Hair Cutting

• Aug. 8, 2007 - Welcome to my blog!

It is so nice to have you visit!  I had the funniest thing happen today.  My kids and I do a work-share on an organic farm and there is another homeschooling Mom doing the same thing there with her two kids.  We have been enjoying getting to know them and on our break time, we usually talk about guess what:  Unschooling!

Today, after we talked a bit she said "She was so glad to meet me because most of the homeschooling Moms she talks to make her feel like she is the worlds biggest under-achiever! "  But  since she met me she doesn't feel that way anymore!

I can't tell you how much I cracked up when she said that!

She didn't mean it in a negative way of course~but it certainly made my day!

What she meant was, that she doesn't fit into the mold of school-at-home, of curriculum driven, or any of those high stress kinds of home schooling lifestyles.  She is learning what is best for her family but still feels like an under-achiever when comparing herself to others.  It happens all the time, and for some Moms, it is ok and they thrive on comparison and competition.

But for some of us that is the antithesis of our homeschooling ideal.  We have to be able to recognize it for what it is and not let it get under our skin, or into our head. The heart of our homeschool is being solid in our belief of what works best for us and then all the rest (comparison and competition) can fade into oblivion.

It's not about curriculum, or standardization, it's about learning who our children are, and helping them learn HOW to learn.  Self sufficiency and self worth, all wrapped up in a neat little package that God Himself ordained and created.  That is what homeschooling is to me.

My new friend and I had talked about scheduling, curriculum, learning styles, stuff like that.  We talked about going with the flow, freedom in our homeschooling, breaking out of preconceived molds and indoctrination.  It is so neat to talk with other Moms!  She also asked me if I ever stop wondering if I am doing the right thing, and I said there are always those nasty doubts and second-guesses that creep in.  There will always be those people and ideas that will come against us for doing what we believe is right for our families.

And I have said it before about my kids and our home education choice; the triumphs and successes are mine to enjoy and the mistakes are my mistakes to make.  Try as they might, nobody can ever take that away from me as long as I have breath!

                                          ~----~-----~-----~

Be sure to get in on this:  Benefit for Tammy Cardwell.  Unbelievable!

And a big thank-you to the Homeschool Minute for blessing me with a mention and a contest!  (Just click on the current newsletter link and don't forget to subscribe to these wonderful e-newsletters!)

Leave me a comment to get in on the contest ok?  And a hearty THANK YOU for everyone who already did!  I appreciate you!

We didn't set a deadline for picking a winner, so there is still time!  You could win a free copy of my E-book "Haircuts for Little Men!"

Homeschooling IS Life!

I just found out about this great little book! What a great idea! I'd love to save money cutting my own boys' hair, but I'm always afraid I'll really mess it up. Thanks for putting this book and contest together.

and someone I'd like to meet. Just bring her over here and we'll go through some UnSchooler Yearbooks. Glad you didn't get rained on at the farm. Speaking of visiting farms, when are you going to come and see my new toy? DD is gone for the weekend, but some quiet, quality, girl time could be fun. What do you say?

How you have blessed me today:
'Self sufficiency and self worth, all wrapped up in a neat little package that God Himself ordained and created. That is what homeschooling is to me.' I'm going to write this down at the top of my planner.

I attended a local homeschool's "meet the teacher"/open house type of event. I'll be teaching a couple of classes this coming fall. After hearing each teacher speak briefly about her college prep expectations, banter endless math facts in seconds, and rave about their abilities to relate the 3, 5, 7, and 11-paragraph essays, I left feeling deflated and discouraged. Am I doing enough? Should we spend more money? Are my kids not as bright as I think?

Although I am definitely not an unschooler (but not curriculum-driven, either, I like to think), it is easy to lose perspective among those who laud a different system of progress and accomplishment than you do. Thank you for a God-sent , and very eloquent, by the way, reminder of what I know we're striving to do in our home.

Nice entry, Nancy. I definitely agree that it has a lot to do with getting to know our children...more than the other "stuff."

OT, but I have a question. How is homeschooling in Colorado? Hubby just got forced to Denver. Not sure how long, but it is nice to know all the issues, anyway.

I love the kind comments.

Dana, CO has a great homeschool law. They did just make a minor annoying adjustment to it, but only if you have a six year old. You must tell the district that you plan to homeschool, but you don't have to "officially" send in your notice of intent until two weeks before you begin your childs homeschool "program" at age seven. You are done when they turn 16, and you have to have covered the basics of reading, writing, speaking, mathematics, history, civics, literature, science, and regular courses of instruction in the constitution of the United States. (not all in the same year!) You must have a minimum of 4 contact hours per day for 172 days per year. There are testing and/or evaluation requirements, but those are not a big deal. Every other "grade" beginning with 3rd. You decide what grade they are in, there isn't an age/grade equivelancy (however you spell that!) with public school. We have a wonderful evaluation option which is different than standardized testing.

I recommend that you go to the Rocky Mountain Education Connection website and read all about it. (Super website!) You can find the links on my Colorado blog (Homeschoolblogger.com/colorado)

Denver is just an hour or so away from us.....would love to have you close by!

Blessings!

Cool! We aren't sure yet how long this is going to be. We may not actually ever move...we'll see how hubby likes it and whether he'll be able to hold the position. If so, it may happen. But we will be coming that way to visit, at any rate!

It would be cool to meet up for a cup of coffee or something!

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 16, 13, 11 and 9 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
