"Sail away, sail away, sail away..."
|
How about homeschooling at sea??
There is growing popularity of these folks who prepare for years to embark on the voyage of a lifetime, taking their children as crew to sail AROUND THE WORLD. This gal in the above link did it for seven years with her family as a homeschooler. Talk about the ultimate hands-on learning experience! My folks at home keep in touch with a homeschooler out there on one of those voyages right now. Their youngest was two when they launched their adventure. They band together with other sailing vessels in some treacherous areas of the pacific so as not to be a target for pirates. How about that?
Would this be a dream come true or a nightmare for you? I would LOVE it. It would definitely push my comfort zone, but I would love it. I think.
And apparently it doesn't ruin your kids, as this young woman, Keriann Bakus attests: “My parents wanted to take us away from pop culture and traditional elementary and middle school,” she says. The article continues:
"The approach—which featured lots of homeschooling, hours reading at sea, and very little interaction with other kids—seems to have worked. In November, Backus was named a Rhodes Scholar..."

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do this. Maybe not for 7 years around the world, but it would be a dream come true. Its been years since I've been sailing, and I miss it. Jess has never been, and one of my goals is to introduce him to this awesome pass-time. If you all plan on doing this, just let us know and we can forget the 39-footer and just go for a good old fashioned sailing vessel with a crows nest and everything. What with all our kids (I'm speaking future of course), we should be able to sail it at least as well as our beloved Hornblower!
On a different note, I wish you were here to take care of me. I must confess, the thought of your nice huge tub in Tipp has come to mind more than once. I've tried "relaxing" in our itty bitty tub, but with a watermelon seared to my abdomen, I don't quite fit "comfortably", and turning to my side is an athletic event not to be rivaled. :)
Miss you.

I must say that this sounds WAY out of my comfort zone. Pirates?! In books, tolerable. In real life?... no thanks!
I would like to travel, but maybe on a big cruise line or even that's a little scary for me, I think I prefer planes. I have no idea why they would be safer or not, but I'd feel more comfortable flying anyway. It's more expensive though. I guess I'd never actually even consider it either way! I always say that in the new heaven and new earth, I'll have all of eternity to explore these wonderful things I never got to see the first time around. :)

I don't know how this would work for us. I am sure it would be fun to get away for that long but I am so spoiled!
Something to discuss with my children and see what they think.
Blessings,
Mari

My husband would love to do this - he even looks for boats for sale in the want ads! My sailing experience is limited to a 2-day jaunt to Catalina Island (coast of So. Calif.) on a private trimaran (3-hulled) boat. I enjoyed it to a point though I think being on a boat daily for an extended period would be difficult for me. But if you get the chance, go for it! It would be a terrific opportunity.
I am tagging you with the infamous 7 Weird Things About Me tag that I keep seeing everywhere. If you'd like to do the tag, let me know and you can tag 5 others, as usual. Always enjoy your blogs!

But since I get VERY sea sick, I don't think it would work too well:) I might succeed in loosing those last baby pounds however:) I do think there are great benifits to getting away everything and bonding as a family. In a way, that's something I like about all the moving around we do as military families. Each new duty station, we start fresh, with no activities and just each other.
Have a great day!
