Jan. 29, 2009~ Show and Tell Friday~ Sucess Story And Recommendation Of Sequential Spelling ~
It's that time again....
I have a sucess story and recommendation this week all in one. I have had challenges with my boys with their reading and spelling over the years. Some have had easier times than others learning these skills. But, I have found something that has made a BIG difference in our little homeschool of ours. What has helped us ? It is the Sequential Spelling Program. One of my sons who we have patiently worked and worked with on reading is now really starting to click with it now. I have seen his spelling increase dramatically and his reading level too ! What a answer to prayer ! (((Happy Dance)))
Gives the child a list of words to study (and they forget them after the test at the end of the week).
Tests the child on individual words.
The tests are corrected by the teacher/parent with the looming red ink pen—after the tests are done.
The rules of the English language are presented in dry, hard-to-understand ways outside of the spelling program.
The overall emphasis is on a grade for one week over one set of words.
The emphasis is on a theme of words (colors).
The sequencing of the words may be due to introduction of words into the curriculum, instead of the relative difficulty.
There may be a guilt reaction when children study but don’t do well on the test on Friday.
Sequential Spelling
The child doesn’t study anything (they remember the patterns used to spell the words—even after the test).
Tests the child on patterns of the English language.
The child corrects his own paper as he is taking the test immediately.
The rules of the English language are embedded in the program, without lengthy explanations.
The emphasis is on learning the patterns of spelling for mastery of the language.
The emphasis is on the meanings of the words (root words, suffixes).
The sequencing of the words is based on research and the building of English words from the root word to expanded forms.
Children build confidence when they can spell words that they’ve never seen before without studying
I was so blessed to go to the BC Homeschool Confrence this last June with my friend Sandpiper. I had the most wonderful time ! I remember praying before we left to the confrence and I prayed for the Lord to please lead me in all my purchases. That is EXACTLY what happened. I had a somethings in mind I wanted to get but God led me in ,my purchases in ways that I didn't expect. One purchase was Sequential Spelling. It is a very right brained way of teaching. Oh, btw....anyone can learn easier in the right brained way ! I wanted to show you the white board after one of our spelling lessons.
As you can see I write the vowel or cluster in red. It helps the kids "see" the word family. I wish I could capture the expression of the light bulbs goings on in my kids faces for you to see. It is so exciting to see and I cannot rave enough about this program to you. It is a VERY ecconomical program. I suggest to get the first book and try it out.
I want to leave you with a BEAUTIFUL sunset that we saw tonight ( Thursday eve )

"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
That looks like a good program. We have used Spelling Power for the past several years and so far it is working. If I have a kid that it doesn't work with I am definitely looking into this program!

Mary, we also used SS for a while. It is wonderful in the early stages. However, as we progressed, I noticed that many of the words on the spelling were words dd would likely NEVER need to know how to spell. They were very UNCOMMON words.
Enjoy the results for now, but don't be surprised if you need to change to something different later.
What a beautiful sunset! Arn't Cods color choices amazing?!
I taught spelling in a very simular way and it was awesome, esp for my ds who struggled with reading. If mine were younger I would get the program! It did not exhist when mine were little.
I started using SS this year as well, and have been very pleased - its great review for Spencer who is not a "natural" speller, and its fun for Landon and Kennady - they ASK to do spelling! Kennady is doing a great job learning, especially since she is just a very "new" reader.
Thanks for your comments and for checking up on me! ;-) BTW, I gradded in 84. I have been really busy and really distracted since the holidays and my blog gets left in the dust. LOL I keep thinking "this is the week" I'll get back to the blog, but so far it hasn't happened. Today I'm getting report cards off and I'm pretty much caught up on some other things that have been keeping me occupied, so I hope to be back to blogging at least a couple times a week starting on monday. I've missed reading all my friends' blogs too, so I'm way behind. I've been spending more time on Facebook too. 8~D
A friend recommended Sequential Spelling to me and it has also been great for my son who struggles with reading/spelling. I have changed calling it a "test" though as it seemed to really bother him if he would get something wrong. I really like how the word families are together. We have a long way to go but I think it has helped him to "see" words more clearly.
Oh, don't you just LOVE it when you find something that just works soooo wonderfully for you and your children? I'm so glad you found your spelling program!! It looks like one of those 'one of a kind' one that's fabulous. Yay!!!
LOVE the photo - thanks for sharing it! I can't wait until that is the normal setting for us, too. *grin*
Well, I think I'm pretty set on the curriculum we will be getting next month, but I will look into this one just to see. Thanks for the tip. And that picture is so pretty. :)

Thank you for this post... you are an answer to prayer. I was just looking in to this program for my right brain child. I'm using something similar, but it wont do next year - so this is FANTASTIC. Thanks.
Day before yesterday, we had fantastic color in the sky here too. I was out driving and I kept looking for a good place to pull over and take a picture, but never found one. I love red skies like that.
There really are such great programs available for home education now. But it is always worth a happy dance when we see the young minds finally 'get it'!
BTW, I emailed you from your sideblog link about seed packages - did it make it through?
I'm right there with you, Mary, on challenging kids (to learn reading and spelling) I've had a couple of that kind!!
I didn't have time to leave a comment the other day, but I had looked at your pie crust leftovers (the cinnamon rolls) and I just keep thinking about that! I can't wait to try your recipe.
What a beautiful sunset, my friend.

Sounds like a great program! Awesome! I saw your picture of the sunset and it reminds me of where we live in Wyoming. We have been having quite a bit of snow as well. Thanks for sharing!
