Saint Nicholas

Posted in Advent, Christmas

Today we started learning about the man named Saint Nicholas.  We learned about who the man named Nicholas was and what he did that made him special. We read the book, Santa are you for real? This is a cute book! It explains who Nicholas was and told us that he was a man who loved God and also loved giving gifts in secret. We learned that he loved giving to the poor, and that is what be became known for.

Santa, Are You For Real?

I tried explaining the concept of giving in secret to the kids (including Jacob who was here today) and none of them could grasp why he wouldn't want someone to say thank-you to him. Well, I guess Aunt Lissa and I have engrained "say thank you" SO MANY TIMES that NOT saying thank you would just seem blasphemous. The kids just didn't get doing kind deeds in secret...it was kinda funny!

After we read the book they all colored a picture of Saint Nicholas from the St. Nicholas center, and then we made this cute craft from there as well. Kids and cotton! Who knew it could be so much fun?

I just found out yesterday that today is St. Nicholas' Day...one of the saint's days celebrated by the catholic church. I read my friend in the Netherland's blog and her latest entry mentions that 'Sinterklaas' comes on December 5th...lightbulb moment! I love how blogs like ours can help us understand other cultures and celebrations...

I came home today and realized all I had to do today for school was Math, because you enough to count for the rest! Woohoo!!!
Tomorrow we're going to make a game of doing things for someone else without telling them or making them notice...we'll see if that helps it sink in. : )

Everytime I look at your blog, I am amazed at what you do with your kiddos. I could just kick myself for not putting in nominations for the HSBlog Awards.

You deserve the super-homeschooling mom award!!

You are fantastic! :)

Thanks for inspiring us all.

Oh I love it! I tried to get ahold of that book thru our library, but they don't have it. So we used a different one. We did a craft as well, we made St. Nicholas ornaments that came out so cute! You have such graet ideas! I agree you deserve a homeschool blog award! :)
