Here are some of the wonderful Thanksgiving books and units we will be reading and working on in November!
This first title is Goody O'Grumpity, which is a cute, short, rhyming book about pilgrims. There is spice cake involved, too, so this will be a fun week with cooking involved! There is a wonderful unit to go along with this book on the homeschool share site. Click HERE for the unit! There are a lot of printables and lapbooking components to go with this book, which always makes it a great week for us, with our crafty-hands-on girls! I love the units that have all those fun things to go along with them! And Ami does such a fabulous job of creating all of those - and lets us use them for FREE! What a BLESSING!
This next title, Cranberry Thanksgiving, is a beloved Five in a Row title. We rowed this book last year, and possibly the year before, I can't remember! But, as long as I have rowers in my home, this book will probably be a November tradition! The week we row this book we enjoy doing lots of cranberry things! Reading books about cranberry bogs, tasting cranberry juice, making cranberry centerpieces and crafts as well as a cranberry recipe or two.
I cannot even remember where I heard the raving about this book, Eating the Plates, but after I got it from the library I saw why they were raving! This will be our read aloud for the month of November. It says on the back that it is geared for ages 7-11, but it really is cute, and I think it will hold my girls attention! It describes the real life of pilgrims as they rode the Mayflower over, it describes what they ate (bugs, oh my!) and talks about the manners they used. It is a fun read aloud! So, with this book we will be entertained, but will also learn a lot about pilgrims life! There are also a few real pilgrim recipes in the back, not sure if we will be brave enough to try any of them, some of them are a bit interesting! Fresh corn soup, red pickled eggs, hot indian pudding, succotash stew, bannock cakes, bearberry jelly and more! The chapters are very short, so I think this book will really work well for us this year! I hope so!
And, finally is a book called This First Thanksgiving - a Counting Story. This book does not have a unit with it, however, I love it when I find new books for go-alongs with our units that are simple, rhyming books that we will enjoy! This one rhymes and counts up to 12 describing different things about Thanksgiving. And I really love the illustrations on this one too!
