Sep. 18, 2008~ Show and Tell Friday~ Kokane Fish Ladder Field Trip ~
It's that time again...
Amongst all the seed saving and homeschooling we got to go on a field trip ! I get excited about this b/c we don't get to go on many field trips being in a small town. But.... once a year we like to go see the Kokanee Samon spawn at the man made fish ladder near us. I hope you enjoy the pics.
"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
I can't believe how RED those salmon are! What kind are they? "Kokone?" I thought I knew most of the different kinds, but I guess not. Never heard of that kind.
Are they so bright because they're spawning or is that RED their normal coloring?

I just *love* field trips like this one! Looks like you all had a wonderful time. We took the boys once when we were back in MI; they loved it, and so did we.
Thanks for sharing your photos with us! I hope you have a peaceful evening, and I'll chat with you in the a.m.
This is really cool. There is a salmon run, as those from Michigan like to call it, in Michigan every year and my brother would always put his name in for the lottery to fish there!! I didn't realize there were so many different kinds of salmon. I just thought there was one!!! See, you CAN learn things as an adult!!!
Love the pictures. My dad always took us to watch the salmon run every year, too - I remember the river was so thick with fish, you could just reach in and pick them up! Ah, memories.
You know I love this! We grew up doing this . Our favorite site was on an Indian Reservation somewhere in Washington...real descriptive I know.
I tried to load a slide show I made ( photobucket) and it did not work. I do not have a clue! I tried all four codes.
Very cool! What a fun field trip. I bet you are worn out with seed collecting and all. It must feel good to have a harvest put by though.
Blessings,
Dawn
Hi SSiC!
Oh, yes! I have my on-line FREE writing workshop for kids of all ages, but honestly, the greatest number of students are in the teen range! All the downloads are free and from my writing workbook (that the Old Schoolhouse Store sells as a print book and an e-book). I expand on the lessons on the blog entries and you can post your lessons, sign Mr. Linky, leave a comment, and I'll come on over and leave feedback. Check out the link here (and click on Lesson 1):
www.homeschoolblogger.com/WritingWorkshop/
Don't faint at the number of students on Mr. Linky. Many start the lessons but fizzle out, many have "graduated" (click on the certificate to see how your boys can earn it for their portfolios), and most go slowly so I'm not inundated with lessons every day. LOL
Right now I have about half a dozen students working their way through, since school started. You can go as slowly as you want, and YES, MOM can do them too, as they are adaptable to almost any age (younger children need help, however).
If you prefer to just download the lessons and do them on your own without my feedback, that works too. I about fainted when I saw the number of downloads for one of the lessons (over 600!) and was very glad not all of them decided to join the on-line course! LOL Yikes! But the stories and lessons I've read from the students have been great!
An added bonus is the ability of the students to click on any of the other students' lessons and "critique" them or see examples of what they've done and comment and encourage. When I started it last fall I never dreamed it would end up so popular, and I've met tons of great HSB kids of all ages! (This explains one reason why I don't get around to visiting much. I'm always commenting on the kids' blogs). :-)
Thanks for asking and it would be fun to have you join us...anytime...as slow or fast as you like. Or try it and if it's not for you...no big deal.
Hugs, my SSiC
p.s. So what about the red salmon question I asked? LOL
I so love the color of the Salmon in the water! What a fun thing to do every year. It would be fun to look over the guys' work year after year and see how much they have grown.
This is a great S and T!
Because of Jesus, Bobbie
Sorry I've not participated the past few weeks. By the time we get to Friday, we seem to be worn out. And, our girls tend to be whiny and want to be 'right on top of me' while I'm on the computer. :)
Thanks for sharing about this fun and educational field trip!
I loved visiting the salmon ladder when we were BC the last time (which was like 16 years ago...) Looks like you got some great pictures too. Love how the boys were taking notes or sketching it!
You have been really busy. I love the new pictures.
I pray that your year is going well. I still plan to one day join one of you memes, but I need to be better at planning out my time....
It looks like that was a lot of fun and interesting.
Pray you have much success on your goal of becoming debt free. God blessed us to be able to do that several years ago. It is wonderful, and I ask God often to continue to protect our finances. If it's possible, to do away with the credit card, I highly recommend it. Or, at least, only pull it out for trips in case of an emergency. We've cancelled all of ours and gotten a debit card.
Do you have can lights in your home? I have started making sure these are turned off as much as possible. Last year I found out that they are much, much more expensive to burn than a regular light bulb.
Hope you're having a great week.
Letitia
That is sooooooo cool! What an amazing thing to go and see and to learn about it. We have studied salmon in the past and the boys are just fascinated by their tenacity and accuracy in returning to their birthplace. What amazing creatures that God has made!
First , I am a daughter of the King almighty and a
a wife to my Handsome of 19 years. A mom of 4 on the go boys 17, 15, 11, and 9. I grew up in the states but married my Canadian sweetheart and moved up north.
We live in the southern part of British Columbia , Canada on our homestead. We have homeschooled our four boys from birth and plan to go the distance till all four graduate from our homeschool. I teach with a Charlotte Mason style. I love to craft! I am a beader, knitter, x-stitcher, quilter. We have been on a journey of being apart of building "The House that God Built". I have been recording our journey on my blog. Go to my links on The House That God Built and you will find it. I know God has a lot more instore for us and we just need to follow where our Lord takes us.
This blog is the home of Show and Tell Friday's and Tightwad Tuesdays. I hope you decide to join in on the fun !
