Mar. 13, 2007~ Guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7 ~
God calling us to be part of His plan by homeschooling our children.
I have been referring to myself as a Moses of homeschoolers for years. The reason was b/c I as a child had to go to special ed. of special ed. I needed one on one with a teacher to learn how to read. I, to this day am not sure "how" I learned to read. I really don't think I learned by phonics. I, as a adult when teaching my dc to read have learned to spell and read much better. I can now read (sounding out words ) better and spell better b/c of phonics.
(side track here )
I can now break down a word and get it.. or pretty close. I have my trusty word book ... " The Word Book ... 40,000 most common misspelled words " plus I have spell check turned on my computer to alert me when to look up a misspelled word. I highly recommend for your dc to do this. This has improved my spelling ssssoooooooooooooo much. I try to fix the word first but if I can't ...I look it up. I have to say from someone who isn't a strong speller I don't like to hear someone say "look it up in the dictionary". I recommend more to get one of these word books that is a list of common words in alphabetical order. It is much more student friendly.
Now... back to what I was saying about guarding our hearts and mind.
One of our obstacles as a homeschool mom is.... fear. Fear of not getting everything we need taught, not having our house clean enough, not having our children trained enough, and the list goes on. ( I am not saying that these aren't important but it shouldn't take away from what the Lord wants for us in the teachings of our hearts. Well the verse that is so bang on for this is ...
Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transends all understanding, will gurard your hearts and mindsin Christ Jesus.
When I was reading this yesterday the part that leaped off the page at me was that if we are praying our concerns and requests with our thanksgivings. He, meaning our Lord , is in control and He will provide ALL that we need and He usually gives us some of our hearts desires like in Psalms 20. We need to have faith that our Lord will give what we need to do His calling in homeschooling. If we really put our trust in Him and through that ...now this is the part of the verse that popped out at me. "... will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (vs :7) If we pray and put our eyes on Him, soak up His word, and apply it. He will guard our hearts and mind. I think this is so profound. If there is a guard around our hearts and our mind the evil one can't hurt us. Isn't it our thoughts that discourage us in our calling of being a homeschool mom ? I know it is for me. If we aren't letting God guard our thoughts then the evil one takes our focus off of what God wants for us.
This last year I was really feeling dried up and wasn't sure "how" I was going to have what I needed to homeschool. I didn't loose the desire to homeschool for I truly knew there was no better way. But I didn't have the "get up and go" . I kept asking the Lord for what I needed and waited and waited for His leading. Now that is when JacqueDixonSoulRestESwas blogging about Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach and I was slowly seeing my cup being filled up again. I was seeing my reserves starting to be replenished again. Robin Sampson has a amazing way of putting God back into the middle of homeschooling again. Seeking first the kingdom of God in homeschooling.
I just pray that in our daily walk in this "road less traveled" that we will "guard our hearts" from the evil one and put on the armor of God.
May God richly bless you and keep you and may he guard your heart and mind while sitting at His feet daily in prayer.
I couldnt agree with you more! You said it all when you wrote, Seeking first the kingdom of God in homeschooling. That is the key to anything in life! I know for myself if I dont keep my eyes, mind and heart on Christ I would be a basket case and there is no way I could raise my sons and homeschool them successfully. I have tried to do this with a heart that is not really in the right place and failed miserably, that is part of what my challenge is about for me. Its not just about waking early or keeping a home but about getting my heart and mind in the right place so that I can do what God has called me to do and not that I will do it perfectly but I will have peace and be of a sound mind knowing Gods grace is sufficient for me!
Mary that was a beautiful post, you have a wonderful way with words! You too are a great encourager and your posts are a blessing!!!

I often get discouraged too. I know that I can count on God to get me through it, but sometimes I don't count on Him like I should. Thanks for the reminder!
In regards to homeschooling I, too, feel that I am sometimes not getting enough done, not teaching well enough, and so on. I went to college, did pretty well, but nothing really prepares you for homeschooling, especially if you did not have the example in the home you grew up in.
Also, thank you for the homeschooling links. I will definitely use them! I need to be refreshed in my enthusiasm for homeschooling.
I have seen God lead me in regard to my struggles with teaching my oldest dd, as you know. And He is changing me as much as He is teaching her. So yes He is sufficient for all He calls us too, but He never said it would be easy or comfortable and often I want that too.
Thankyou for your comment on my blog.
I have been frustrated with my blogging lately. First because I find it hard to find the time. I usually don't get on the computer til everyone is in bed for the night and by then I'm too tired to face a computer screen. Secondly, I've been wanting to make my blog more meaningful. I want people to feel blessed when they visit. The fun stuff is nice to do, but I want my blogging to have more purpose.
BTW, "For the Children's Sake" was one of the first books I read about homeschooling and it had a big influence on me too.
I loved it when my kids would wake up in the morning and recite their list of armour as they dressed! Since perfect love casts out fear, I think you are on the right road to freedom!
Because of Jesus, Bobbie
Great post!
I've been re-reading Heart of Wisdom, it really is fabulous, I feel like I've barely started implementing it in the past year since I first read it. I'll let you know when I finally get around to posting more about it!
Blessings,
Angel
Thank you so much for your comment. I added you to my friends list. I am just getting started on Homeschool Blogger, trying to figure out html, etc. I'm not real good at it yet. I worked on my schedule yesterday, so I could get it posted. I may copy and paste some of the things from Blogger, just to get started. I wasn't able to put a schedule on Blogger, it was just too big...imagine that!!! =OP
BTW, I love your smilies, I hope you don't mind me copying!
I think I have more trouble with the slowness of Homeschool Blogger than Blogger, but I like the layout of Homeschool Blogger better. It is not so squished.
some friends and I are just beginning a concrete study on raising our boys to be Godly men and I googled along to find your blog. I am definitely linking to you!
Thank you for taking the time to blog about things that are important.

Thanks for visiting my site today! It's so nice to meet you. What a handsome family you have.
I do wish HSB had spell check though - I'm the worst! :)
Yes, I think I will have to post an entry on HOWTA sometime soon. I do LOVE this teaching approach. We have always studied History in chronological order and by the time I really knew about HOW, we were beyond, chronologically, the material HOW has printed. But I do use the HOW teaching approach and have/use many of the books Robin Sampson recommends in the back of her books. Once we are done with our study of American history we will start again using the HOW books though.
I too am a very poor speller. I don't remember learning to read, but I've always been a good reader. Even in Kindergarten I am learning new things and I can't wait to grow with DS because I think it will only make me grow stronger in that area.
I am discipling a 14 yo girl at church. She asked if we could study the fruit of the Spirit. So we've been working our way through them. We are working on peace right now and the memory verse for peace is Phil 4:6-7.
Fear does rob us of our peace. Worry gives no place to God's peace in our heart.
I am taking a break from my blogging Sabbatical to visit my friends. I really enjoyed watching the House that God built take shape. Thanks for sharing.
I am so glad you are being encouraged and strengthened ~
Hi, I'd read this a couple of days ago and found it quite inspiring for me. At times, I think ahead too much and that's when fear strikes that I won't be able to accomplish the goals I'd like to when the time comes, that I'll be overwhelmed. Instead I should (and try to) step back and leave it in God's hands. I often try to cross bridges before I come to them! lol :)
First , I am a daughter of the King almighty and a
a wife to my Handsome of 17 years. A mom of 4 on the go boys 15, 13, 10, and 8. I grew up in the states but married my Canadian sweetheart and moved up north.
