Aug. 30, 2007~ Show and Tell Friday~Soap Carving and Crabapple Jelly ~
I would like to share about yesterday. While I was canning my 3ds came up to me asking to carve a piece of wood. When my dad was still alive I remember him telling me to start the boys on soap carving before carving wood.
If you look real hard you can see a boat My 3ds9 carved this.
I knew I had a book that showed the basics and then as we were getting started I thought we should see what we could find via Google. I was very pleasantly surprised with what I found. Go Here and Here and Here . We are very inspired and can't wait till dad brings home more soap !
Then there is one thing I have been up to and that is ...
Crabapple Jelly
A stronger, more distinctive flavour than the commercial crabapple jelly. Everyone who has tried it just loves it!
Ingredients
16 cup ripe crabapples
5 1/2 cup granulated sugar
8 cup water
Wash apples and remove stems. Place in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Simmer about 15 minutes, crushing fruit after about 10 minutes. Strain.
Place 6 - 1/2 pint (1 cup) canning jars into canner. Cover with water. Bring to a boil. Let boil at least 10 minutes to sterilize jars.
Measure juice. Place in large pot and boil for 5 minutes. Add an equal amount of granulated sugar. Boil until juice reaches the jellying point -- 8 degrees F above the boiling point for water at your altitude. This will take about 20 minutes.
Prepare lids. The ones I use need to boil for 5 minutes before use. Check your package for directions.
Ladle jelly into hot canning jars, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Wipe rims to remove any spillage. MAKE SURE THERE IS NO STICKINESS ON RIM. If there is, you will not get a good seal. Put lid and screw band on (fingertip tight), and place in boiling water canner.
Be sure all jars are covered with water. Return to a boil and process for 10 minutes. At altitudes over 1000 feet, process for 20 minutes. Remove jars and let sit overnight.
Check seals. Sealed lids will be curved down. If lid clicks when pressed, it is not sealed. Use these soon. Store the rest in a cool dark place.
NOTE:
The juice freezes well if you don't have enough jars to make it all into jelly right away.
DO NOT overtighten screwbands. You will spoil the seal. The sealing gum on the lid needs to be touching the lid and the jar. If overtightened, the gum will move aside and you will have lid touching jar. I've seen preserves spoiled this way.
PS: Don't miss my contest in the post below.

"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
As soon as I saw the link to the Ivory soap I remembered that we tried that years and years ago! It's harder than it looks. Kudos to your 3ds.
Hmmm...crabapple jelly. Do you have a crabapple tree? Sounds very sour! I'm so sad that my corn and beans and raspberries are ripening without my approval! AUGH! I'm way behind. But I'm waiting for the Elberta peaches before I do those. Thankfully another week or so. This has been a very hard summer, as you can probably guess (praying for me).
Thought I'd play this week too! I think I am going to try your jelly recipe. I always give jalepeno jelly at Christmas and I think I will give one of each this year. Thanks for the inspiration!
The soap carving was great too!

I see that you've been very busy too! Your jelly looks great. I can remember carving a bar of soap in school. I also remember carving an apple into a human head. That was fun! You completely peel the apple and then carve out a face. Then you put it into a dark place for a week or two. It will draw gnats, so I would suggest an outside place. It turns into a wrinkly old person. So neat! You'll have to try it!
Wow! I had forgotten about using soap to carve things. What kind of a knife would they use? I think my DS would love this. Sounds like good clean fun. (OK, I had to work that in.) :-)
Thank you for playing hostess again!
Your SSiC,
Jenn
Your son did a awesome job on his soap carving. He is really talented too. Your jelly looks good enough to eat 'right now'. Or, that's because I hungry too 'off to eat'.
I'll come back and check out the cool link's. Awesome Show & Tell,
I see the boat! That is so neat what a fun project! All this canning everyone is doing makes me want to learn. Although, I guess I would actually need something to can first!
I added mine! I'm sorry that I can't use your graphic to link from. For some reason, I can't save certain images to my computer! Ugh!
I love crabapple jelly. :o)
Apples like Granny Smith Apples , Crab apples have enough pectin that you don't have to add any. The key is to bring it to the jelly stage. [0=

My 2ds has a lot of fruit allergies and apples is one of the few he can have. This is the only jam or jelly he can have other than apple butter. That is why I take what little apples I get and make jam, jelly, pies, and ect. [0=
Ya know, i should let my boys do this. My oldest has earned his whittling chip from Scouts and i know he would really get into this type of thing.
Thanks for the inspiration and the links!
Hi Mary,
I have been really busy, thank you for the nice sweet C-box messages ((((hugs)))
I will visit everyone tomorrow, as i always do, if time allows today I might make some visits.
Did not know about the crabapple jelly, copying the recipe, it sounds like something I would love to try :)
(((((brazilian hugs))))
I'm sorry - I've got my name on your list twice. I tried to delete the first one, the one with the smile that says I can delete it if I want to - so I did. Then I entered my different url address and created a new one. But, the old one is still there. I'm sorry! Can you help me get rid of the first Antoinette?
I love your post - I have so many apples I should try to make some jelly, too.
I am impressed by all the jelly you have made. I remember the summer, I think I may have been 8 or 9, my grandma and I made jelly all summer. My parents have 3 cherry trees and their property, and my grandparents old place had blackberry bushes and wild plum trees.
We would make jelly all day, and get up the next day and make more. We had jelly coming out our ears. I stood at the stove and stirred jelly until my feet and my back hurt. I have never made jelly since.
I am sure that one day I will make it again, but it will have to wait until my kids get a lot older. From what I remember, it is a lot of work.
I am going to have my son do that, he got a knife for Christmas and loves to use it.
Thank you for sharing. When I get a replacement camera I will have to join in on the Show and Tell Fridays.

I just LOVE crabapple jelly!!!! One of my faves, my Grandma used to make it all the time. Yummy! Thanks for the soap carving links, I bookmarked one of them!
It's not quite midnight and I've got my S&T up for this week!
Believe it or not, those are the two EXACT thing I was looking for!
First, the soap carvings. I have 6 bars of ivory soap that I bought in hopes of carving into boats.
Second, the crabapple jelly sounds delicious! We just bought 2 crabapple trees for our new house. It will be a while before we get fruit though... the apples are teenytiny berries right now and we still don't have them in the ground. I hope to very soon, though!
It has been a while since I've stopped by. I've missed you!
