Hair Cutting

• Sep. 10, 2005 - It's my Birthday and I'll cry if I want to! (and if I don't get any poems, I will)

Whoever said that blogs couldn't be self-serving didn't have a clue!  Actually, I don't know that anyone ever said that, but it sounded like a good way to start out this one.

I had a pretty sad day yesterday, and I just want to say thank you to all the wonderful people out there in cyberland who took the time to encourage me.  God is Good!

We got off to a great start today, my family took me out to breakfast at a wonderful little restaurant in Green Mountain Falls, called "The Pantry."  We shared two big plates full of biscuits and gravy, fried potatoes and a huge pancake called "the Mother Lode."  Then we headed to the little pond nearby, and it has this lovely gazebo out on an island in the middle of it.  The plaque there says it was built in 1880 (I think) and the only way to get to it was by boat until they built a bridge there in 1930!  It is a beautiful place to go.  There was actually a wedding scheduled there from 2:00 to 4:00 today.......just finished up it it seems......and while we were there I was thinking; What a great day for a wedding!  On my BIRTHDAY!!!  Haha. See, this is a self-serving blog.

There is this tradition at The Old Schoolhouse Magazine (ahem, that everyone seems to have forgotten today,) that whenever there is a birthday celebrated, the lucky celebrant is  inundated with very witty, crazy, silly and downright awful, I mean very well intentioned poetry from fellow staff and volunteers.  Well, today, (since THEY all forgot) I am inlisting the help of YOU my dear blogging buddies.  Now is your chance to shine!  Now is your chance to bless me or annoy me (you choose) with an original poem of you very own.

So, while I enjoy a few moments of peace here at home, all by myself (waiting for my kids and hubby to come back from the DOLLAR store where they are buying me some priceless little trinkets) I will be anticipating some heartfelt prose coming my way.

C'mon, if you weren't up for a challenge, then WHY are you homeschooling????

See, there you have it, no good excuse accepted.  Write me a poem.

Haiku is fun.  Or prose is nice---you don't have to rhyme if you don't want to.

But please, if you write a limerick, please remember I don't live in Nantucket.

Waiting very patiently,

Nancy

Well happy birthday, Nancy

The words don't seem to flow it ree

But, hope your day was great
In spite of all you ate
And that this year's your best
Now go and get some rest!

Lame...I know..don't say I didn't warn you...but, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR NANCY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! ;)

• Sep. 10, 2005 - Eleanor, how did you know how much I ate???

Posted by ByHisGraceInColorado
Oh, um---yeah, I told wrote about breakfast didn't I!? Well, then my family took me out for Mexican food, my favorite kind. They even sang for me. It was so nice! Then we came home (stuffed) and I had to wait out front for some sneaky reason, then I was led into the back yard where my family had decorated the playhouse and had a red velvet cake, coffee (organic!) and a new coffee maker, (dual purpose gift, since our old one bit the dust) AND a dozen red roses waiting for me.
I am SO SPOILED ROTTEN.

And you have just won the prize for the first poem of the day. Of course, Lotsapets beat you to the BD wish, so she gets a big hug too. And your poem was fabulous!! Thanks you two!

Happy, happy day. :)

• Sep. 10, 2005 - A Birthday Poem for YOU

Posted by TOSPUBLISHER
Oh Dear Nancy,
You know I cannot write a poem,
Yet, I must...er, I must.
Oh, if only I could ... um, foam.

If I were rabid, I could foam,
Alas, I am not rabid.
Harken, I hear a bird sing,
In the distance...in the habitat(?)

So yes, alas, a birthday lass,
You are.
Um, yes. Alas, harken where art thou hither?
I'm a poet, and did not know it. (wow that rhymed).

How I wish I could express my heartfelt
Wishes on your special day,
Come hither, I will make you a sandwich.
Someday....someday. Yes, someday. (like maybe at the staff picnic in the summer)

And so I must end,
This tragic attempt at prose,
I suppose, oh I suppose. Yes, I suppose. Only a rose such as you...is um, yes.

Thank you good fans, everywhere. Thank you. I do try. It is so fun to be a poet, once you are successful at these sorts of things...maybe I will go into playwriting or choreography, perhaps something very Solid Gold, no, a milk maid. Someone who composes....something meaningful and deep, haiku perhaps...while milking goats in the Smoky Mts, up high, in the sky. Um...er. Yeah. (taking bow, exiting dramatically). HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY DEAR FRIEND!!!

A sweet kindred spirit that shares my name,
A dear Christian sister that churches the same.

A heart that is full of God's precious grace
and eyes turned looking straight to God's face.

She blesses so many just by sharing from her heart
I'm so glad this blog she did start.

Who would have known that God would use HSB
to introduce a dear friend from Colorado to me?

So happy birthday dear Nancy. Thanks for just being you.
May God's richly bless you in all that you do.

Love,
Nancy

Oh, Kate (wiping a tear) ... I am so inspired. Your poem...it was so...so, inspiring. How I wish, only for a moment....a mere second...that I could write poems like you. The way you rhymed Nancy's name (not twice, but thrice!) was so phenomenal to me. It was an experience I shall never forget. I am forever thankful.

• Sep. 10, 2005 - Birthday Lament

Posted by MiddleEarthMom
I wish that I could now compose
a poem as lovely as a rose--
A sonnet that would spread some grace
Upon your sweet and aging face.

I wish that I could now express
My deep desire that God would bless
And grant you many years ahead
To grayer grow before you're dead.

I wish that I could now extend
These birthday wishes to you, friend.
I hope the years will kinder be
To you than they have been to me.

Alas, I cannot quite express
The friendship that I would confess.
But though these words be but poor verse,
At least, you know, you have seen worse.

Mia, you SO stole that from me. Oh my goodness, that is absolutely poem-idea-stealing. I cannot BELIEVE you! You took the word "rose" and "alas"...you are so dead.

Wow, I am humbled (obviously needed) and blessed. These are super! You'se guys all outdid yourselves, as usual.

Yes I guess I did get a little antsy, Kate.....but at least your rhymes were better than "Poem and Foam."

and Nancy, that is so precious! I am glad we met too!!! Julie, I won't even think of deleting that gem! And Mia, please quit using those four letter words--gray and aging (so what if that is 5 letters.) But I loved it anyway, even if you did have to get inspiration from Gena. Someday, you will learn to write poety half as well as she does. :-/
Dianna, I am not up at 4:39 because of the coffee----I heard a loud noise and got up to investigate. And Heather, well, Heather, PhD., is new to this blog thing so she posted her poem with my photo entry. That is ok, really. We all understand.

LOVE YOU ALL!!!! Thanks for blessing me on this crazy date.

This rhyme is late.
My excuse I'll make:

I did not know
it was your birthday. So,

My regards now I pay:
Please enjoy even today.

It's nice to meet you,
and now say "Adieu!"

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 16, 13, 11 and 9 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
