Saving Money Using Your Dishwasher
.
I started a year ago using this homemade dishwasher detergent from my friend Lori. Instead of paying 7 dollars a month I spend 2 dollars a month. What a savings !!! Here is the recipe...
Automatic Dishwasher Detergent Recipe
1 part borax (for example 1 cup)
1 part baking soda ( 1 cup)
2 parts washing soda (2 cups)
.
Directions for Dishwasher Detergent: spoon 2 Tablespoons of detergent into your dishwasher plus 2 Table spoons of white vinegar and run the dishwasher and run.
.
Two Exra ways to save while using your dishwasher are...
after the first wash and you have a dishwasher that hooks up to the sink is to turn on off the hot water and turn on the cold water. If you have a dishwasher that is set into the counter you stop the washer and rinse the dishes by hand in cold water and drip dry.
the third way to save is to turn off your dishwasher at the dry cycle and open up the door and let let the dishes air dry.
"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
Great tips. Another great tip is to never get started using a dishwasher. It is cheaper to wash your own dishes, and even better when the dks are trained in how to wash them for you. :-)
Stacy,
I agree with you on the most part but the water that the dishwasher saves is huge. A family of 6 uses a lot of water to wash dishes. [0= Also as a homeschool mom I remember hearing how some recommend to get help and maybe hire out having someone come in and clean. I cannot afford that and to me I am paying a small fee for a little help. [0=
Tina,
We use Arm and Hammer for washing soda. I have never seen any other product. We find it in the laundry soap area of our grocery stores and I have also seen it at Wall Mart. I hope that gives some help. Do look for it it is worth it. [0=
Nice to know others handwash or don't let the dishwasher run full cycle.
Thanks for the soap mix-will try it out. :)

I've seen homemade laundry detergent before, but I've never seen homemade dishwasher detergent- this is something I may have to try soon! Thanks for sharing!
I Made my own dishwasher detergent before, similar recipe...got them clean but it "etched" all my glassware. So I stopped using it. But I wasn't adding vinegar to the rinse-aid, so maybe that was the problem. I have, on occasion, "stretched" my storebought detergent when I need to in 2 ways:
1. Never fill the detergent cups as full as the manufacturer of your machine says to...they're in cahoots (sp?) with the soap companies! You only need 1 Tablespoon-ful in each cup. Use vinegar in the rinse-aid dispenser.
2. Use 1/2 store-bought detergent and 1/2 baking soda. I poured the mix into a plastic tub with lid and added a scoop, for easy adding to the machine.
