May. 19, 2008~ Tightwad Tuesday~Being Creative With What You Have ~
Being Creative With What You Have
One of the ways to make a change in your pocketbook is to make a change in your lifestyle and way of thinking. Over the last 17 years I have been looking for ways to do things myself or find ways not to spend money. That way I can put it towards what I really want to.
One really good Tightwad Tip is to look for ways to use what you already have to fit the job you need. Before we built "The House God Built" we tore down the old log cabin that was on the site we built on. At first we thought it would be our first years firewood but there was a problem. The logs had too many nails which made it REAL hard to cut with a chainsaw easily and safely. Soooo then we decided to use it for raised beds till could afford the supplies for nicer ones down the road. Here is what we made with some help from some family and friends.
I want to encourage you to think of the needs you have and start brainstorming in what you could do. If it be temporary solution or a different solution all together. I have a joke about having a plan A, B, C, and even a D plan.
I have also put things up in prayer between the Lord and I. I am amazed at how many times that the Lord will bring things along to fit my need. ( I should not be surprised. But it always tickles me pink when it does ) Sometimes it comes quickly and sometimes it takes awhile for the right thing to come along. But either way it is always the "perfect" timing.
There are only a few BIG ways to save money but there are TONS of small ways to save money that ALL adds up.
Please go visit these lovely ladies and glean some good tightwad tips from them.
Remember: The best way to get a comment is to give a comment.
The raised beds look really nice!!! I've gotten a little better at this skill of finding creative ways to use what you have, but of course I still have a long way to go.
I actually like the log raised garden! You cannot buy that kind of character. This year we wanted to container garden. We have no funds for containers or good soil. Prayers went up. A few weeks later our church planted 25 large shrubs. A side walk was put in in our neighborhood. Thus free pots and free top soil. Always in Gods perfect timing.
This is so true, Mary. I have had to change my way of thinking too. I used to run out and get what I thought I needed. Now I look around and see how to make due or wait on the Lord to provide. Frequently, He will give me the desires of my heart in an unexpected way.

That was a great way to use the wood from the cabin. I wonder if I should start praying for more creativity? I have trouble "thinking outside the box".
I would love to have another "ring ring" :D I really enjoyed our talk that day.
I decided to begin participating in Tightwad Tuesdays... thanks for sponsoring it! I hope to learn a lot of helpful tips; I already can't wait to try your homemade croutons recipe!
Glad that all seems to be moving along well for you and yours. Have a wonderful day!
I'll get my pet post together then for your S & T next week......will be my first time participating. I've wanted to, but havent a clue what I'd share --- you know, thinking who would want to know or see that?!
Have a blessed day! Going to workout and head outdoors with the kids!
I love how you reused the logs. Very creative and frugal. What a great challenge for all of us. Unfortunately most people don't do this unless they are forced to - due to a lack of money. We're trying to change our lifestyle; it's a process. It requires reprogramming the mind. I'm so glad to meet others, through the Internet, that are frugal. I don't feel so weird anymore.

It's my hubby's birthday today so we are off to dinner soon... but I wanted to let you know that I'm posting Weblink Wednesday early tonight for anyone who is interested in participating. I'm featuring a fellow blogging friend as my link choice this week! How fun!
I love the looks of your raised beds. So pretty! It's so true that a lot of times we can use what we have in a new way. Thank you for sharing your idea!
You are so right - it is the little things that make the difference. Those garden beds are fantastic! No need to make any changes to them in the near future!
I did just squeak in at the last minute this week didn't I? I posted my post and went to bed! I didn't even remember to comment until this morning :). I love your example of using the logs for raised beds. I think they look terrific. You inspired me to look around my home and see if I already have what I need for containers I have been coveting.
