I posted this over on the FIAR board...but thought I'd post here, too, for anyone not reading there.
Part of it started when my SIL had a birds nest in her bushes at eye-level and we got to watch the baby birds for days...it was awesome! So, I have bought a field guide of American Birds and have been flipping through it. We already have 2 different kinds of bird feeders by our back window and a wonderful place to watch them from inside.
I guess I'm looking for any tips or suggestions! My hope is to teach the kids a few of the birds we see at our window, have them learn about those birds specifically, being able to recognize them, draw them, etc. Maybe some sort of chart to figure out which ones come by the most, which ones we see the least, etc???
What do you think?
Also, what about a bird you are having a hard time identifying. We have some simple, small, brownish birds -- do I just need to keep looking at them more and more? From what I have looked at so far (pictures) it could be a wren, a sparrow, a house finch...???
Well, here is what I have identified so far! I'm SO excited too, when I can figure out what one of our "regulars" is!
*northern cardinals - mostly females
*American robins
*dark-eyed Junco - white winged version
*mourning dove
