Oct. 22, 2009~ Homestead Happenings And the latest of The House That God Built ~
.
I thought I would Show and Tell about what we as a family been up to. It is as anyone who has hung around my blog know it's been harvest time for us. We are plugging away at drying and freezing apples. Plus we are freezing up apple juice and we are about to start making apple cider vinegar. Handsome and I drink each night what I call our apple cider tonic. It is one tablespoon apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon honey or aquave nectar to one mug of hot water. So by making our own vinegar it saves us LOTS of money. We also grew a small patch of potatoes as you can see. In the pic below is the apples that we have to finish processing asap.
.
Here is also a update on The House That God Built. We are getting REAL close to being done with our siding of our house. My BIL and crew has done the stucco and hardy plank. ( cement board that looks like wood) I just love how it all looks. We still have about half left to go and hope it will be done before it gets too cold.
.
If you look closely at the front door you will see a insulated pipe across it. That is what our temperary line looks like. It is attatched to the front of our house and all the way down to my MIL's house. That is roughly 180 feet. That is where we once again will be getting our water when the other line freezes.
If you look at the side door you will see the buckets of apple cider that is going to be processed in one way or another asap. And I couldn't resist showing our cute kitty cat...Frankie.
.
.
Now, if you want to join us in the fun of Show and Tell Friday just....

" please go visit other gals wonderful Show and Tells ! Oh, don't forget to comment. EVERYONE loves comments."
"If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!
If she would have the courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in
a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents.
The mother would then be able to hold herself in "wise passiveness’ and would not fret her children by continual interference even of hand or eye - she would let them
be." ...Charlotte Mason
Mary, the house is looking so lovely! I love the siding. And yes, your kitty is sweet. Do you start on the permanent water line this spring? All those apples came from your trees? Wow!!!
Have a wonderful weekend. We are heading up to see Jeff's family tomorrow to celebrate Oct. birthdays.
(((hugs)))

I just love seeing your homegrown produce! So much work goes into all of it. We have tried potatoes here but it is so wet and humid that they tend to rot right in the ground. So how do you make vinegar? I do know the process for cider and juice ...is vinegar like making wine? ( my parents made their own wine out of every fruit we grew..)
for vinegar you add mother( that is what they call the vinegar culture) to the apple cider. Or sometimes if you leave the apple juice alone sometimes it turns to vinegar on its own. We will be making sure it happens by adding the mother. [0=
Mary, I love the stucco stuff! It looks wonderful! I pray that it will all be finished before too long, so you can be warm and snug inside it!
Loved the photos of the apples. Handsome has an expression that says, "how many hours did you say I've been peeling these things???" I know what your house smells like inside...fresh apple! It's a good smell, isn't it?
Do you use any sprays on your apple trees? They don't look worm-eaten at all :-)
last but not least, you'd asked me earlier why I don't live in the country when that's where my heart is...it's because I married an architect! He's a city-lovin' boy who doesn't relish dirt under his fingernails...he is happiest when roaming around old European cities and ancient ones, even better. I do not think I'll ever get to live in the country...but it's neat that God gave me a son who led me to many adventures there! Nathan is more like his Dad, so he'll likely stay near "Main Street," although he wants to live somewhere warm. Guess that means, in my old age, that I get to vacation on the farm and where the palm trees grow! Not so bad! Until then, living here IS difficult for me, no doubt about it. But, I am called to be here and to practice contentment; I struggle with it, but am trying! Visiting blogs helps me to get ideas about simplifying my suburban life here, so I am grateful for this online community of homeschooling sisters!
OK, back to our apples! Have a GREAT weekend with your family!
Love in Him,
Lori (aka Plans4You)
It all looks so great. You have truly been blessed. Glad you have so much produce this year, what a blessing.
Yes, my number is still the same. I guess I hesitate to call because you always sound so busy, I don't want to bother you. Maybe this afternoon, or sometime next week. Hopefully by next week you'll be done with all your apples. :)
It was good to get caught up with you. And your house is beautiful.
Love the pictures of the harvest. What a wonderful husband to help with the work! We just found an amazing price on apples here (40-cents a pound), and I put up apple butter and apple sauce. I may have to pick you brain about the vinegar, though!
Betty
I love coming to see what you are up to next! I guess you will be slowing down soon, as the weather cools.
I finally got around to updating my blog. We are busy around here as well, but not so productive as you are!
Oops, forgot to say....I think the house is looking so wonderful! I know how excited you are to have the siding AND WATER!!!! Praise God!
I love harvest time at your house. It looks like so much fun and so much work! You are still getting water from your mom's? I thought the water thing got settled? I love you.

Mary, I had a dream about you last night. I went to Walmart, and saw a van that said, "Canadagirl" on it. I thought, "Mary is in MY Walmart! I have to find her!" I prayed for the Lord to direct my steps, and in a matter of seconds, we found you! LOL! And of course, in the dream we had a long, enjoyable talk!
Hey, I saw that you were online and just stopped by to say hello. Red potatoes are one of my favorites; we mash them and add broccoli, cheese, butter, sour cream, green onions, the works--they're a favorite for our vegetarian son, and a great way to sneak in some veggies that he wouldn't eat alone (like broccoli).
