Painting the Memories of Home

Crazy Paints!

Posted in Home Educating

As I've mentioned earlier, I tend to shy away from mess-generating projects.  The thought of managing five children in a potentially destructive maneuvers stresses me right out...like painting with acrylics!  But not my husband!  He's braver than brave when it comes to creative projects.  I'm glad he's around to generate adventurous learning.  This was his latest brain-child...decorating the unfinished basement walls with kid-art.  It turned out really neat!  (despite my forebodings of dread and nightmarish messes) I think Charlotte Mason would have approved of this "masterly (in)activity."

Charlotte talks about children "forming relationships" with ideas and understanding.  When they see artwork in books, on walls or in museums, those things will have more meaning since the children are forming a relation with art themselves.  Or one might say, this was just plain fun!

May. 17, 2006 - no carpet - not a bad thing

Hmmmm, good thing the carpet's not in yet, eh? Looks like fun. My kids painted drywall scraps while I was actually painting basement walls. You should see the concrete under the carpet. :o)

I know what you mean about the dread that mess causes to rise up within many moms with lots of littles. I feel the same way and because of it the tempera paint sit in a box with all the varieties of glues, playdoh, and all the rest! I too often deprive myself and my kids of fun memories because I don't want to deal with the mess! Well, I just wanted to congratulate you on your letting go! Way to go! I'm sure that, as with me, once you see the results taking shape, the mess suddenly becomes worth it! That is really cool. I also appreciate your reference to CM and I'm sure that she would have been proud! :)

I think that idea is WONDERFUL. In a couple of years if you don't finish the basement....you'll stroll down there and stop short, because it's as if your childrens childhood is preserved right there on the wall, and it's a reminder of a wonderful day. Wish I had a basement. :)

What a great idea! I might have to borrow that if I ever get a playroom! I'm llike you, the idea of messes immediately wigs me out. I've been trying this entire week to fingerpaint, and I just can't find the right place to do it...

The kids are quite good! Have they had lessons? We've sorely neglected art!

I'm verklempt from me's comment: "painting on lasting canvas together" that's beautiful and how true! It reminds me of Corrie Ten Boom's illustration about the needlepoint that God is creating from our lives...

That look so fun! We have a hanging gallery across one wall in our dining room... and I'm hoping to put in some big dry-erase panels on the lower sections of wall under the windows in the old 3 season porch for the kids to color on out there, and maybe a panel or 2 of chalkboard paint... not as permanent as acrylics, but it'll do!

Great pics, by the way!
