Aug. 21, 2008~ Show and Tell Friday~ Look At The Treasure I Found ~
It's that time again...
I have to share a long lost treasure that was buried in the cove of future upstairs bathroom. ( okay if you are wondering what in the world is she talking about please scroll down a couple posts and read my Anti-Procrastination Project ) This was my Father in Laws shell collection. He passed away a few months before Handsome and I got married almost 18 years ago. I have been packing it around all boxed up for 10 years now. I am finally in a situation where I feel I can now unwrap it and figure out a nice way to display it. I haven't totally decided "how" I want to display it yet. But I had a lot of fun unwrapping it and looking at it. I am kind of thinking of a shadow box frame on the wall. We will see. I promise when that comes together it will be part two Show and Tell of Seashell Treasure.
Now....

"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
I think a shadow box would be a lovely way to display your shells. I think it's wonderful that you have a collection like that to pass down through your family.

That is a wonderful collection! What a nice way to remember your FIL. Shadow Box with glass cover to prevent dust, Your handsome is handy with tools and could build an awesome coffee table shadowbox. Do you know the names of all the shells? Aw here is comes as my kids would say....a unit study on shells! Don't you just love the treasures we find when we organize!?
Wow, that is really cool. I'm a sucker for any nature collections - rocks, shells, butterflies, etc. I definitely think a shadow box would be a great idea!
What a great collection! Little Man is sitting next to me and we tried to name the ones we knew: cockle, scallop, sea stars, whelks, sea dollar, sea biscuit... =)
I think the shadow box is a great idea. I have our collection in the kids' "beach" themed bathroom in a clear container to display the ones we find at our beach.
Wow, what a beautiful collection. I LOVE when you get something from loved ones and you can display it in your home, I'm going to show some of the things we have around ours some show n tell that we have gotten that are special to me. I think it speaks volumes about family! What a wonderful gift you have, can't wait to see part 2. I think a shadow box would look great!
Oh, wow! Those shells are beautiful. We had a collection (but not like that) for years. We dried our own starfish (got caught in the crab trap out in the Sound), but boy, we just could never get the smell out of them all, so I think we finally tossed them.
Thanks for posting my S&T!
Have you heard about the Homeschool Memoirs? I think it's going to be fun. You should click the graphic on my sidebar and go check it out. It's every Wednesday. (Like you need one more THING to blog about?) LOL
And you have a zillion more apples than I had. But a food mill? Oh, my. I think that would make it take a long, long time. Do your boys cut up the apples? If not....put 'em to work!
Oh Mary, these are so pretty! The kids have a shell collection at Mama K's house. Shells are so beautiful.
(((hugs))) I will be leaving for Arkansas on Sunday. I won't be around much next week. :-/

I absolutely love these!!! My bedroom is done in a beach theme and I hung my shells and what-nots in a net and hung the net to display them. I'll be anxious to see how you display them. You could use them to decorate your new bathroom. hint hint
That collection reminds me of one I had as a child. I have no idea where mine ever went but that is nice to have a collection with some meaning. A shadow box display would be nice.
On another note -- I have been thinking of you when I see Canada in the Olympics. You are one of the only people I "know" from Canada. :) -- Amy
How special to have that from your father-in-law! You have so many wonderful sentimental treasures like this... You'll enjoy figuring out what to do with them. I've seen something like an end table with a glass top and display area under it, where you could even arrange them on sand or something. I think we're all waiting to see what you do now! We'll know if you procrastinate too long.....the pressure's on!

If anyone can come up with something totally creative and beautiful with seashells, it is certainly you! I will be looking forward to your next s&t.
How did I meet my Amish friends? I met them through the purchase of my first horse at a horsefarm in Ohio. I asked the owner of the farm if she would give me the name and address of the father of our horse, Major, and the rest is history. I set up at time with them I could come and meet them and meet Major's dad.
I love their family. Every time I go there, I wish I didn't have to leave!
And why do they call us English? I don't know. But when I see them next (tomorrow, hopefully) I hope I remember to ask them.
How about getting one of those giant glass bowls/display jars from Pottery Barn or the likes; add some gorgeous white sand, and then lay out the shells in a pretty way? I believe you can even get ones with lids to keep out the dust. Right now, I am sure there are lots of sales on summer stuff like this.
I see displays like this when we visit Florida, and it really fits the theme.
(I haven't read any comments, so if I am repeating what others have said-I am sorry about that.)
Well take care and have a great start to your year!
