Home school Mom...Public Servant
|
Why do public school educators and administrators think a home-school mother would be an unfit person to chair the board of education? I think it’s great! In this article, we have a wonderful example of someone in South Carolina who cares so much about her children’s education, that she’s willing to take charge of it herself AND she’s willing to still invest her time and energy in the welfare and interests of public school education as well! What you’ve got here is a super example of someone who REALLY cares about education. Apparently the question is raised, “Is she qualified to be on the board?” Would her time home schooling somehow nullify her ability to be a good chair? My own father, a retired Navy commander, was president of the board of education in our hometown for many years…and there was a year or so in there that he home schooled my own sister. Was he unfit to serve as president because he brought his daughter home to learn? Not remotely. You have an outstanding person who’s willing to serve the public as well as do what’s right for their own children.
Before home schooling my own kids, I taught public and private school children. When my journey in home schooling is all over and my own kids grown, I may be back in the education arena again myself. Why? Because I have a passion for kids getting a good education (my own included.)
What you really have in this circumstance is the fear among her critics that this “right wing-conservative” home school mom will use her position to bring balancing (the left wing liberal agenda) influence to South Carolina schools.
"While she does read the material and come prepared, she represents an extreme, right-wing view," warned former State Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum. "She looks at every decision by the board through a right-wing lens."
horrors!
May she succeed…I say BRAVO!!

Why is it that the very people espousing TOLERANCE....tend to me the MOST intolerant.
I say, if you care about kids and their education....and you're qualitified? GO FOR IT.

what Jesse would say to this. I'll have to show him. I've no doubt I will hear a Rush/Boortz-esque rant on government and "government schools".
Hope all is well in Aloha land.

I don't know about that. I commend this lady for trying to make a difference in her local school system. I believe that government schools are beyond repair due to perverse incentives and a system that is working toward the opposite of quality and excellence. Neal Boortz hit the nail on the head when he said that teachers unions are destroying a generation and are much more dangerous than al Qaeda." He stated, Look, Al Qaeda, they could bring in a nuke into this country and kill 100,000 people with a well-placed nuke somewhere. Ok. We would recover from that. It would be a terrible tragedy, but the teachers unions in this country can destroy a generation. Sean Hannity agreed, noting, They are ruining our school system."
