Feb. 4, 2008~ Tightwad Tuesday~The Art of Saving In Inactivity ~
This week I want to share the idea of saving in inactivity. What I mean is by using.... every last drop !
Why not turn your bottles of cooking oil, maple syrup, shampoo , hair conditioner, or many other things upside down and get every last drop. It all really does add up over time ! You have heard the phrase " Waste not want not". Well, that is a really good thing to remember as a tightwad. It does make a difference over time.
Also, another REALLY good way to get every last drop is using a spatula. This a WONDERFUL tool for the thightwad. You would be amazed at how much you can scrap from a can or jar when you use this handy dandy tool. You might even get enough to make a sandwich. It is ALL the small things that WILL add up.
If you have a tightwad tip and want to join please post and sign Mr. Linky.
I use to be better at this, but Hubby was really bad at it (of course I use to be a poor single mom on a college student's budget and he was a bachelor with a career before we were married) and I have kinda got out of the habit of it. I should start again!
This looks like a fun thing to do-I'll see if I can think of something frugal to post about. I do the same thing with turning bottles upside down. Holly
Good Post! Yep, we do this all the time too - I think my girls just think this is the normal thing to do and it has become automatic for them too. I think I'm going to join you in TT, I'll go work on a post. Thanks for hosting this too!!!!!!!!
Well count me in then, I'm definitely a tightwad. I open my can of olive oil with a can opener and get the last drops out. With dishwashing liquid or ketchup, or shampoo, I turn one bottle upside down over the other.. and let her drip the last bits in over a day or two.
I even lick out my ice-cream bowl so that there's NONE LEFT
My husband is the king of the last drop!
You should see what he does to a tube of toothpaste long after i have been unable to get a squeeze out. I should take a pic of it next time he gets to the end of one.
This is a great idea. I will be thinking of great, money-saving tips for next Tuesday. Have you ever heard of the "Tightwad Gazette"? I bet we could find all kinds of things in there to share.
I have been trying to teach this to the kids, particularly with the jelly and peanut butter! They tend to just chuck it, or throw in in the sink. I can always get another sandwich worth out of them. We also save the jars and pb plastic tubs for dh's nails and screws.
Thank you too for the hot cocoa mix! I am anxious to try it for my almost 8yo who can't handle the corn syrup in the store bought stuff. He will tolerate coughing and sniffing just to have some though. This could be an answer to our prayers. Most of the other homemade recipes call for creamer, which has corn syrup solids in it.
Along with trying to get the last drop, I also add 30-40% water to all my soaps, shampoo, conditioner, dish soap, shower gels, etc. It sure helps to stretch that dollar!
I have just recently started blogging. One of my "missions" with my blog is to post time-saving, money-saving tips. Please stop by and see some of my tips!
With almost everything. Especially with Peanut butter!! If someone leaves a jar of it like they are going to throw it away I grab a spatula and scrap out every last bit and usually there's enough for one more P.B and J sandwich! :)
I definitely turn *everything* upside down! And, when using my facial moisturizer with a pump, and it won't pump out anymore, I unscrew the top and use the little "straw" to scrape it out. I dab it on my finger, then on my face. This will extend the cleanser for a couple of months!
