Favorable Development in the California Homeschooling Case

Posted in Announcements

From HSLDA's California page: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/ca/200807110.asp

Thank you for your continued prayers for the California homeschooling case, In re Rachel L. Last night, Mr. L’s attorney in the juvenile court reported to Home School Legal Defense Association that the juvenile court judge terminated jurisdiction over the two youngest L children in a hearing held on July 10, 2008. Mr. L is represented by Gary Kreep, who is the director of the California-based United States Justice Foundation, which has long been a close ally of HSLDA and homeschoolers in California.

Two years ago, the children’s court-appointed lawyers had asked that the two children be ordered to attend a school outside the home. That request became the basis for the court’s February ruling that homeschooling is illegal in California. The appellate court later vacated its own decision and set the case for rehearing. Oral argument on the rehearing was held on June 23, 2008 and a decision could be handed down at any time.

Mr. L’s appellate attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund will be making the appellate court aware of this new development immediately. They will move to dismiss the petition pending in the court of appeal on the ground that the petition is now moot. In other words, the children are no longer under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court. Therefore, any decision by the appellate court based on the two-year-old petition could not be enforced against the L children.

“This is a significant favorable development toward preserving homeschooling freedom in California,” said Mike Farris, Chairman and Founder of HSLDA.

Keep praying!

Veggie Tale Movie Recommendation-The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything

Posted in Announcements

Many children of today view heroes as sports figures, famous rock musicians, and other entertainment figures. It is up to us to teach them that true heroes might be just ordinary folks who, with the help of God, do extraordinary things. People like their Moms and Dads, ministers, public servants, the kind person who takes time for children.

Growing up, we may have longed to be heroes fighting the bad guys and saving the princess, but as we grew older, we learned that being a hero in the real world is much more complicated.  Who are the good guys and who are the bad?  What’s really worth fighting for?

From Big Idea, the creators of VeggieTales, comes The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - A VeggieTales Movie opening in theaters January 11, 2008.  This family-friendly movie teaches kids and adults that God has an adventure for all of us and if we respond to His call, He’ll give us everything we need to be the hero we’ve always longed to be. It stars Larry the Cucumber, Pa Grape and Mr. Lunt as three wannabe pirates who long to be heroes in the eyes of their family and others around them.

We at AFA highly recommend this delightful adventure to parents. Take your children to see the movie and afterwards spend time discussing with them what it means to be a real hero in this world.  Click here for more information about The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything – A Veggie Tales Movie.

Sincerely,

Donald E. Wildmon, Chairman

Parental Warning: Hollywood's Golden Compass cause for concern

The Golden Compass is a film from New Line Cinema based on the first book of a series, His Dark Materials, written by English atheist Philip Pullman. It is set to release December 7 in theaters nationwide. From watching the trailer, it's easy to see that the film has a C. S. Lewis/Narnia feel to it, but don't be deceived.

Pullman's book trilogy is the story of "a battle against the church and a fight to overthrow God," BBC News reported. The Guardian, a British newspaper, goes even further to describe the books as "metaphysical fantasies encompassing parallel worlds, the death of God and the fall of man ...."

"I don't know whether there's a God or not. Nobody does, no matter what they say," Pullman said in an interview posted on his website.

"One of the [book] series' main themes -- the rejection of organized religion and in particular the abuse of power within the Catholic Church -- is to be watered down," according to the Telegraph, a newspaper in the U.K. "But when the film is released in December the Magisterium will be shown as a critique of all dogmatic organizations, thereby avoiding a religious backlash."

Therefore, without yet seeing the film, OneMillionMoms.com and OneMillionDads.com is alerting Christians to the potential dangers of The Golden Compass. Because of Pullman's clearly articulated anti-Christian motives, we are warning all movie-goers to avoid the film.

Conversations Wtih God books-Beware!

Posted in Announcements
just got this email from a trusted friend. Read it for yourself. This states it better than I could:

BEWARE OF THIS BOOK!!!

If you have children or grandchildren, work with children at church, or you have neighborhood children whose parents you know, please take note of the information below and pass it along to others. Schools are distributing this book to children through the Scholastic Book Club.

The name of the book is Conversations with God. James Dobson talked about this book twice this week. It is devastating. Parents, churches and Christian schools need to be aware of it. Please pass this information on to church/e-mail addressees, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, friends.

Please pay special attention not only to what your kids watch on TV, in movie theaters, on the internet, and the music they listen to, but also be alert regarding the books they read.

Two particular books are, Conversations with God and Conversations with God for Teens, written by Neale D. Walsch. They sound harmless enough by their titles alone. The books have been on the New York Times best sellers list for a number of weeks, and they make truth of the statement, "Don't judge a book by its cover or title."

The author purports to answer various questions asked by kids using the "voice of God." However, the "answers" that he gives are not Bible-based and go against the very infallible word of God. For instance (and I paraphrase), when a girl asks the question "Why am I a lesbian?" His answer is that she was 'born that way' because of genetics (just as you were born right-handed, with brown eyes, et! c.) Then he tells her to go out and "celebrate" her differences.

Another girls poses the question "I am living with my boyfriend. My
parents say that I should marry him because I am living in sin. Should I marry him?"

His reply is, "Who are you sinning against? Not me, because you have done nothing wrong."

Another question asks about God's forgiveness of sin. His reply "I do not forgive anyone because there is nothing to forgive. There is no such thing as right or wrong and that is what I have been trying to tell everyone, do not judge people. People have chosen to judge one another and this is wrong, because the rule is "judge not lest ye be judged." Not only are these books the false doctrine of the devil, but in some instances quote (in error) the Word of God.

And the list goes on. These books (and others like it) are being sold to schoolchildren through (The Scholastic Book Club), and we need to be aware of what is being fed to our children.

Our children are under attack. So I pray that you be sober and vigilant about teaching your children the Word of God, and guarding their exposure to worldly mediums, because our adversary, the Devil, roams about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8. We know that lions usually hunt for the slowest, weakest and YOUNGEST of its prey.

Pass this on to every Believer you know. God bless! And, if you are in doubt, check out the books yourself.

--
Blessings, Dawn

HSLDA-Homeschooling Needs You!

Posted in Announcements
Would you like to encourage beginning homeschoolers? Are you looking
for a way to provide valuable and accessible information to friends
who may be thinking about teaching their children at home? Often
parents decide to homeschool or to keep home educating based on the
support they receive from other homeschoolers.

We'd like you to consider serving the homeschooling community by
hosting a "You Can Homeschool" open house.  If reaching out to such
families is something that's been laid on your heart, Home School
Legal Defense Association would like to offer an exciting new resource
to you.

Recently HSLDA produced a 30-minute DVD called You Can Homeschool--A
Closer Look.  The DVD features interviews with homeschooling parents
and their children, covering such topics as how home education works,
how homeschoolers acquire social skills, and how well home education
prepares students for college.

To order a free packet containing the You Can Homeschool DVD, ideas on
how to conduct an open house, as well as some brochures on HSLDA and
homeschooling in general, please complete and submit this request
form: http://www.hslda.org/misc/YCH/?Email=mamagrieshaber@earthlink.net

(If you know of someone else who would like to host an open house,
please do not forward the link above.  Send this link:

Worm/Virus Status on Homeschoolblogger.com

Posted in Announcements
Important Information for Homeschoolblogger Users - Please Read

Tech Support Logo Worm/Virus Status on Homeschoolblogger.com and Other Information You Need to Know

Dear Homeschoolbloggers -

We are writing to let you know about the worm attack on the Homeschoolblogger site and the steps we have taken to keep the site safe.

Someone found a way to bypass the existing security measures to release a 'worm' on the site.  Unless you have a very old Internet Explorer browser version, your computer would not be infected.  This particular worm did several things, some of which caused the triggering of virus alerts for users and sometimes opening unsavory web pages.  It also attached to the template code of those viewing infected pages while logged in, which is how it spread.

The good news is that the problem has been taken care of.  The malicious code has been removed from all affected blog templates and from the system.  The security hole they used to gain access has been plugged.  So the site is completely safe and virus/worm free.  Our web team worked very quickly to get things under control without having to take the entire site offline.

The bad news is that in order to protect the site while we work out some other security measures, we have to disable JavaScript again.  We realize that many of our users rely on JavaScript to run certain items on their blogs, such as visitor counters and blogrolls, etc.  We do not do this lightly - it is vital that we have this turned off to protect our users from further attacks.

So, what does this mean for you?  If you have JavaScript codes in your current template, they WILL continue to work if you leave them as they are now.  However, if you modify your template in any way and re-save it, ALL JavaScript you may have on your template will be wiped from it.  It will look right in the preview, but when you actually save the template, it will go away and no longer work.  So unless you absolutely have to change something on the template, we suggest you not do so, at least until we explain what will happen next as far as allowing some JavaScripts to run.  We anticipate this to be in the next couple of weeks.

This only affects your blog template (the visual design of your page).  You can post entries, edit entries, leave comments and do any of your other usual activities.  This won't be an issue for most of our users, but we wanted to make sure we explained what was going on and gave you fair warning about making any manual changes to your template code.

Thank you for your patience as we've dealt with this.  We continue to work behind the scenes to keep our community as safe as we can, while keeping as much functionality as possible.  To stay updated on system issues, please keep an eye on this blog: www.homeschoolblogger.com/HSBTechHelp.

Facing the Giants DVD-A Personal Note from Donald E. Wildmon: American Family Assoc.

Posted in Announcements
Donald E. Wildmon
Founder and Chairman

February 9, 2007

Please help us get this information into the hands of as many people as possible by forwarding it to your entire email list of family and friends.

Since I'm not a fan of movies, I nearly skipped seeing 'Facing the Giants'. I'm so glad I didn't. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen!

Dear Vikki,

Sincerely,

Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman
American Family Association

P.S. Please forward this e-mail message to your family and friends

I am not a movie fan. I haven't been to five movies in the past 10 years. When "Facing the Giants" came out, I was urged by several of my employees to go see the movie. I went, more to please them than to expect anything on the screen. I am glad I did. Because if I had not, I would have missed one of the best movies I have ever seen!

As I sat through "Facing the Giants," I cried and I laughed. I was entertained, and I was inspired. "Facing the Giants" is what movies can and should be.

Let me say it again. It was one of the best movies I have ever seen! If we could see movies like this all the time, I wouldn’t mind paying the more than $7 to see them.

I wish everyone could see the movie. I want you to see it. No cursing. No sex. No violence. Just a great heartwarming, wholesome movie that made me feel good when I walked out of the theater.

I was so moved by the movie that I wanted to offer it to you. So we approached the distributors of the movie and worked out an arrangement to offer it to you! I hope you will watch it. If you have children eight years old or above, I hope they will watch it. I hope they will invite their friends to watch it.

I could write four more pages praising the movie, but I'm out of space. Don't make the mistake I nearly made by skipping this one. Let me say it again, this is one of the best movies I have seen.

Order a copy, invite friends over to your house, pop some corn and break out the soft drinks. Then sit back and get ready to laugh, cry and be inspired! It's that good -- and better.

Click here to order "Facing the Giants." Your order will be shipped within one week.

Moody Science DVD Classics-Up to 40% off!

Posted in Announcements

“As home school veterans of over 20 years we have seen a lot of products and we were a little nervous. These videos are absolutely wonderful! Well worth the money. The kids love them and share them with others. We enjoy them too and have learned a lot. We wish that there were more! Thanks for selling them.” — The Hollands

Dear Friends:

When my first son was born, there was only one film series that I thoroughly trusted. I knew that these high-quality videos would be free from bad attitudes, false philosophies, chaotic images, or noxious sounds. I also knew that the films would cultivate a taste for beauty, an appreciation for the natural world, a love of science, and a sound theological perspective on the Creator. They were also tons of fun. Thirteen years and a total of eight children later, my opinion is still the same.

For my money, the Moody Science Video Classics are the most God-honoring, entertaining, theologically sound, instructive, and family-friendly films available.

More than fifty years ago, Dr. Irwin Moon of Moody Science had a dream. It was his goal to do what no one had done to date: Produce top-quality family films about the God of creation which could teach character and hold the attention of the entire family. Moon succeeded — and in spades.

“My seven-year-old son loves the science DVDs I purchased. It is so wonderful to impart the truth at such a young age, so they will see the counterfeit when confronted with it.” —A Home-school Parent

Hundreds of thousands of children, like my own, have grown up with the memorable stories documented in these films. It has been half a decade since my son saw his first Moody Science film, but I am always amazed to see with what accuracy he recounts detail after detail. Because these films touch on history, science, and theology, we find them to be very helpful supplements to our family’s home education program.

People jaded by the typical Christian schlock available on videos and DVD these days may find Dr. Moon’s films dated. After all, there are no screaming graphics, raucous music, or frenetic scene transitions. The host usually wears a suit, and the images are uplifting. In other words, they lack the chaos and mind-numbing manipulation techniques of the modern rock-and-roll-addicted, graphics-crazy, film world.

But, boy can they capture the imagination of a child. You see, Irwin Moon understood something that many churches need to learn today: You don’t need to sink to the lowest common denominator of foolishness to teach truth.

Instead, Moon turned to the world of the Venus Fly trap, to secret technologies of ancient man, to the wonder of the electrical eel, to instrument-based aviation, to the world of the trap-door spider, to the innovations of the Clown-Faced Carpenter bird, and thousands of other mysteries of creation to entertain and teach character.

But what makes these films special is that they are multi-generational. By this I mean that they were designed for the two-year-old as well as the sixty-two-year-old. The whole family loves them. Furthermore, unlike most of the silliness for children being produced in Christian circles today, these videos have stood the test of time and will continue to do so.

Best Prices of the Year for DVDs — Offer Good through February 17

We are pleased to announce the availability of all nineteen Moody Science Video Classics on DVD! As a special introductory offer, you can order the complete 19-volume DVD collection for just $136 — that is 40% off the retail value of $228!

Alternatively, the 10-Volume and 9-Volume DVD sets are available at a 30% discount. Individual DVD titles are available for the regular retail price of $12 each. Also, the Moody Science Video Classics are available on VHS for $133 — 30% off.

Remember, these are tremendous supplemental tools for home educators. Also, even if you already own some of these, a set of Moody Science Video Classics makes a great gift!

Please place your order soon — the above special offers are good only through February 17, or while supplies last.

Click here to read the descriptions of the individual titles or to order online.
