The True Story of Veterans Day
Monday, November 5th at 6am/5c
The Story of Veterans Day explores the history of this holiday which
is set aside each year to honor men and women who have served in the
U.S. Armed Forces. This documentary provides historical context for
Veterans Day from its initial founding as Armistice Day after World
War I through contemporary parades and commemorations. With archival
footage and photographs of soldiers past and present, The Story of
Veterans Day reveals the experiences of American soldiers from
throughout U.S. history. This twenty-five minute documentary is an
excellent companion to Veterans Day activities and programs. Featuring
first person stories and recollections, interviews with current and
former members of the military are woven throughout this program with
historical background on the holiday. Their compelling stories shed
light on the many ways men and women of diverse backgrounds have given
their time, skills, and dedication to military service throughout U.S.
history
Curriculum Links:
The Story of Veterans Day is useful for history, social studies and
civics courses, as well as lesson plans which incorporate current
events. It is an excellent resource for Veterans Day events, and
would be useful as well for youth group programs and activities. It
is appropriate for middle and high school students. This documentary
fulfills several National Standards guidelines as outlined by the
National Council for History Education including: Values, Beliefs,
Political Ideas and Institutions, Conflict and Cooperation, Human
Interaction with the Environment and Comparative History of Major
