Homeschooling Is Life! - Homeschooling in the Kitchen

• Jan. 12, 2006 - Homeschooling in the Kitchen

I just read the nicest little list over here about some simple things you can do to make things go ever so smoothly in the kitchen!  If you know me at all, you know that I am NOT known for my cooking skills, although my kids assure me that I make the best macaroni and cheese from a box in the entire world!

(Now that you are very sad for me, don't worry, since we are going organic, or attempting to eat "better" food, good old mac'n cheese days are bygone days.)

I was just checking out recent posts, and found the one I am linking you to---and what I liked about it was this:  It is simple!  Simple things to follow, that create ease, and beauty in the kitchen.  My kind of stuff!  Go check out her list, and be blessed!

My house-sitter once called while we were away and said, "Can I use the pretty dishes that are in the regular cupboard?  Or are they off limits?"  You see, I used to collect floral patterns that I found at garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and have a pretty nice little bunch of them.  But what good are they if they just sit there and collect dust?  Use those pretty plates, use those lovely linen table cloths, grow some flowers for bouquets to grace your table, AND all around the house.

We do a lot of homeschooling in the kitchen.  What does that mean?  Well, my kids cook!  Today, 7 yo. son made breakfast burritos, and 9 yo daughter made snickerdoodles!  All by themselves.  Last night 11 yo son made baking powder biscuits to go with the roast I put in the oven.  You see, since I don't like to cook that much, and my husband usually is too tired to cook dinner after a hard days work, (I know, he's not supposed to cook, I am.  But he is an excellent cook, and does help a lot here.  He is invaluable to me.)  Anyway, as I was saying, I am working my way out of a job here.  My kids will all be able to cook dinner, clean up AND make it pleasing to look at ---it's all part of teaching them about giving to others, and doing it with grace and beauty as part of the ingredients.

So now that I said I like simplicity, and this blog has gone on for too long......go read this lovely lady's post.  And tell her I sent you!

Nancy

p.s., so you don't like to do dishes either?  My dear friend Mary always told me "you don't have to keep your mind on the dishwater."  Now, you tell me what that means to you, and I will post on it later.

Does it mean doing dishes is a mindless exercise which leaves my mind free to think up my next blog post? Laundry is the same way.....

...I wanted to say I loved your idea of collecting different floral dishes...I'm going to start doing that myself.
Back to your quote...I think it means using that time for productive or maybe even dreaming time...just not allowing your mind to dwell on the "drudgery". It reminded me of a book I just quoted a day or so ago on my blog "Papa's Wife". Her favorite time of the week was Saturday evenings when she polished the kids shoes (they had eight children). That was when she would reflect on each child's personality, different little anecdotes from that child, and she would also dream about their futures and pray over them. Isn't that beautiful?

My mom has several "special occassion" dishes... I saw a Little House on the Prairie that Charles had bought dishes for Caroline... when she got them they were only going to use them for special occassion, but she insisted they use them all the time cuz every day was special... ever since then, we use the same dishes every day...

Thanks for sharing!

I hate washing dishes! But I guess it could be a good time for memorizing bible verses.

I tend to stand there thinking. It is never the same thing, but I use that time to clear my mind, go over the day or anything else that might pop into my head.

I have used dishwashing as a tiem to pray or talk to one of my children individually. I have to admit that sometimes I look at it as just a chore to get sdone but I will now pay more attention to that alone time I have so often.

ps - I blogged about dishwashing before I visited your blog. I thought that was interesting in itself. It seems that I am not the only one thinking about washing dishes these days. ; )

About Me

Hi There!

Welcome to my blog.
How nice of you to drop in. What is this all about you say? Well, take a look and see.

Just like the plants springing forth we are following the Son, soaking up the living water and pulling the weeds. We can't wait to see what will bloom THIS growing season!

Oh, and just for fun, I will tell you a little about me, since that is what this space is for. :)

I am a mother of four lovely kids who are perfectly human in every way. They are sinful, selfish, loving, happy, grumpy, excited, capable, frustratable, (I know, that isn't a word but sometimes I make up my own) and sometimes contrite, and just like their parents. But they are ours and we think they are all keepers!

We have homeschooled them all since birth with the trial and error method. I think they all have "made the grade" and they are now 17, 14, 12 and 10 years old.

We're not experts, except in the area of making mistakes and living to tell about them and hopefully learn from them! We hope you will find some encouragement here as you read about the seasons of our life as a homeschooling family.
