Jun. 4, 2009~ Show and Tell Friday ~ Making Rhubarb Juice ~
It's that time again....
.
I wanted to share about one of my projects in the garden. We make rhubarb juice for gifts, holidays, and for selling each year. This last week was the first harvest of the rhubarb beds. I am hoping to get at least two more harvests, Lord willing. We clean, chop, freeze, and later make it into juice.
.
But first I had to show you my iris's. I transplanted them from my MIL's flower beds and it took a couple years to get such a full and beautiful bed. I am very tickled pink to finally see it happen. This year I will be adding another two different types. I am hoping to thin out some of the yellow ones in the front of the house and add some other verities too. I am hoping to find a verity that has some red in it. I don't know if they exist but I am hoping.
.
Here is just after I pulled the stocks out of the rhubarb bed. It filled the wheel barrel up to the brim. I have harvested 2 wheel barrels up so far. That equaled 44 liters of chopped rhubarb and I still have a small patch to harvest for our first harvesting of the season. I think this will be a good year.
.
I had to show you how big some of the stocks got. If you feed the plants well, water them well, and they have enough space they can get really big and that is perfect for making juice with.
.
I happily accepted the offer of help in the chopping up the rhubarb.
.
PS: please read the IMPORTANT note next two the smilies who are having fun pillow fighting.
.
.

"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
Your iris are so beautiful! My favorite color!!!!! We had some old ( as in orginally planted around 1900) purple ones when we moved into this house which my neighbor ( whom we can compare to your lovely neighbor) killed with gasoline.I tried saving the bulbs but to no avail. BTW the neighbor out of the blue after 7 years just came over and apoligised for his bad behavior. ( he cut down our tree , our hedge, ect)
The rubarb looks fabulous. I love the stuff. Grew up with it...pies mostly but mom made some sort of jam too and she froze a ton of it each year. I would love to try your juice. Do you add a sweetner to it?
My post is a repeat but most folks ( including you! :) were busy last week and did not get to it anyway. We had computer issues so hubby was busy repairing and fiddling with it. So did not want to ask to download photos.Hope to get them up for WWU.

Oh, I remember when you planted the iris. My neighbor has a deep red, almost purple. I hope you find some near you. You have an awesome garden. Have a great weekend.
Jenn
I love irises. I have some deep purple ones that I look forward to each year.
I am sharing my daughter's birthday and her purple cake for Show and Tell Friday. It's here http://www.feelslikehomeblog.com/2009/06/a-great-birthday
Those irises are beautiful. My grandmother used to grow those, but I have never had any luck with them.
My kids were asking me what rhubarb tastes like recently, we have never had it!
Hugs,
Pam

Yes, the Mr. Linky mess is a mess, isn't it? :-(
Thanks for doing this!
And don't you just LOVE Rhubarb sauce? I made a bunch a couple weeks ago. Yours looks so red and ripe!

Your flowers are just lovely. I just got my my first sunflower and was excited so I can imagine when more blossom. Seeing your rhubarbs gives me more hope for my own little garden. Keep it up!
I am so jealous about your rhubarb!! LOL Our cows got loose & trampled mine a couple years ago and I still haven't gotten another patch restarted. I better get on that.
Beautiful iris! Holly
Hi Mary,
So, how do you juice it? Do you cook and strain, or use a juicer? Is it sour? Lots of questions. We have about as much rhubarb as you do, and I'm eager to get something else to do with it. Thank you so much!
Hugs,
Annie Kate
PS I LOVE your irises. Our are purple, and are blooming, too. That makes all the weeding worthwhile.
