• Jun. 6, 2006 - It's a Wonderful (Homeschooling) Life!

Ok, wait a minute.  What's with the Christmasy theme---it's only June!  I guess it's so hot that I am just dreaming of snow.......and well, I was just attempting to come up with a catchy title for what I want to say....I thought of "Searching for the Perfect Homeschool." But, that one has already been taken, I think.  Or, "Living In the Imperfect Homeschool."  But I don't want to take anything away from dear Barbara!

So I will stick with the title above.

I would love to say that wonderful is the most apropos term for our homeschool today.....actually, I would love to be able to say that it is more than wonderful, all the time.  But reality has a way of getting in the way of it being wonderful, most of the time.  And to be truthful, maybe I should change the word "reality" to "Mom."  Unfortunatly, I do get in the way of things being wonderful around here.

Now, this isn't intended to be a self-flagellating entry.  Its purpose is that hopefully I can help someone else to work through some of the things that have been on my mind these last few days.

There have been a lot of discussions going on in various homeschooling circles about year end programs, re-analysis of what went right (or not) and whether or not to keep on homeschooling through the Summer months.

 It is always a good thing to evaluate progress, celebrate achievement, and plan for the future!  But, I think sometimes we get caught up in the "World's" definition of progress, achievement, and goal setting.  It's not hard to do---especially with so many of us homeschooling Mom's having been the product of public education.  As much as we try to break free from those old tapes, "resistance is futile."

 (I suppose I am talking to you older homeschool Mom's out there.  You second generation homeschool young Moms are doing fine, so you can stop reading now.  LOL)

Researchers have told us that our children have an innate desire and drive to learn.  They are little "learning machines."  But we can very quickly put those little learning machines out of commission, just by forcing them to learn for any other reason than just the sheer delight of it!  There will come a day, soon enough, when our children learn because they absolutely need the information.  But for some reason, we have been ingrained to think we have to create or comply with an artificial reason for them to do "educational activities."

Life has enough "curriculum" to last all of our days, without contriving and comparing and competing and creating a false context for knowledge.  Most of the media that we are bombarded with daily is not necessary!  Before you write me off as a wacko (which you probably already have, if you know me personally~ha-ha) just think of this:  There is a time and a season and a purpose for everything under heaven.  Yes, it says that right there in Ecclesiastes 3.

1 To everything there is a season,
      A time for every purpose under heaven:

       2 A time to be born,
And a time to die;
      A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
       3 A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
      A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
       4 A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
      A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
       5 A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
      A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
       6 A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
      A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
       7 A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
      A time to keep silence,
And a time to speak;
       8 A time to love,
And a time to hate;
      A time of war,
And a time of peace.

  We don't control the time, or the season, OR the purpose.  Our Father in heaven does.  He is involved in our lives, and working things out on our behalf, every day.  Remember the verse in the Law that tells us how to teach our children?  (And what to teach them?)

It's the part about how we are to teach them all about the Lord God Almighty, and how we are to talk to them when we rise up, sit down, walk by the way, and when we lie down.  All the time, all about Him.  And this is the reason:  He has the answers to all those questions in the verse in Ecclesiastes.  He will tell us, and show us how to respond to each new time and season in our lives.

So while we are all fretting, (at least I have been, hence this post to get my head on straight) about ceremonies, and standards and scopes and goals and trying to get out of the rut we were brought up in, there has been someone else directing our paths.

 Have you been wondering too, "What on earth am I supposed to be doing today!!??"  I have.  And if you have this dilemma too, here is our answer.  If we would just get out of His way so we can see where He is leading us, well, He will lead us.

"As for God, His way is perfect;  the Word of the Lord is tried:  He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him.  For who is God save the Lord:  Or who is a rock save our God?  It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect."

 Psalm 18:30-32

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts".

 Isaiah 55:8-9

Homeschooling IS a Wonderful Life!

Thank you for this wonderful message and the one you gave on my blogg. I knew God would speak threw you. You are soooo in a place that I use to be in 4 years ago. Three years ago I enrolled in a school Distance Learning Program. We homeschooled but it was under an unbrella of a school but we had to show we were accomplishing learning outcomes that were deamed by the Ministry of Education of British Columbia, Canada. It almost tore me apart. I wasn't going to do it again for a second year but I felt called to make sure there was a Chistian DL program. Here in BC if your not in a Christian program you are not legally allowed to use christian material. So I helped a program in my area to start. This last year I went back to registration that I only have to tell my kids names , ages, gender, and personal identification number. No hoops to jump. I want to go back to loving and leaning again. I don't want to be worried what other think , if we are doing the job well enough or not. What you posted spoke right into that and I thank you for everything you said. Thank you. (0:

you know... I was going to skim all my favorite bloggers... I wasn't hardly going to read this one... no time and all that. BUT I decided to keep it on my screen for later. SO glad I did!!

Of course, I have a few other issues to deal with on top of those preconceived ideas... self centeredness with my time, laziness, TV (yup, Mr Rogers is on right now, just so I can write a post!!)

Thanks muchly!!

We all have those kinds of struggles, right ladies??? I know I do. But I am thankful that the Lord is always working on me to be a better steward of the time we have. It's very easy to get caught up in ourselves, in slothfulness, and in reading blogs! That is touchy subject because I don't want to entice any moms away from their duty and responsibility---time with the Lord, and time with their family. My prayer is that any words written here will be acceptable in His sight!

We all need little breaks though, and I pray that yours was a blessing, and that it didn't glorify me in any way, but that it drew you closer to God somehow.

Blessings!!! Thanks for your encouragment to me,
Nancy

Nancy - wonderful thoughts :) I am still trying to decide if we will "school" much during the summer - too many trips planned b/t August and December ;) LOL I am so glad that God has a plan for our lives in EVERY season, sometimes I think it sure would be nice to know it though ;) Although, I am sure I am better off not knowing it! I might fight Him more knowing my nature :( I am enjoying the "assessing" conversations that have been going on lately. It helps to remember why we are on this journey in the first place and I, for one, don't take the time to remember that daily! I love that God has my children's education all planned out (at times VERY differently than I do!) and that when I take the time to listen I can actually know what tools He wants me to use during that season of our lives and I just might learn something too! I am so glad that my children have a love of learning and a love for THEIR LORD and their family as well :) I am positive they would not have all that if I did not get to be the assistant guide on their journey :) Thanks for this very specific reminder, "If we would just get out of His way so we can see where He is leading us, well, He will lead us."

I just got back the standardized test scores (we're required to test on certian years in my state). I was disappointed when my very bright young son came back with average scores--then I had to remind myself that I've always chosen a free, growing approach, not an approach with a lot of workbooks or structure learning in the younger grades. This approach doesn't teach for the test . . . he's doing fine. :o)

I can't seem to get my username to work on homeschoolblogger . . . still trying to figure out how to connect with you ladies over here, but my other blog is www.gracereign.blogspot.com

Wow, Nancy, I sure enjoyed your post. What a pleasure to read.......it's so obvious that you appreciate this time with your children, even when it doesn't go perfectly. I know it's a cliche, but this time with our children is so fleeting. Those who understand what a blessing it is can truly enjoy every minute of it, the good times and the hard times. Sounds like you get it :)

Thanks for sharing that!

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 16, 13, 11 and 9 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
