• May. 17, 2006 - The topic is: organization

Hi!  I hope you will take a moment to stop over at Homeschooling Is Life on the Front Porch.  I will have a new post there, tomorrow (or actually, late tonight because that Nancy Carter is really on the ball!) on the topic of un-schoolers and dis-organization.

Don't forget that by using the term "unschooler" we (I) have allowed myself to jump smack dab in the middle of a huge mostly negative argument about how horrible and stupid unschoolers are.  You see, we are a misaligned bunch.  Misaligned, and misunderstood.  Many folks out there think that if we call ourselves "unschoolers" that we do nothing, know nothing and are really dumb.  I hope someday we can get past the labels.

We call ourselves un-schoolers, sometimes, because we are not trying to do institutional school to our children.  Get it?

So if this has you a bit confused, just check out the archives of Thursday's front porch entries, and see what I mean.  It's all about semantics.

*********

So back to the topic of today.  I mentioned "Flylady" on my post for this weeks front porch, along with several other organizational programs.  If you are at all familiar with the Fly gal, she does something called the "Super Fling" where you post the pounds of clutter that you have decided to part with, and it helps people who are trying to get rid of excess---sort of like a cheerleading episode.  "We are up to 34,009 pounds of junk!  Yeah!"  That sort of thing.

So while trying to get my kids to do the "fling, thing" I got the idea of this:  what if I pay them by the pound for whatever I can convince them to part with!?  I thought it was a great idea.

I decided to pay them .50 per lb. of stuff.

They filled bags, and bags, and bags...............

Now I am going to have to ask for alms to pay them off!!!

I guess they will do ANYthing, for a little $$$.  Sigh.

I might have to take out a loan to pay these kids off!  Gee, where are all the rich relatives when you need them!?

Homeschooling is Life,

and this un-schooler is not only dis-organized, she's broke!

Nancy

Posted by mijubrifarms
Ha Ha Ha! Sorry, but I'd love to be an unschooler who does nothing for a while. Actually today my calendar is EMPTY! Can you believe it. But I know what you mean. People think that since we're not doing "school" we must not be doing anything. About all that decluttered junk, don't forget to write up all those hours of P.E. or Organizational Skills. I'd have a graph going somewhere and turn it into a contest and let you young ones keep up on the bar graph. But, that's me. Actually, I think we need to start posting on how to UNschool - making life meaningful and teachable: like when I made DH keep track of all her bowling scores and taught her how to make line graphs and pie charts! Hmmmmm, I just might have a topic for my own blog now. What do you think? Happy Decluttering.

I like that idea! $.50 per pound... I'd probably have to take a loan out too! LOL.

We didn't get to the park today. We went out to my moms (much cooler where she lives). We have a garden out there we started last week. The radishes are peeking out of the ground. =) Kids played in the water and got drenched. Fun!

Baby is due Aug. 16th-ish.

Hugs,
Di

Just wanted to say thanks for a GREAT gift. I'm still laughing and reading comments. You got my site meter to go up by about 65 hits! These are page loads, not visitors, but it's still great. I don't know how far your birdie arms flew, but I'm up to 15 comments! Thanks again.

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 16, 13, 11 and 9 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
