two younger brothers that are the same age as two of my children and get to see them maybe once or twice a year so we try and make good of every minute we have together. Anyway, I know I have been tagged and even given an award from a few of ya'll and I will be getting to those soon as I have a little more time between school and visiting.

We are still doing school even with family here. I homeschool the other children so I figure we will just have shorter days this week. Instead of schooling until 3pm we are stopping  until 1pm. e have done some outside activities that include a lot of bird watching. I took pics and will post them sometime later too. I really like the Aleks math so far. I only signed up for the free trial but will probably continue to stay on with it. Seems like the dc like it so that works for me.

My oldest son just left to go out of town with my mother for the next five days. He is going to get to see cousins ( on my side) that he has not seen since 05 during our Hurricane Katrina get-away. These boys are all very close in age and have changed so much in the last few years. I can't wait to see the pics!

I have a question for some of you seasoned homeschoolers with high school students. My oldest who is fifiteen is really disliking being homeschooled. To the point that he just will barely try and do his work. He is doing the Alpha Omega SOS900. At first he did well but then within a month he just stopped trying. His grades are terrible. I mean D's and F's with an occasional "C".  I am unsure of where to go from here right now. I want to find a curriculum ( or whatever) that would be of interest to him so that he would be more inclined to do it.  I realize that I can not, at this age, make him get good grades. What I would like to do is find a way to get him more interested in his education. I would like to find a more relaxed approach to his high school. I don't have a plan set out for his 4 yrs of high school. We just decided (felt very led) we would do this and did it. I am still just going at it one day at a time. I get on here and search and get lost in all of what is out there.

Anyway, there's the update for now. I know I have missed a few TT's and some BFS assignments too. I'll try and catch up or maybe just pick up where we are now  and continue soon. Be blessed,

Stacy

I hope you have fun seeing the family. A lot of my family is from Chicago and Suburbs around. As far as your highschooler goes I am not there yet. I will pray for direction for you. All I can suggest is, pray like crazy for a change of heart:) I am sure God will show you the root of his behavior. No matter what our age, it is always a heart issue. Enjoy your family time.

Feb. 21, 2008 - Hope that your visit is pleasant...

As far as your teenager is concerned,I'm sorry I have no sage advice to offer. When my oldest was in HS it was a nightmare. He was in private school and I was his teacher for 2 of those years. His curriculumn was simalar to Alpha Omega (ACE Paces). He just hated to do the work. After another year and 1/2 of struggles, we took him out and finished his HS education by homeschooling him. He finished his PACEs but we added other more hands on life skill type courses to get him the needed credits. He enjoyed this more. Now that he has been out of school for 3 years he tells me that he wishes he had put more effort in his studies. He is hard on his brother and sister now and encourages them to do thier best. Hind sight is of no use when you are living through it though. I wish there was a remedy, but I think all we can do is pray without ceasing and let God do the rest. Follow your heart because I know that you are striving to do what God wants you to do. (Sorry such a long comment)

Stacy,
I hope you have a wonderful visit with your family. :-) About your son - my son is also a freshman this year and I went into this year confident that he would put a lot of effort into his work. Well I was a little disappointed. I spoke with dh and we decided the boy needed a talking to. We have talked two him several times now about what exactly he is preparing for - LIFE. We let him know that how he studies now will probably determine how he will study in college. We let him know that a lot will be required of him and that his grades are going to reflect who he is. I know not all students are A students but this boy is very close if not an A student. He is smart. He has changed some since the time we spoke to him. Ultimately I do believe it is a heart issue. It could be his curriculum he isn't enjoying or being fulfilled from it etc. I would encourage prayer and then have a talk with him.

Raising them isn't easy but thankfully we do not have to do it alone...
Blessings & {{{{Hugs}}}}

Academics are important, but I think having his heart is most important . You may already have his heart and he may just find the computer boring. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't SOS primarily seatwork done on the computer? My boys especially, seem to prefer more hands on activities. Is he interested in anything in particular? I know the Lord will direct you. I will be praying for you. Randi

Feb. 24, 2008 - School problems

Posted by Mom2zjh

Hi Stacy,
I too have been having problems getting my older one more interested (visit my blog to read the whole ordeal). If and when you get some feedback could you let me know? Also I tried the Aleks and that is where the assesment came in that I was speaking of on my blog. My kids liked it but it seemed they had so much to learn on it. Are your kids where they are suppossed to be on it? Also do you have state testing? I am soooo stressing over school right now!!!
Hope you get some answers.
Blessings,
Holly
