There are many really neat tightwad'ish blogs out there that show you all the neat places to get coupon savings. Well up here in Canada coupons are not as big and widely available. I have had to be creative with cutting down the cost of food by making things from scratch and in bulk to cut down our food bill. You would be amazed at how much you can save if you make things yourself. It cuts out the middle man. If you sit down and start doing the math then you will be amazed and relise it IS worth doing things yourself. Now, I have to admit there are things that I am happy for someone else to do but for the most part I find it money smart and rewarding to make things myself.

One tightwad tip I shared awhile ago is to replace about 2/3rds of your cooking oil with applesauce. That is a huge savings right there. I sat down and added up what we spend on olive oil and calculated what I would have to spend for the same volume of what I made in applesauce. I figured if I was to calculate 60 quarts of apple sauce equal to replace 60 quarts of olive oil I am saving over $300 dollars alone on that one food item. I am going to be looking this week what I would have spent for jam in the store and compare it to what I spent to make jam at home. I know that shows my time is very valuable. I keep taking the time to sit down to do the math and it re-affirms that being a frugal stay at home mom is a good thing.

Look around your home and do the math and show yourself all the little things you do all adds up !

I said I was going to put up a pic of what I have been harvesting so far but I cannot find my digital camera picture cord. ((arghhh)) So I will have to do that later but for now I will show you last years. [0=

"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
