Sep. 28, 2009~ Tightwad Tuesday ~ Saving While Going to A Amusment Park ~
We just got back from a much needed mini vacation. ( on Monday) We went to Silverwood Amusment Park in Idaho. We had soooooo much fun but I think it was even more fun because we didn't let ourselves go in debt for it. We saved up what we needed to get there and back and plus to cover our stay. Then what we needed to get into the park and what we were willing to pay when we were there.
.
We did different things to cut cost so we could budget to afford this trip. They were....
We did our research on the amusement park website ahead of time and found one of the half price days. We picked the day that with a donation of two can goods per person (for a food bank) and plus half price equaled the admittance.
We saved up for for this trip so we wouldn't put any of it on the credit card. If we didn't have the money we didn't spend it. That made us really think what was really important to us. ( that would be different to each family)
We ate at home for breakfast and packed a lunch that we ate just before we went into the park. ( That night we did eat out for dinner.)
Brought a water bottle per person.
Bring snacks along too the food is what can break you. We picked out a few things that we REALLY like (like cotton candy) and that made it easier to stay in our budget.
Take pictures instead of buying souviners. Those are the best memory makers !
Fortunatly my hubby has a discount with the hotel chain that he works for. We were able to get a emloyee discount for our room and that also it had a continental breakfast the next morning included. ( Hubby searched our for one of the hotels that included the continental it saves A LOT of money. It really adds up when you have 6 in your family ! I do suggest to find ways to get discounts if you can on hotels. Sometimes coupon books have them. If anyone has tips on this please share. [0=

(I will be sharing picks of our trip after Tightwad Tuesday for those who are waiting for my update.)

"There are only a few big ways to save money but there are many small ways ....that all adds up."
"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
It breaks us, too, staying in motels. Or, it used to. Most of the chains have a limit of four people per room, so with a family of six you are stuck with paying for two rooms. But for the past few major trips we have taken, we have stayed in independent mom and pop motels in small towns. Many of the older ones have a "family suite" with beds enough for six. And they are wayyy cheaper than, say, Motel 6 for two rooms.
There is one place I heard of that charges you based on what exactly you want included in your room. If you are happy on the floor in sleeping bags, they'll take out the beds. One bare light bulb in the bathroom, bring your own TP, no phone or TV -- $19.95 a night, lol. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? But it's real. Might be worth asking about next time.
We have to do the same for trips. We always book the hotel many months ahead for the discounts. We look for one with the breakfast, an indoor pool, and that is kid friendly. Its expensive no matter what but we still save. If you use the same chain you can build up points for a free nights stay. We did this when we went to Calif in 2006. All of our stays added up to 3 free nights. Hubby and I used the last one last year.
No TWT this week. Just crazy busy week ( and its only tuesday!) Lots of helping the gals with their work and working at the food pantry. Will be posting S and T on Thursday as we are going to visit our son and daughter in law on Friday! Can't wait to hug my kids!
I thought I was going to have to miss out on TWT today. It took over 15 minutes for your page to load.
UGH! Dial up can be so frustrating.
I'm glad you had a nice trip. It *does* make it even better when you have saved up for it. Doesn't leave you thinking about how you are going to pay for it once you get home!
Bringing food is the best way, for sure. And you are not tempted to eat greasy, fried stuff that way too. The only thing that might be cheaper, if one did not have a hotel discount, is to find a campground nearby. That is what we plan to do.

I am so glad you all had such a wonderful time, and that you paid for it with CASH! I remember the first time we budgeted a holiday with cash only, and what an amazing feeling that was when we got home to know that it was already paid for. So very freeing, isn't it? I feel myself beginning to get the itch for a tighter budget and more stringent savings, so it'll be interesting to see what hubby and I come up with. :)
All right - NOW I'm off to the kitchen... Love you!
