• Nov. 29, 2006 - The Subculture of the Subculture

I just saw that line in a blog, but can't remember who to attribute it to!  It was a brilliant assessment.  Let me know if it was you, ok?  My husband and I were talking about it and he said that all homeschoolers "unschool" to one degree or another.  But lines are being drawn in the sand, and we keep talking about it nevertheless.

The unschooling debate goes on, and I do hope people will have an open mind about it.  Look at all sides of the issue before you condemn it.  Talk to some radical unschoolers, talk to some conservative homeschoolers.  I *think* we just might fit into the conservative group.  I dunno.  I really don't like the label thing, and have written about that before.  At any rate, we are all different and we learn and teach differently, our family circumstances are different.  My burning question is;  why does anyone care?  Why do non-homeschool parents (or non-parents) care about what we do?  Why does the local school care?  Why does the NEA care?  Why do newspapers and talk shows care?

I think it is because we have chosen a different path, and it is proving to work for many families.  Homeschooling worries some public school parents, for many reasons.  You ponder that.  It worries the schools because of $$$.  It concerns the NEA because they can't influence those they don't have control over.  Newspapers care because it's a good story,  and if they can't report it accurately and get readers they can sensationalize it and get readers.  Talk shows care because they can get viewers.  How many homeschoolers and non-homeschoolers watched Dr. Phil just so they could see how awful it was?  We are just a curious bunch of humans.

I am sure you can come up with some reasons of your own.  These are just off the top of my head, and I know there are more concrete reasons than mine.  But maybe we just need to "chill" as they say.

Right now, I plan to chill with my kiddos.  They are rehearsing a musical they have put together for their grandparents.  They made sets, put together costumes, picked songs, have completely transformed my living room into a theater.  They are going to record it and make a DVD to send for Christmas, and the deadline is looming.  I love hearing them right now singing in the other room.  A few minutes ago, they were fighting.  We worked through that and are now working together again.  Gee, I can't imagine what it is going to be like when they get out in to the real world......

Blessings!

Oh, I completely agree with you! I find also that some parents whose children are in government schools are a little too concerned with us homeschooling. I can't say this is universally true, but I think some are a bit convicted about their choices... then comes the defensive guilt. I get frustrated though, because I try at all costs not to offend them about their decision and they proceed to slam homeschooling altogether. Have you ever encountered this?

not all my friends homeschool, or think like us or act like us :) (Thankfully!)

I think there can be some conviction there, but it goes both ways. We just have to remember that we don't have the corner market on anything. We are all unique and have to appreciate the differences. If we would just be real, be true to who we are, then we shouldn't have any trouble dealing with others!

Blessings to you!

• Nov. 29, 2006 - Been thinking lately...

Hi Nancy -
I have been thinking about this lately. In school yesterday we talked about the Separatists and why they were called that and what that meant for them and society. We then discussed how we could be considered separatists. Right now the big thing is that we plan to have the baby at home with a midwife. Some people have truy been concerned about our welfare. Some have been offended because they had perfectly fine hospital births (I had 2 of those myself). I think the same goes for those against homeschooling. Granted there are some that are just against it because we are teaching our children to be great citizens and vigilant in all they do. Some I really do beleive think that by homeschooling we are saying that they are bad parents for not homeschooling and not being at home with their kids. I wasnt homeschooled and I dont hink my parents are bad same for DH's parents. Great blog to think on...

Anything that is out of the mainstream or different is the subject of concern for people. The school system is concerned for just the reasons you cite. They are worried about not getting the funding for our students and being able to control the agenda.

I love your idea of a show. I am hosting Christmas here at my house this year and I think I will have the kids do something similar! Thanks for the idea!!

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 16, 13, 11 and 9 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
