Mar. 20, 2008~ Show and Tell Friday~Courting Candle Holder ~
It is that time again....
Today I want to share a little treasure I found at a second chance store. It is a "courting candle" holder. I have been wanting one for years and I found it for .50 cents !!!! It was perfect b/c not only is it a fully working courting candle holder but it was.... RED . I love red and am using that colour to accent my home.
Now if you look up close on the second pic you will see the handle that moves the candle up or down.
In the past depending how much the parents liked the suitor of their daughter they would push up the candle to give the daughter and suitor more time together or... if they didn't like the fellow that much they would lower the candle to the bottom and give very little time together. Even though I only have boys I STILL wanted to have one. lol
PS: IF you intrested in one I found a neat web site that sells them at a good price and they are cute ! Go HERE

This looks like a great invention-- I think I need one of these for when my daughter is older. The candle should probably be kept on the lowest setting regardless--lol.

I have heard about such things, but never saw a modern one! That's great. What a deal, too! But you had to know what you were looking for, so I say, good eye, too!
(((hugs)))

Just before my husband and I were married, my mother-in-law bought us a pair of courting mittens. Each person has one regular mitten, and then there's a third that has two wrist holes, and one bigger mitten, so you can hold hands! Lol, it was so much fun, and funny! I never knew there were more things like that out there! I'll have to be on the lookout, I have two girls! Thanks for sharing that! By the way, I am Canadian as well!
I love those candle-holders, they were such a clever invention, and a charming way to keep track of courting. I live not too far from Lancaster County, PA, so I've seen them in the shops there often and always kind of wanted one. I don't think I've ever seen a lovely RED one like that though! Congrats on your find!!!
No way? Seriously? The parents actually did that to the candle? That would really make a boy feel...well...a little bad, don't you think?---if he had the short candle.
Maybe that's where this saying is comes from: "I see you got the short end of the stick (candle)." LOL
I have a courting candle holder as well, but mine is different than yours. My courting candle holder is one that the Amish would have used. My brother and SIL brought me one from Lancaster, PA (which is Amish Country!) I LOVE it!!!!
Very pretty! I've never seen a red one before. It should look nice in your home. I use to have a wooden w/black one once, but than I sold it on a garage sale (don't know why), and now wish I had it again. (sigh - the sad story of a tosser).
I've never heard of that either. But it is cool when you have been wanting something and eventually, you find it, and at a great price!
It is good to be back. You know, I think I take s&t way to seriously :) (the Reporter in me) - :) I have dial-up, and it's very slow. So when Friday night comes along I always feel a strong responsiblity to go around to each and every person in s&t and leave a comment. Yet, because my pc is so slow, it sometimes can take a lot of time - and my nine year old had been complaining about that. So I took a Sabbatical from S&T. However, Ruthie is at Grandma's tonight, so I can "play"!

Hm. If it's dark enough that they need candle light, I'd trim that thing pretty short, no matter how much I liked him!
What a cute idea, though...he should know they're thinking about him at least!

I was so tired last night when I finally came and signed Mr. Linky; I totally forgot to comment. I used to want a courting candle holder in High School! I had forgotten about them until I saw your post... Thanks for the memories.
I am home !!! I missed you. I love your courting candle, And that it is red. We had one of Heather that we found in Penn. Amish country. But I never saw a red one!
hugs and Gdo bless your weeknd as you focus on the gift of the Resurrection.

I had never heard of a courting candle. I had not so good taste in men when I was young. My courting candle would have been set very low... absolutely no time for courting!
