Jan. 31, 2008~ Friday Show and Tell~ Our Guest ~
It's that time again...
We have a special guest till the Fall. ( we are hermit crab sitting till our friends come back from the States ) He his name is...
"Mild" the hermit crab.
We have observed him and have done penmenship about hermit crabs from "Draw Write Now." His home is in a aquarium. There are actually two in the tank but they bury themselves and we haven't seen the other one yet. They can live up to 80 years old.
One book I highly recommend is "Pagoo" by Holling Clancy Holling.
This book goes into such depth that you learn everything you can imagine about hermit crabs in a story !
If you want to join us just...
~Make a Show and Tell Post and make sure it is wholesome. It can be pretty much what ever you want to share. It could be about you ...or your family ....or what is going on in your homeschooling.

Oh, don't forget to comment. EVERYONE loves comments.
That is an interesting looking crab. How fun to learn about it in school too.
I hope curling went well today. Did you have to drive them, or did they take the bus?

Oh, we had a hermit crab once. Not a big one like that. We kept him for a while, but later on we wondered why he never came out of his shell anymore. Eventually the smell clued us into the sad news that the little guy had expired. *sad face*
I was just thinking about getting out the Draw Write Now books for 6yo ds. He really dislikes penmanship, but loves to draw.
I'm glad you posted this. I think I will start tomorrow.
LOL, I LOVE it! So informative plus thanks for the tip on the book. 80 years? Our girls would love to each have one. A couple of years ago it was the big thing up here at kisoks in the shopping malls - they were selling the hermit crabs and you could choose what wild painted shell you wanted (now there's an art project for you - what would your friends say if they came back and the shells were painted- teehe), oh my girls wanted (and still do) one (each) so. But daddy says NO. Do you have to do anything to clean out their home? What do you feed it? Just curious. Wonderful S&T!
"Mild" is so cute!
We did the DWN books when Anna was younger, I think we did the first 4 books, can't remember.
I love living books, you know Beautiful Feet uses these books for their geography curriculum.
((((Brazilian hugs))))

My son had a couple Hermit Crabs a year ago but I guess our climate in our house wasn't good enough cause they both died. They are fun to watch though. I have my S&T up and running now. Have a great day.

Takes me right back to the hermit crab days at our house. Reading over that composition made me realize hermit crabs are a lot like us, looking for seashells!
Hi, Mary! Thanks for hosting again today! How interesting to have little crabby friends living with you. :-) I had no idea that one could keep Hermit Crabs as pets. What fun!

Eighty YEARS!! Your friends better put plans for the hermit crabs in their will! Wow. Great idea to use the teachable moments of pet sitting for a unit study. Nice writing and drawing. Our dd and I have had some fun/interesting pet sitting experiences. Hee, hee. We've never 'sat' for hermit crabs though.
Stay warm, glad to see you sound well.
Hugs from Washington,
Marie
I remember when you were just starting out in the blogging world and didn't know anything about any of it (I still don't) and now...Way to Go!!!
This is a great idea as well. I was going to participate but this week got ahead of me, (sigh), guess I will have to wait till next Friday.
HAve you read other books by Holling? I see he is very recommended in all my book catalogs.
cute crab. WE have tons of hermit crabs here and my kids love to bring them home. Actually my 3 year old dumped 5 little bitty ones in my moms house. Still can't find them :-) Have a great weekend my friend
I finally did that post btw
Hey Mary,
I loved your S&T! How neat to have a little visiter for a while. :-)
I had a hermit crab when I was a little girl and it was one of my favorite pets! I loved how you incorporated the lessons too, great idea!!!! Thanks for sharing Sis!!!
We are all still sick here and we are taking it easy today, so i am doing some much needed visiting. :-) Thank you for your prayers sweet friend!
What a different kind of pet to have. I have heard they actually make great pets and are fun, but I don't know anyone personally who has one to attest to this. Hope you have fun crab-sitting!
I would love for us to have a hermit crab. Or to be able to crab sit for a while. What a great learning experience. I am always fascinated by God's creation and how incredibly clever God is.
We had to read Paddle-to-the-Sea by HCH. What a great author, story and illustrations!!! I think we read Pagoo next year or the year after. We are also to read several of his other books. But so far, I LOVED Paddle. It was about the Great Lakes. Each lake looked like a different shape. DS still doesn't remember the real names of the lakes but he can remeber what their shape is and point them out. We'll work on the names again later.
