A Butterfly Unit...

Posted in Book Units (other than FIAR)

I'm excited to learn more about butterflies with the kids next week!

I'm also very excited about the fabulous (did I mention free) lapbook on butterflies at HSS!

Here are some other books and ideas I am excited about for next week!

Books

 The Butterfly Alphabet

Butterfly House

Hurry and the Monarch

Isabel's House of Butterflies (Sierra Club Books (Sierra))

Crinkleroot's Guide to Knowing Butterflies and Moths (Crinkleroot)

Activities, Crafts and Lessons

*Be sure you check out this lapbook on butterflies, really and truly, I think this is one of the best freebies out there! Butterfly Lapbook from HSS!

*we are going to draw the butterfly life cycle in our nature journals

*HERE is a great page with pictures and facts about the butterfly.

*Coloring page of a monarch butterfly.

*Did you sing the Butterfly Song when you were a child? I DID!! I love that song! And I found a website where you can listen and sing along! Oh the memories! Click on this website, and then scroll down a bit to listen to the Butterfly Song.

*Make caterpillars and butterflies with playdough. Maybe we could even show the life cycle with playdough?

*A few years ago we "acted out" the lifecycle of the butterfly. I think we will do this again! First you curl up in a ball to be the egg. Second, you slither on the ground like a caterpillar. Then, you curl up in a ball like a cocoon - you can even cover up with a blanket. Then, you emerge from the blanket and fly around like a butterfly!

*This site has some fabulous printables! Probably for the little bit older crowd, you can label the parts of the caterpillar and butterfly, note the differences between a butterfly and moth.  There are also 2 really neat stories comparing our spiritual walk and salvation to the life of a butterfly. Check them out HERE and HERE.

*HERE are lots of pretty butterfly coloring pages to choose from!

a cute cake! We might try this and use fake fun flower for the vase instead of the candy ones!

We were actually able to "grow" our own butterfly last year. Grandma found a monarch caterpillar and we put it in a jar and it was a beautiful thing to watch. The kids were quite sad when it flew away, but thankfully it stuck around for awhile once outside so they could watch it.
