Jul. 10, 2007~ Story Telling Festival in the Kootenay's of Canada ~
A couple of days ago my family and I went to the 9th Annual Kootenay Story Telling Festival. It is a neat festival. It is some local and some out of area story tellers sharing historical stories about our area or people of Canada. ( that is some how linked to our area) I got to learn history in a amazing way. Some of the story tellers dressed up the part and acted a bit. It is amazing how a story can make history come alive. That is one reason I love using whole/living books in our history curriculum.
I got to hear a story about David Thompson who was a man who was born in 1770 in England and was hired by the Hudson Bay Co. for the fur trade at the age 14. For 28 years he traveled through out the west living among the native people, trading with them, forging relationships and in return they helped him on his expeditions to map Western Canada. If you would like to read more about this very interesting man go HERE and HERE. He got to meet men like Lewis in Clark in his travels. He made the most accurate map of western Canada . The sad thing he didn't get credit till many years after his death....like any great artist.
I also got to hear about a man by the name Lt. Col Arnold Kemball. One one of the early settlers in the Kootenay's. They were lured here in the thinking that there was great orchard potential. The promoters just forgot to tell people that the land hadn't been cleared ....yet. If you want to read more about him go HERE.
Then there was a story about the Spanish Lady of 1918. It killed 50 million to 100 million . There were 50,000 deaths were in Canada alone. It effected mostly men between 20-40 yo. The Spanish Lady arrived in the Kootenay's in Cranbrook on October 31 and claimed her first victim. There were 77 deaths and more 500 effected. It got so bad that the mayor had to put curfews on the city. Canceled ALL public gatherings...even church services. If you want to know more go HERE
Those were only a few of the stories at the Story Telling Festival. I hope you liked the links.
I attended a story telling festival here in Indy before and I really enjoyed it. Yours sounds rich with history. It's amazing how people survived through so much adversity back then. Thank you for sharing the links, very nice.
OOH Mary, you have to read Woman of the Paddle Song - a biography on Charlotte Small Thompson. If you decide to read it, let me know, I'll re-read it along with you so we can live it together.
Wish we had something like that here. Storytelling sounds so cool.
I nominated you for something. There's stuff going around, you know.....come check it out.
