Homeschooling Is Life! - Civil War Ball

• Jan. 15, 2008 - Civil War Ball

Last weekend my two oldest children participated in the Civil War ball put on by Parker Christian Home Educators.  What a wonderful event!  A good time was had by all.  I want to write more about it but for now you will just have to enjoy a couple of photos and imagine how much fun it was!

Yes, she designed and made her dress.  The back has lacing, with grommets and satin ribbon and a big bow.  She also made the bow for her hair, and we had fun searching for some gloves.  (We found them at a wonderful store here in our town called "Repeat Performance."  I had the honor of fixing her hair. I thought she was the belle of the ball.  (Just like every other Mom there thought their daughter was the belle.  And they were!)

My son's costume was provided by You Can Live History.   He was a sword bearer too, for the presentation of the young ladies.  We got his sword from Vision Forum.

The band was exceptional, the lady who taught the dances was fabulous it was amazing how everyone caught on so quickly.  I bet there were over 400 participants.  We were very impressed with the decorations and how nice the event center was.  If you get the opportunity to do this, take it!  Next year hubby and I better be on that dance floor too....the kids can't have ALL the fun!

Blessings!

Nancy

That sounds FABULOUS. I can't imagine having a homeschool event that huge. And your kids' costumes were amazing. Talk about bringing the learning to life. I bet your kids will always remember that ball!

What a great idea--a civil war ball! Where'd you come up with that? Is it just your co-op or for all homeschoolers in your area? I need to get back to reading you more often, as unschooling can be so scary. At what point did you become "okay" with leaving "the box" and what about your husband? Just wondering...

You visited my blog last August or September (I'm ashamed of how long it has been since I've been on) and left me an encouraging comment. Thank you. I also enjoyed seeing the costumes your kids made/had for the Civil War fair. What a fun way to learn history.

How Beautiful (and handsome), and how fun. I know you are so proud of your daughter's talents, too.
My girls all love dressing up in period costumes. Three of them wore their colonial dresses to Williamsburg in Oct. I love the innocence of these young women, and the beauty they reflect. Way to go mom!

I love the way your dd's dress has the outer skirt up in scallops at the bottom (for lack of a better term). She did a VERY nice job of her dress! And your son looks quite military and smart!

Thanks for letting me know you have had experiences with CW Balls and to share your photos! My friends have told me that my family & I are more than welcome to join them in coming years! LOL

I encourage you & your dh to join in next year! Civil War Balls are rather fun -- more than I imagined anyhow! LOL

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 17, 14, 12 and 10 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
