~ Show and Tell Friday ~ Applesause Time ~

    .

Ohhh the busy season of canning is upon us.  I didn't have time to think up anything unique for Show and Tell but I wanted to share what is real in my daily life.  I am a homeschool mom who has four hungry boys and hubby.  I make applesause for a taste of summer in the cold winter days to come and also I use 2/3rds of applesause in my baking to cut down the fat and cut down the unwanted pounds.

    .

I have heard of many who are not familiar with the Transparent  Apple we use for applesause.  So here is a discription of what we just harvested in the last week or so.  We have other kinds of apples too on our homestead and they are still to come.

    .

    Malus domestica
    ( Transparent Apple )

This tree's fruit is attractive, medium to large sized, light greenish-yellow, sour, and tender. Very suitable for cooking. This is an early ripening variety that has a short season. Harvest time is mid-June to July. Does not store well. Careful early training, annual pruning and shaping are required to insure healthy and productive trees. Apple trees are susceptible to a variety of pests and diseases but are very rewarding when properly cared for.

I hope you all have been enjoying a good summer and looking forward to the season of harvest and leaves changing colour.  When the Transparent Apples are ripe and picked I know that it is late into the summer and we gearing up to switching gears and we start to prepare ourselves in bringing in the harvest.   Here is a sample of my work area the last week.( now I know my friends in the South are gearing up for planting which is opposite than us.  Enjoy your tilling and planting !)

"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play! If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents. The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them be." ...Charlotte Mason

Aug. 13, 2009 - Not apple season here, yet!

    Posted by IllinoisLoriH
Mary, I'm inspired now! It's not apple season here in northern IL yet, but I have a fridge full of blueberries picked on our Michigan camping trip that aren't going to last if I don't get something done with them quick! I've got several bags of pie filling in the freezer (we had a bumper crop of raspberries this July), but I believe the peaches are perfect now, so I think I'll freeze more pie filling! (I LOVE peach/blueberry pie.) I think I'll make blueberry/orange muffins, too, and freeze those.

We go to Wisconsin each fall (late Sept./early Oct) for apple picking...THEN I get to canning!

    God Bless,
    Lori
PS: Not sure if it's Friday in BC yet...but it's Friday here in IL!

    Aug. 13, 2009 - Apples

    Posted by basketflat
Awesome. Are those Golden Delicious? I know those come on early. Our other apples aren't ready until the end of September.

I was hoping our fruit would be bigger this year, as the trees are getting older and we were to put in a watering system this year, but we didn't get it done and we were gone during 100+ degree heat so our trees suffered.

I love seeing the pics of you and your family. Nice to see each child and get an idea of who you are sharing about on your blog.

Oh to have apples like that!!!!! We can go pick them south of here...by the bushel. They are costly. And not so nice. I am hoping to glean from the fresh produce enough to put some by. Its a lot of work but oh so good on a cold day! Do you make applesauce cake? Its a favorite here.

I can every year, but cannot gather up the energy to do it this year. I know I'm going to be very, very disappointed this winter when I'm craving some home-canned peaches or when I 'need' some great salsa!

It was strange seeing a post on making applesauce since our apple season isn't until September here. Apples always make me think of fall. I hope to make a big batch this year as I love the homemade applesauce and we also go through it quickly.

I have a great tool for making sauce that is so much easier than the food mill you have (that I used to use). I can't remember what it is called but you only have to cut the apples in halves or quarters.Cook them with the peel and all and put it through the grinder cranking the handle. It spits out the peels and core from one end and out the spout comes the applesauce. So easy! It can be used for tomato sauce and other things as well.

I had not heard of the Transparent apple. I wonder if we have them in WI. Seems like we mainly have Macs and Cortlands.

    Enjoy your weekend! -- Amy
