Apr. 14, 2008~ Tightwad Tuesday~ Savings While Cooking ~
Saving money while cooking
You may know some of these cooking tips but did you know HOW much you were saving ?
Saving money while cooking on the stove top
It is in your cooking habits and not really the technology of appliances that can save you money in the kitchen.
Here is some energy saving tips...
* if you use lids while cooking on your stove you will save 2/3 of the cost of energy
* by using a pressure cooker ( when appropriate ) can save you 50 -75 % energy cost
* When frying or boiling use the smallest pan possible to do the job. Also matching the pot or pan to the element size will save you money.
Saving money with cooking in the oven
The only way to make cooking more efficient in the oven ( which isn't very efficient ) is to ...
*cook as many things possible and fill up your oven
*cook in glass or ceramic and you can lower your baking heat 25* F .
* Use oven thermometers to regulate temp.
Cooking with a crockpot or toaster oven
* cooking in a crock pot for 7 hours uses 1/3 of what it costs in a oven for 1 hour.
* using a toaster oven uses 1/3 to 1/2 of what it costs using a oven
Savings using a Tea Kettle
* If you can use a electric tea kettle is uses 1/3 the energy cost than a stove top kettle
* Also if you only heat up what you are going to use then that saves too.
I hope you enjoyed this and I know you will enjoy reading all these other tightwad tips from these GREAT gals.
I love baking/roasting foods and do usually make enough meals for three or four days at a time.
I drink loads of tea and would love an electric tea kettle some day.
Blessings, Mam Karen
I always wondered how much using a crock pot would save in energy use. I do fill up my oven, but sometimes things don't cook evenly when it is filled, for example the stuff on the bottom shelf might burn, any suggestions?

Hi Mary,
Great tips! I'll have to try to remember to use my covers more often. Happy TT! I don't have one for today (I'm starting to run out of ideas I think), but I will have one for next week (need to take a picture for it on Thursday). Have a good day! Today is a super busy one for me today and will be out most of the day. Blessings!
I do a few of those, love my crock pot! And so much is just common sense but we are lazy and don't do it LOL. Like when my boys make spaghetti I am always reminding them to put on the lid to boil the water. Of course it then takes less time to get it to boil, and by not putting on a lid it is actually wasting gas because of the increased time... good tips!
I hope to have something up sometime today :)
Denise
Thanks for the tips!
I'm glad you like my new look! It's something I've wanted for a while.
I will pray for you and your 'neighbour' situation. I can't believe it's in the Supreme court?!
And yes, June is coming fast! Have you registered for the conference yet?
You would think that it would be common sense to do those things but I had no idea those could save so much and make a difference. I guess it shows that I have no common sense. LOL!
Most of these things I had no idea! Using a lid saves energy? We lost our crock pot a few weeks ago, and having to use our oven for everything until we can afford to replace it in our budget. (We don't use credit ever, and we are doing the Dave Ramsey snowball to pay off old debts...) I bet our electric bill goes up! Lost our microwave at the same time; so we are facing some serious replacement costs here :).
I learned something new today! Now I can justify buying that electric tea kettle!! We boil water in a stove top kettle almost daily to make coffee --- a french press. Woo Hoo....now I dont feel so bad buying one! Even my hubby just said, yes we are getting one!
Our electric bill did go up!!! I told my husband what you said about the crockpot, and using a lid. We are buying our crockpot sooner; and cooking on the grill in the meantime. Hope the grill does not cost more then the oven! Thanks for your post. I said that before didn't I? I just thought I would tell you.
