Jun. 8, 2007~ Show and Tell Friday~ My Dad's Carvings ~
This handsome young couple was carved by my Daddy. A little while ago a SSiC asked me about my family and where they were living. I forgot to mention my Daddy. He passed away a few years ago and is very well missed.
He was a man of many talents and I have good memories of him always working with wood. He rebuilt the house I grew up in from when I was 9 mo.old to 21 years old. ( and then I got married and moved to Canada.) He worked on that house till I was in my early thirties and then my parents sold it to move to a smaller home. As he got older his health was getting poorer. He use to make the most beautiful things by turning wood. But when he was put on blood thinners he went to just hand carving. Each of us kids ( there is 4 of us) was given one of Dad's hand carvings as a keepsake. This is the only ones of this style that he did. Because we were building on our homestead this fit in with linking my past to my future.
I am very sad that my Dad never got to see "The House that God Built" but he is apart what instilled my dreams of a house. When I was a kid I would sit and watch him for hours working and building on our house. When we went to New Hampshire for a family reunion when I was 18 .( it was where he was born and grew up. Also I was born during a family reunion a few years ago) We would drive around and look at the old houses in New England. It was a wonderful thing and I just loved seeing the old colonial houses. He trained me in looking at how a house was designed and how to appreciate the style it was built in. I to this day always look around and appreciate the old style houses. Thank you for letting me share a good memory of my Daddy.
If you want to join us today in Show and Tell let me know and I will link you. Each Friday's Show and Tell is independent so don't feel you are committed to it for weeks on end. ( unless you tell me each week for weeks on end. )
The only rules are to keep it wholesome and leave a link to me so others might join. And let me know you put up your Show and Tell.
Please go and visit theses SS'sIC and their Show and Tells.
"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
What a beautiful Show & Tell, it brought tears to my eyes. I can see that artistic talent runs in the family. What great memories of your dad! Thanks for sharing your treasures with us!
Love these Friday Show and Tells.
Everytime I see a post that is related to a day of the week, I realize that I would never remember to do it myself!! I'll let you know if I ever get one together...and remember when to post it!

I think they are exactly what your house needed! Your dad may not have seen The house that God built finished, but every nail you hammered and every board you planed was at his hand. He prepared you for your future home. What a great gift he gave you.
I am so sorry that your father is no longer living. Was he a godly man too? I love the carvings. What a treasure. Where does your mom live now? So many questions.
Have a lovely Friday,
Jenn
I wish I could say where my Dad's my heart was when he passed. He stopped going to church when was 7 yo. Plus I never heard where my Dad was at with his faith. )0= My mom is in Greater Seattle area now. Any more questions ? (0=
Oh, that was so sweet. I miss my dad too--he's been gone for almost 14 years now. He was also very artistic and I have several of his paintings and poems to admire. Thank you for sharing your memories! I also posted a show & tell. (Another family heirloom--imagine that!) Oh, and you certainly may use the "Simple Blessings" idea. I can't take the credit for it though, it was a sweet blogger here who gave me the idea.
Thanks for visiting me--it's always a pleasure to read your kind words. :o)
Mary what a sweet post, it is so special when we have these mementos of our loved ones that have passed on. You father was amazingly talented! Thos carvings are really something special! Thank you for sharing them with us!
Hi, thanks for stopping by :) Those figurines are very nice! your family is full of talents.
Re: shipping. I agree w/ your DH, just use what you have :) but make sure it can withstand the US postal elephants who deliver the mail lol. I'm a great fan of recycling boxes and ask for paper bags instead of plastic at the groc. store so I can wrap books in it.
Today was a frustrating day.... I was 1/2 hr early for my son's ortho appt. We arrived and it was closed and locked, so then thought I had the time wrong but dh refuses to get a cell phone so I can't call home to make sure. arrgh. so I go back later and we missed it because it was 1/2 hr later, we should have just stayed, but how was I to know??? so irritating I hate being human sometimes lol. DH is very critical with me right now :(
My step-dad has been diagnosed with stage 5 esophagus/lymph cancer so we are heading to Lincoln NE around the 18th- 26th to visit him before the chemo treatments get too hard on him. Please pray for his salvation :)
It's wonderful when parents leave a legacy and such sweet memories.
I expected a different answer when your title said Canadians and Americans. Do Canadians not consider themselves Americans? I know we all tend to think of the U.S. as America, but it actually starts way up there in Canada and goes all the way to the tip of S. America. I guess I have been more aware of that after I heard that there are some people in Central America who are sensitive to that. Just curious!

Finally got my show & tell up yesterday but didn't have time to comment and say so. Anyway, it's up at: http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/kympossible/339849/
Before I forget, your Dad's carvings are beautiful.
You know last year at Father's Day you had written a tribute to Dad. When I was looking at cards and couldn't find one, I remembered your entry and a recent radio show on "Letters from Dad" and decided to go home and write a tribute to my Dad. He was very pleased.
As you know, my Dad died in September. I read my blessing letter at his funeral. A copy of it is tucked in his suit pocket and was buried with him. You have blessed me and in blessing me... you blessed my Dad. Thank you ~
First , I am a daughter of the King almighty and a
a wife to my Handsome of 19 years. A mom of 4 on the go boys 17, 15, 11, and 9. I grew up in the states but married my Canadian sweetheart and moved up north.
We live in the southern part of British Columbia , Canada on our homestead. We have homeschooled our four boys from birth and plan to go the distance till all four graduate from our homeschool. I teach with a Charlotte Mason style. I love to craft! I am a beader, knitter, x-stitcher, quilter. We have been on a journey of being apart of building "The House that God Built". I have been recording our journey on my blog. Go to my links on The House That God Built and you will find it. I know God has a lot more instore for us and we just need to follow where our Lord takes us.
