• Sep. 1, 2005 - Roy Rogers to the Rescue!

After reading about Roy Rogers in an interview with his son, Dusty (several issues back in The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, ) I became very interested in this old hollywood cowboy---because I found out that he wasn't so "hollywood" after all.  My boys, of course are TOTALLY into the cowboy thing.  It is so funny to see them in their camo's and cowboy hats.  I just don't have the heart to say a word about it.

Anyhow, we have run the gamut from The Rifleman, to the Lone Ranger, (you should have heard this discourse between my two girls :"who do you think is more handsome, Lucas McCain, or the Lone Ranger?", says 8 year old sister to 13 year old sister~ who promptly replies, "Well, how do I know?  Nobody even knows what the Lone Ranger looks like!")

And so, kemosabe, what I (Mom) say to that:  "Where on earth did these girls get THAT idea in the first place."  Yikes. There will be NO drooling over handsome cowboys around here, unless Dad happens to wear his cowboy boots and his......um, well the Indiana Jones hat----I seem to see a trend here in the accessories department......but I digress.

But back to Roy Rogers, (who I must admit, was quite the flashy cowpoke in his day,) and believe it or not, was a little before my time.  I remember Roy, but not the young Roy----and today we watched a remastered digitized version of one of the original Roy Rogers Shows that he and Dale Evans produced together.  It was quite good.  Oh, there was the usual shootem up, with some really good cowboy fisticuffs---but the clincher for me was the last line of the show.

The antagonist, an evil rancher had kidnapped the soon to be mother of a child---the grandson of his arch enemy that he drove off the land years before.  His own evil son had come to find him, and barging in the house---his own father turned and shot him---not knowing it was his son.  Dale Evans comes out to announce that the original land owners son, has just become a father, but sees that the evil man has just killed his only (evil) son.

(I know, I know, I am not Roper or Ebert or whoever those people are that discuss the movies.)

So back to the show.  Dale Evans sees the anquished father swooning over his sons demise.  She says she is sorry,  then says:  "But the Bible says that the wages of sin is death." And then upon hearing the baby cry in the other room, adds:  "But the gift of God is eternal life though Jesus Christ."

The End

Happy Trails to you, until we meet again.....................

Nancy

Enjoyed your review of the movie! It sounds like it was a good story plot, especially the ending where they shed the TRUTH on the situation. We used to watch the Roy Rogers shows on Saturday mornings when we were kids. I just happened upon your blog-site and decided to check your profile. I was excited to find that you were born on the same date as a dear 'double cousin' of mine. Also, Colorado is a favorite place of mine. We used to go out and camp in the mountains every summer when I was a kid. Now, when the hot summer sun gets to beating down on us here in the Iowa plains, I get to longing for the cool Colorado mountains again. Maybe someday... :-)

It is on the Roy Rogers Show Vol. 3, "Ranch War" is the name of the episode.
Let me know if you can't find it and want to borrow it.

Wow! Nancy, our family is moving to Colorado Springs around Oct. 17th--got your site from Candace. This is awesome! We LOVE Roy Rogers!! Our son collects his movies, and other stuff, and we went to Branson, MO for the sole reason of going to the Roy Rogers Museum which is great. We had the opportunity of seeing Dusty Rogers' show and getting a picture of him with our son. Roy Rogers has been a good "hero" for our son for a number of years even still at the age of 13! I look forward to meeting you in person.

My MIL ADORES the old cowboy movies and music. When we do holidays at her house we listen to Sons of the Pioneers and stuff like that. I'll have to look for these for her!

Pretty cool that the moral of the story was actually a MORAL and not some feel good claptrap. Right on!

I bought the first 9 episodes of the Lone Ranger on DVD the other day for $1.00. My kids LOVE them!

One night we are all sitting around and I ask what should we do. J.D. and Anna shout "Watch the Lone Ranger!"
My husband, who was shocked at this looked at me and said, "I never thought our kids would LOVE to watch the Lone Ranger!"

BUT there have been a few times I felt the show got a bit violent, so be vigilant----(no, I didn't say be a vigilante!)
.......I mean, sure there are lots of fake gunfights and stuff :) but once there was someone stabbed and that really bothered me a lot more than the gun stuff. Call me nuts, but it was too realistic.

Anyhow, maybe I need to blog on the merits of "Lassie" next time.....

Still previewing, still censoring, and still keeping the kids focused on Jesus......but enjoying "entertainment technology" once in a while.

Hugs,
Nancy

Hi again! You know, I thought I had you on my friends list, too, but I didn't. I had just started when you first commented on my blog, so I wonder if I did something weird then because I didn't understand the system yet?

Anyway, I'm glad you're on the list now!

I had no idea there were legions of Roy Rogers fans running around today! Your "accessories" comment cracked me up!That's awesome! Somehow we missed all that with my boys - they were always running around with light sabers and such . . . I know I know. Don't go there.

Your movie review was hilarious!!!! I totally didn't follow what you were saying but LOVED the ending anyway. Roper and Eber indeed! I think you should do a movie review column for TOS! LOL!

Blessings dear!

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 16, 13, 11 and 9 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
