Homeschooling Is Life! - This is for the bird (watcher)'s

• Jul. 24, 2005 - This is for the bird (watcher)'s

Isn't he just the ugliest thing you ever saw?  I am sorry, I love birds but I think fledgling Robin's are the most akward, ugly little creations.  Well, some things are so ugly that they are cute too---know what I mean?  Like tadpoles, and baby squirrels and .......wet puppies........um........kids with spagetti all over their faces.......ok, so I have run out of examples.

When we were camping a few weeks back, this cute (ugly) little green caterpillar dropped down out of an aspen tree, right onto our cooking table.  So I promptly did what any good homeschooling mom would do; put it in an empty water bottle, with some leaves.  "Let's take this home and see what it will become!"  So, it turned in to a little brown case and of course my 6 year old kept insisting it looked dead.  Well, it did. But we kept looking at it every day, and it still looked dead.  But this morning, (Fanfare and drumroll please......) I looked in the bottle and the little "case" appeared to have a hole in one end.  And yes, there was a creature in there.  Not a beautiful, colorful butterfly, but just a lowly pale tan looking.......miller moth.

Well, it was still one of God's little miracles, this metamorphosis we witnessed.  A few years back, we found a caterpillar that turned out to be a two-tailed swallowtail.  Now THAT was a treat!  So I took the little miller moth out and put him near the aspens in our yard, and hopefully he will be happy there.

As for this ugly little robin, his birdy parents built their nest in a spruce tree in our neighbors yard.  We enjoyed watching and learning.  Today, we found the nest on the sidewalk---the wind must have blown it out.  It looks very nice in my window box by the front door.

I know you are probably thinking I  shouldn't be calling him so ugly----but after all,  I ran around taking pictures of him didn't I?  So, maybe I don't REALLY think he is so awfully ugly....right?......

Talk to you later!

Nancy

the pics of the baby starling that visited us? Now THAT is an ugly bird! Baby robins are ugly, but this bug-eyed creature blew them away. Feet as big as his body, almost. And they have a horrible squawk, too. Not the chirp of a baby robin - more like an incessant shriek. Especially annoying when it's standing at your sliding glass door shrieking at its own reflection.

I should post a pic to my blog. Then we could have a contest of whose baby bird is uglier. :-)

to call those poor little birds "ugly". Maybe you could call them unique looking. : )

I blogged a long time ago about a friend who ordered monarch butteflies as caterpillars. One was a "late bloomer" and when mom finally thought it was ready to fly, she took it outside to release it. Unfortunately a very hungry bird quickly swooped down and had a free breakfast!

Homeschooling just brings us a whole bunch of adventures that some people miss out on, doesn't it?

I didn't want to steal all the comments. I thought we'd both come out ahead on this deal, LOL. However, you can tell your kids that it IS a real bird and I will try to post some other pics of it tomorrow so they can see from other angles. That was by far the ugliest pose, so of course I had to use that one. But it's pretty ugly no matter how you look at it. :-) Maybe if you could zoom in on your bird it's ugliness would shine a bit more? If nothing else, I guess I've convinced you even further of your need to go digital. 7 megapixels, baby. Wins photo smack-downs. Can't beat that with a stick.

Tell you what, since I'm such a good sport, I will award you with that custom template prize anyway. Look at your blog - you have it already!! I work fast. Muahahaha!

We have those little robins over where we are too... and finches. We watched one a year ago build a nest in the tree next to our front window.

I remember when I was staying the night as a child with my grandma and grandpa. We were driving somewhere and as we were leaving their driveway this baby bird fell down in front of the car.. baby magpie's are UGLY!

It broke its wing. My grandmother nursed it back to health and kept it! I had the pleasure of naming it "George"... Did you know magpies can talk?? George did! "Pretty Lady", "George hungry.." "George pretty bird!" "He even sang "Happy Birthday!" and when my grandmother played her indian pow wow records he danced!! He was like a Macaw.. just not as 'glorified!"

I do have to agree... Jodi's baby bird is hideous! LOL

Love,
Di

I love your story about the moth.... even little brown moths can be a blessing in disguise!
Thank you so much for your encouragement today... God is so merciful to give me friends (new homeschooling ones, too) to stand in the gap for a sister in Christ.

God bless you greatly!

Holli P.S. We have a new little wren family that we are so enjoying watching! Those little open beaks when Mom and Dad show up with dinner are priceless!

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 17, 14, 12 and 10 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
