A Blessed Heritage

A Blessed Heritage: Educational resources to foster understanding of the
spiritual and racial heritage of children of color
wwww.blessedheritage.com
A Blessed Heritage strives to provide children of color with a Biblical understanding and awareness of who they are and whose they are.  Their vision is to instill in them academic excellence and pride in all that God has created them to be.
Their products include character training and history studies. The studies are done by reading books suggested in the literature guides. I'm interested in buying Nurturing Christian Character Through the Black Experience designed for ages 10 and up for my own study!
As the adoptive mother of four daughters from Ethiopia these products intrigued me and made me cheer out loud that something is out there for them in the way of history. Even though the experiences of those African-Americans that have been here for hundreds of years are not their experiences they can only gain in knowledge by studying what people from their continent have gone through and what they may encounter in their life here in America.

Liberty's Kids

Special Announcement: Liberty's Kids will air on HISTORYTM on weekday
mornings at 7am/6c!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Special Announcement: Liberty's Kids
Episodes air weekday mornings at 7am/6c!
Liberty's Kids is an animated series which offers a fresh and unique
perspective on the era of the American Revolution. Guided through the
colonies by a young British girl named Sarah, her politically engaged
friend James, a former slave named Moses, and a French boy named
Henri, viewers learn about this extraordinary era through the eyes of
these eager correspondents. Episodes in the popular cartoon series
span the years between 1773 and 1789, providing viewers with an
exciting way to travel through the Revolutionary era. Each half-hour
episode of Liberty's Kids focuses on an important chapter in the story
of the unfolding conflict between Britain and the newly-formed United
States, introducing the key events, people, and ideas that drove the
transformations of the Revolutionary years.
A lively duo of budding journalists, Sarah and James develop their own
opinions as they hear the important debates and see critical events
transpire on their journey through the streets of the revolutionary
colonies. Along the way, they learn about how and why issues with the
British crown reached a breaking point, and see how the promises of
American democracy were born. From the Boston Tea Party through the
Continental Congress and beyond, this series provides teachers and
students with an engaging window into the critical turning points of
these years. Through the commentary of Sarah, James and a host of
everyday characters and well-known leaders such as John Adams, Patrick
Henry, and Phillis Wheatley, viewers gain new insights into the chaos
and possibility in the air as the Revolution unfolded and the new
nation took shape.
Curriculum Links:
Liberty's Kids would be useful building content background for social
studies, U.S. history, politics, and civics courses. Though it is
geared toward elementary and middle school viewers, high school
Book It! for Home Schoolers
http://www.bookitprogram.com/enrollment/homeschool.asp
About BOOK IT! Beginners
BOOK IT! Beginners is a read-aloud program that builds reading-readiness skills and establishes an at-home reading routine by providing interactive classroom materials to teachers.  These materials add an exciting, hands-on activity to read-aloud time.
A literacy activity with a strong parent component, BOOK IT! Beginners was established in 1998 and reaches over 1.7 million children.
In the Classroom
Teachers read to the children in their class at least 60 minutes a week during March and April.  They write the name of each book they read – or the amount of time read – on an interactive cutout which children then place on the BOOK IT! Beginners poster.  At the end of each four-week reading period, teachers present each of the children in their class with a Reading Award Certificate.
At Home
Children who are read to at home show more interest in books, have a higher vocabulary, and learn to read more easily.  Teachers are encouraged to provide a supply of the cutouts for parents to use at home when they read aloud to their child to involve the family and establish an at-home reading routine that will continue into elementary school.  Reading aloud cannot be done too early or too often!
At Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut is proud of every BOOK IT! Beginner!  The restaurant manager and team congratulate each child for listening to the teacher read and reward them with a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza and an “I’m a BOOK IT! Beginner” Activity Sticker Sheet on both visits.
Who is eligible for the BOOK IT! Program for homeschools?
Any student in grades K-6 (5 years old by September of current school year) that is homeschooled and does not attend any other educational facility.
What are the program dates for 2008-09?
October 1, 2008, through March 31, 2009.
When will the 2008-09 materials be shipped to enrolled homeschools?
Materials will arrive by early to mid-September.
Spelling City and Other Spelling Sites
http://www.spellingcity.com  is a great online place to practice spelling.  Can you imagine your kids actually having fun while learning to spell?  My kids have been doing this site for 2 weeks now and they are loving it!
Other Online Spelling Sites:
Free Spelling Lists
Spell It Right
Busy Teachers Cafe
__________________________________________________________________
The site has spelling lists already set up for 1st grade through 8th.  You can also register for free and create your own spelling lists.  The program speaks in a clear voice and can teach your child as well as test them on the spelling words you choose.  There are also options to view and print lists.  Of course the real fun is the games! This is a great way for kids to learn to spell independently! (Anything that gives the teacher a break is a good thing in my book!)
Fun science project to get involved in...Tomatosphere
The basics of Tomatosphere is a "blind" test in which you and your
students will not know the treatment of the seeds until completion of
the germination process and submission of results. Students will
learn how to conduct a scientific experiment and compare the
germination rates of the seeds. They may also report on the growth
and development of their plants... and may be inspired to pursue
further education in science and technology.
The partners in Tomatosphere are working to develop new optional
units for teachers and students - new components which are science-
related but also linked to other areas in the curriculum:
Grades 3 – 4 – nutrition focus for astronauts for long trips
Grade 6 – life support for astronauts (other than food)
Grades 7 - 8 – the Mars environment
Grades 9 - 10 – chemistry and biology of food and nutrition
Last year our family participated in Tomatosphere for the first time
and learned a lot about taking care of plants, keeping good
scientific records and being responsible. I must admit we didn't get
any tomatoes and hope to do better this year. I received the email
below that seeds are being sent out and asking me to pass along the
info to anyone who might be interested in participating in the
project.
Free web sites
Linerider.com is a fun site where you can spend some time creating your own line rider tracks! This is LOTS of fun!  You create an online track using a pencil and then let a boy ride his sled on the track you drew. Be careful, it's easy to crash! You can create landscapes, ramps, hills and more.  Use your imagination! There are also lots of videos of other peoples creations to watch. If you have kids who like to design things on the computer they will LOVE this!
The Cooking with Kids website offers many great recipes to enjoy in the kitchen with your kids. They even have Easy Bake Oven recipes! (Nothing brightens a winter day more than an Easy Bake Oven! LOL)
Visit the Animal Cams at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. You can see 20 different animals live on camera!
Find out what foods are associated with your state! Then cook up a few recipes from any state you choose!
Create a Wacky Web Tale. (They will never know they are learning parts of speech!)
Learn some new jump rope rhymes.
Play some online games that help you learn about the Bible. (My favorite is Bible Hangman with the books of the Old and New Testament.)
HSLDA: Register Now for Spring Constitutional Law Online
HSLDA: Register Now for Spring Constitutional Law Online
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
Registration is now open for the spring semester of Constitutional Law
Online, taught by Michael Farris, Chairman of Home School Legal
Defense Association and Chancellor of Patrick Henry College.
The class begins January 7, 2008, and concludes June 2, 2008.  If
you've always wanted to learn more about the history and background of
our legal system, from a biblical perspective, or if you're looking
for a good U.S. government class for your homeschooled students, then
this class is for you!
This 18-week Internet-based course follows Michael Farris' textbook,
"Constitutional Law for Enlightened Citizens," and uses a
computer-based audio CD-ROM to deliver the "classroom" lectures. The
syllabus lists the reading and listening assignments for each week and
offers a flexible schedule for homework. Every two weeks, students can
participate in a live chat-room discussion--hosted by Michael
Farris--to pose their questions and discuss the material. Twice during
the class, students will submit essay exams for grading. A certificate
of participation will be awarded to all students at the end of the
class.
Tuition is $250 for HSLDA members and $275 for non-HSLDA members,
which includes the required textbook and CD-ROM. For more information,
or to register, visit the class website at http://conlaw.hslda.org.
Please take a moment to sign up today!
History Channel: Failure Is Not An Option-Story of Men & Women Behind Space Program
Failure is Not an Option (Two Parts)
Tuesday, November 6th & Wednesday, November 7th at 6am/5c
In 1957, the Soviet Union launched an unassuming satellite into orbit
around the earth. The first ever to orbit the earth, this satellite
lit off an unprecedented space race, and an escalating arms race
between the Soviet Union and the United States. The United States
formed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to
bring America to the forefront of space travel. In 1961, President
John F. Kennedy pledged that the United States would put a man on the
moon before the decade was out. With this goal as a foremost
priority, NASA fulfilled that legacy in July 1969 when Neil Armstrong
stepped onto the surface of the moon uttering the historic phrase "One
small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Failure Is Not An Option tells the story of the men and women behind
the space program—the men and women of mission control. Honest and
gripping first person testimonies from NASA's astronauts and engineers
allow students to step back into the tense and high stakes era these
men and women navigated. Drenched in Cold War tensions, they often
felt as if the world hung in the balance as they attempted to gain the
upper hand in the space race. This documentary gives students an
outstanding and personal perspective on the history of space travel
and the dramatic era of the Cold War.
Curriculum Links:
Failure Is Not An Option would be useful for classes on American
History, Political History and Science and Technology. It is
appropriate for middle school and high school. This documentary
fulfills several National Standards as outlined by the National
Council for History Education including: Interrogating historical
data, analyzing the importance of ideas, appreciating historical
perspectives, Identifying issues and problems in the past and
evaluating alternative courses of action.
History Channel: The True Story of Veterans Day
The True Story of Veterans Day
Monday, November 5th at 6am/5c
The Story of Veterans Day explores the history of this holiday which
is set aside each year to honor men and women who have served in the
U.S. Armed Forces. This documentary provides historical context for
Veterans Day from its initial founding as Armistice Day after World
War I through contemporary parades and commemorations. With archival
footage and photographs of soldiers past and present, The Story of
Veterans Day
reveals the experiences of American soldiers from
throughout U.S. history. This twenty-five minute documentary is an
excellent companion to Veterans Day activities and programs. Featuring
first person stories and recollections, interviews with current and
former members of the military are woven throughout this program with
historical background on the holiday. Their compelling stories shed
light on the many ways men and women of diverse backgrounds have given
their time, skills, and dedication to military service throughout U.S.
history
Curriculum Links:
History Channel-Blood Diamonds
Time Machine: Blood Diamonds
Sunday, November 4th at 5PM/4c
Sierra Leone, once exporting a lucrative 2 million karats of diamonds
per year, disintegrated into tremendous poverty, chaos and political
turmoil in the 1990s. In 1991, a rebel army called the Revolutionary
United Front began a ten-year civil war, committing horrible human
rights atrocities against civilians. Control of the diamond fields was
one of their key objectives; for this reason, the stones have become
known as "blood diamonds," or "conflict diamonds." Blood Diamonds, a
powerful two hour documentary, traces explores the history behind the
illicit trade of diamonds. In May 2000, The Kimberley Process was
initiated - a joint government, international diamond industry and
civil society initiative to stem the flow of conflict diamonds. The
heart of this story is related through the harrowing personal accounts
of Sierra Leoneans, who vividly describe their individual tragedies
and struggles to recover after the war. This documentary offers a
compelling perspective on international politics and history and
introduces students to the international processes used to help stem
the effects of political tumult.
Buy Blood Diamonds on DVD: This moving documentary explores an
unimaginable world where a rock is valued above a human life - the
real story behind the Oscar(R) - nominated film Blood Diamond.
store.aetv.com/html/referer_entry.jhtml?vid=THC_Email_news&dest=/html/product/index.jhtml%3fid%3d77624
Curriculum Links:
Blood Diamonds would be useful for Current Events, Journalism, Global
Studies, and Political Sciences courses. This documentary is
appropriate only for senior high school students. Due to mature
content and violence, we recommend that educators view this program in
its entirety before screening it to students. It fulfills the
following standards as outlined by the National Council for History
Education: Patterns of Social and Political Interaction, Conflict and
Cooperation, and Human Interaction with the Environment.
Discussion Questions:
1. How and when did the diamond trade become significant globally? Why
do you think the diamond trade has been the source of so much violence
and conflict?
2. How has the diamond trade affected Sierra Leone and Angola? Who do
you think has suffered the most due to these conflicts? What solutions
do you think are most feasible for ending the violence?
