Homeschooling Is Life! - Don't mess with the PROfessionals! (And a contest!!!)

Hair Cutting

• Jan. 14, 2009 - Don't mess with the PROfessionals! (And a contest!!!)

Hey there!

A friend called me up this morning and said "Did you see the news last night?"  I immediately thought something major had happened and I missed it!  Scary!

Anyway, she proceeded to tell me that a local news program had featured a gal who wrote a haircutting book (DVD actually) and at first she thought it was about me.  (That was so sweet of you, Paula!)

She told me that after they did a short interview, then they did a "rebuttal" interview from a few salon professionals, and they were horrified that people were cutting hair AT HOME!  They said it was DANGEROUS!  One gal said jokingly, that she might even put a sign up on her salon door that said "We Fix Home Haircuts!"

LOL!

Well, I actually went to the news website and saw the clip. Here it is if you want to see it!

OK, first of all, although yes, to be a professional in this area you do have to complete many, many hours of schooling.  It was 1500 hours when I went, a long, long time ago.

 Eons ago.

I can hardly remember back that far...but I digress.

There are many familes out there who do home haircuts and haven't had any training at all.  It really isn't  Rocket Surgery, as I like to say.  Most any Mom or Dad is capable of doing home haircuts.  And just to prove it,  you can go to my website, www.nancybaetz.com and find some links and reviews that different gals and guys have sent to me.  You see,  a couple of years back I wrote a little e-Book called "Haircuts For Little Men."   It is a simple tutorial to teach you the basics of cutting hair at home.  You won't become a professional salon hair-stylist with my book.  (BTW, here is an alternative link for you, that describes it a bit more in detail.  Go HERE. )

That is not the point of it.

You will however, learn a valuable, money saving skill to use on your own family.  We all need to find ways to save a little money, right?

You know, when I went to beauty college, I had my hair permed, colored, cut, doodled with and it never looked really great.  I was a guinea pig for all the other students, and vice-versa.  Then when I got out in to the wonderful world of salons, the same thing happened.  I have had my hair fried by perms more than once.  I personally hate to have my hair messed with!  I have to grit my teeth and pray hard when my kids want to brush it and put bows and stuff in it.  A lesson in patience and perseverance it is.  I haven't been to a salon since I worked in one.  That's a long, long time ago.  (Oops, already said that!)

So, I won't be teaching anyone how to do perms, coloring, highlighting or even how to use an electric trimmer/razor thingy to buzz cut your kids hair.  You are on your OWN there.  It can be done, but that is not my line.  I just like to help you learn to cut your kids hair at home.  Simple, easy and fun!  But dangerous?  Well, don't run with the scissors.  And be careful with squirmy little ones.  And, the most important thing to remember is that everyone's hair has a mind of its own.  Mistakes do happen, but are we homeschoolers trying to impress the world with our hairstyles?  Methinks not!  And if you make a little boo-boo?  Heaven's to Betsy!  Hair grows out,  and I suppose you could always go check out that salon that fixes home-made haircuts!

Or Not!

Well, you just keep on learning those new self-sufficiency skills.  DIY is really big these days.  (Do-It-Yourself!)

So just for fun, here is the contest!

If you'd like to win a free copy of "Haircuts For Little Men,"  leave me a comment and tell me all about your home haircutting experiences, or some other happy little haircutting memory you have.  I'd love to hear them!

AND please do this:  I need to be able to contact you!  If you have a blog somewhere other than HSB, just put your blog address in the spot where it says "Anonymous."  You can do that!  And please sign your name.  If you leave me your email address, disguise it so the webbots won't get ya.  :)  Thanks!

Oh, and a hearty THANK YOU to my friend Mel over at "The Prepared Family!" Stop by and tell her hello and check out her blog.  I am so honored to be her link of the month!   (She's quite a blogger and writes a ton, so click both of the links or you won't find me there.  LOL!

Nancy

Here's a little trick my sis in law taught me (the real professional in the family!): she said when she is measuring where to cut on a child's hair, she uses her comb or her own hand between the child's hair and the scissors. (Shears? Clippers? I don't even know the right term!)

Her exact words were "I'd rather cut myself than a client, especially a child!"

She also let me know how sharp the scissors were that she picked out for me when we went shopping - so I was VERY careful because I didn't want to cut myself either! lol

I'll go spread the word about the contest. I had trimmed the girls' hair for many many years, but Haircuts for Little Men was a lifesaver with my son. Has to be shorter and cut better - I can't just have him put on a headband or do a ponytail like I could with the girls if I mess up! HAHAHA

When my daughters were little and I cut their hair, people would always say, "Oh, your mommy cut your hair, didn't she?" I could never get bangs straight! Then I got better, but could not get the fronts even - and kept going shorter! Now after a couple of disasters with my son, I just take him to the salon. Most of the time they don't even know what a regular boys cut is. I need help!

My daughter is 2.5 and I've cut her bangs since she was 9 mo old. I've gotten alot better...but man...it's harder than it looks! I now have a 9 mo old son who was born with a SERIOUS head of hair. (I love it!) He's already had his first professional cut because I just didn't know what to do with it. :)

Would love some help! melissa

When I was a bacheloretter, I remember just having my friends trim my curly hair straight across the back, how much depending on how long I wanted it at the time. It always looked just fine!! With my kids I have literally tried the bowl cut with my sons (using an actual bowl), mainly because that look was so cute on them when they were little, but doing it myself took a long time so I decided to let the hairdresser do it in 10 minutes instead of me in an hour (not to mention the mess). It seems whenever I try to trim my kids' bangs, I can never get them to look straight so we have to have our hairdresser fix it. So much for my efforts!!! I could really use your booklet!

Oh, Buhrudder! (as my little ones like to say!)

My oldest just told me she remembers seeing a place that charged $15 for a haircut, advertising that they fixed the $5 or $10 haircuts! LOL! You just can't win!

Dangerous, huh?! I suppose three little girls 6, 4 and 2 shouldn't be in a barn loft with their sister's scissors playing "beauty parlor"? And the 6 year old "beautician" blamed it on the 2 yr. old? And hate to say it, but she actually got both sides of the 4 yodd's "cut" fairly even! Problem was--it wouldn't fit in ponytails or anything off her face for a long time!

Oh, and the same 6 yodd cut her "bangs" with some embroidery scissors. She then later asked her 4 yo sister if she'd like bangs, too. 4 yodd says yes. This time, our resident beautician used the *kitchen scissors* to do her job! ACK!!!

I already have your book, but thought I'd share about my dangerous life here! Maybe my Anna can "hang her shingle" out by the barn?!

(She decided bangs are not worth the hassle and does a pretty good job of shaving goats now....)

: )

My daughter was getting married. We were all getting dressed prior to going to great grandma's for the ceremony. I sent my son into the bathroom to brush his teeth. When he didn't come out shortly I thought oh no he is playing in the water in his tux! It was worse. He had taken a pair of scissor in and hacked off his bangs right in the middle. A buzz job was the only way to fix it but there was no time. When I asked him what he thought he was doing he replied "I wanted to look nice for sissy's wedding" Well now all the pictures give proof to how much he loves his sister and how he wanted her day to go just right.

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 17, 14, 12 and 10 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
