Creation Unit Study

Posted in Creation Study

For the months of June, July and August we are going to be learning ALL about creation! Several people have asked recently what all we are doing...so I thought i would put it all in one place and then those that are interested can check my blog for links, books and such!

First of all, I purchased 106 Days of Creation Studies from simplycharlottemason.com. Here is the link to the study:

http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/creationstudies/

For $9.95 I got a TON of lesson ideas for this unit! I'm not going to be doing all 106 days, but picked and chose the lessons I thought would be most applicable to my children and their young ages. I would highly recommend this study to anyone who wants to learn more in detail about creation! This study from simplycharlottemason.com is excellent and has wonderful ideas to use for each day of creation! Because it is a Charlotte Mason based unit, there is journaling involved. Each child keeps a creation notebook and draws pictures throughout the study of different things that God created. At the end of the study there will literally be a notebook FULL of wonderful drawings that your child can save and use as a review. I'm excited about this aspect of our study! (I'm going to try and not type out the 106 lessons in TOO much detail, because I did purchase this unit, if you would like all the ideas you should go purchase the study for your family! Again, I think it's worth it!)

Here is a basic run down of what I'm going to be doing each week! There is also an overview in the study where you read all of Gen. 1 before beginning each specific day with your child. Also, it goes without saying that we are reading LOTS of good books from the library on EACH topic each week.

Also, one more note, some of the weeks I am splitting up - like Day 3 - we're doing a whole week on land and then a whole OTHER week on ocean!

Week 1 - Light & Darkness

*Read Gen. 1:3-5.

*Talk about different kinds of light.

*Talk about shadows - looking outside for them as well!

*Talk about colors, rainbow.

*Cut out pictures from magazines of things that take place in the DAY time and things at NIGHT. Then glue onto a sheet divided into 2 columns, for DAY/NIGHT.

Week 2 - Water/Sky

*Read Gen. 1:6-8

*Learn about different kinds of clouds. (FIAR selections - Storm in the Night, Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car)

*Sink/Float experiments.

*Water cycle lessons.

*Weather - talk about the different kinds of weather, possibly do a weather chart for the weeks you are doing this study!

*Magic School Bus Wet All Over (about the water cycle)

Week 3 - Land & Plants

*Read 1:9-13.

*Discuss rocks - possibly start a rock collection!

*Soil - seeds - dirt! (FIAR selections - Peter Rabbit, Miss Rumphius)

*Plant seeds and chart their growth.

*Flowers, plants, etc. Go on a walk to look for JUST different types of flowers.

*Read Blueberries for Sal (BFIAR) and Jamberry (HSS) and possibly find a berry farm to visit!

*Trees

*Magic School Bus Gets Planted

Week 4 - Ocean

*I am doing a unit study I got as a freebie from Christian Cottage online a year or so ago on the ocean. I just looked and it is still FREE!! Yipee! So I can share that one with you as well! Scroll down a bit and you will see the Oceanography unit and you can click on it to download for free. There are some wonderful ideas in this one as well - for different age levels too, as well as book recommendations.

http://www.christiancottage.com/units.html

*FIAR selections - Gramma's Walk, Night of the Moonjellies

*Learn the names of the oceans. Look at maps, globe to see how much our earth is covered with water!

*Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor

 Week 5 - Moon & Sun & Stars & Planets

*Read Gen. 1:14-19

*Make sure to get out at night one evening and gaze at God's creation at NIGHT. Maybe you can try and draw some stars as well!

*I'm getting the Ultimate Sticker Book of the solar system to do.

*Inside the earth:

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/activities/coloring/Earth.shtml

*A page about the moon:

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/moon/index.shtml

*This site has EXCELLENT worksheets and ideas to use for different things. It is free to sign up, once you have joined, click on "themes" and then "space." You can print math sheets at your child's level, language and science lessons as well!

www.learningpage.com

*There is also a mural for the wall, where you can print off the planets which have been made according to size, etc. We are going to do this as well!

 http://www.learningpage.com/pages/memberpdfs/teachers_notes/space/sp_tn00.pdf

(not sure if that link will open, cause you have to join. If you join, once you get to the "space" pages, click on "mural" on the top of the page.)

*Lots of Magic School Bus books and videos for this week!

Magic School Bus Gets Lost in Space

Magic School Bus Explores the Solar System

Magic School Bus Out of This World

Magic School Bus Takes a Moonwalk

Magic School Bus Sees Stars

 Week 6 - Insects

*What animals do you see in your own backyard?

*Field trips - Zoo, Pet store

*Read lots of books about different types of animals! (What Makes a Mammal a Mammal? What Makes a Bird a Bird?)

Week 9 - Man

*Read Gen. 1:27-2:7. How did God create man?

*Look back at baby pictures of your own children. Discuss all the statistics - weight, length. See how much they have grown.

*Discuss the 5 senses.

*This is a good time to learn all about the human body if you have not done so!

*Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body

Magic School Bus Explores the Senses

FINALLY - Review

*As we go along each week I'd like to do a big mural on the wall, adding to it each week as we learn new things God created.

*Here is a creation mini-book that we may do as coloring pages as well.

http://www.dltk-bible.com/genesis/creation/book.htm

*Make sure you keep that creation journal/notebook going through the entire study. This will be a neat keepsake of your time studying creation together! A good way to go back and review as well.

I have tempted by this study, too. Glad to see it's good:) Might give in to the temptation:)

Candace,
This looks wonderful! I am going to do this in the future with Justin. Justin has a great love of the solar system, since the age of three. I really want to give him a firm foundation on how God created the world.
He watches alot of science related shows and so much is very secular. This will give him a wonderful foundation. Thanks!
Michele
