Back Home
We are back home from South Carolina.
It was our first family trip.
We had such a wonderful time.
I even got to see the ocean.
Most of my kids had already seen the ocean because daddy likes to take a couple of them and head out to different places.
They finally talked mommy into going along.
What a great time!
I hadn't seen my sister in over a year and a half, so that was the best part for me.
God is so good to us!

Summer Vacation?
Today was our last day of school.
We are officially on summer vacation.
I laugh when I use the word 'vacation' though.
The kids anxiously await their 'vacation', then they spend their time doing school work!
They love school. They are able to pursue their work without any pressures of having to get it done. I love it!

Count Down
The kids are counting down until "summer vacation".
I always laugh at them because they truly love school.
Many "first day of summer" days, my kids could be found somewhere reading a good book.
We tend to do school through-out the year. We just change up what we are learning and how it is being taught.
We are finishing up our ocean study by actually going to the ocean!
Technically, we are going on 'vacation' on May 28th. Then, on June 1st we are headed to South Carolina!! Yea!!!!!!!!!!
How are you spending your 'summer vacation'?

Homeschool
We only have four and a half weeks of our regular school year left! Wow!
The funny thing is that we never actually stop learning, we just switch up the way we learn. We also focus more on science and nature studies. We get to spend a lot more time on learning crafts too. The kids are getting pretty good at crocheting! Read alouds never stop! We actually do so much learning during the summer that we shouldn't even call it summer vacation. Oh, well, it makes the kids feel better thinking they are on vacation. lol
We are preparing to go to the ocean in June.
What a great way to complete our ocean unit study!
I have never been to the ocean before. Many of the kids have been to the ocean, but this will be my first trip. Yahoo!
What are your summer time plans?

Yeah
Saturday, March 21st was our 22nd wedding anniversary!!
I had a lovely day.
It was great.
My husband and I went out to lunch and did a little shopping.
Later, we ordered pizza and had all of our kids over.
Some extended family came over too.
We ate pizza, cake, and watched our wedding video.
What fun!
Everyone enjoyed laughing at my huge glasses!
I tried to tell them that it was the style in the 80's, but they just laughed all the more!

c = see
d = Dee
g = gee
i = eye, I
j = Jay
k = Kay
o = oh
p = pea, pee
r = are
t = tea, tee

We have been having fun collecting things in preparation for our ocean books.
I picked up some ocean stickers at the dollar store, but they didn't have very many.
I picked up a book on sea creatures at the junk store. We are going to use it to cut pictures and paste them inot our books.
Preparing seems to be half the fun.

Favorite School Books
Let's share different books that we truly love in our homeschool.
Each Monday in March come back here to read which book I love, then share which one you love.
Sound like fun?
I'll start.
We just got, "Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?" in the mail.
It is an economics course, but don't let that scare you.
This book is wonderful!
It truly captivated us.
It is really a 'living' book. I love it!
The chapters are short, but you get a lot out of them.
When I told my 16 year old that we got his new economics book in the mail, he wasn't excited.
That is until we started it. He was really impressed with it too.
Have any of you tried this book?
Are any of you thinking about it?
Go for it! It is a great resource.

Timing
Timing is everything!
Each one of my kids has a certain time of day when they learn the easiest.
Life is much easier when I tune into these times.
When Olivia was little, she couldn't seem to understand anything during the day.
The funny thing is, when nighttime rolled around, she turned into a different child.
She could do all of her work without tears. Yeah!!
Learn which time works best for your children.
Believe me, the tears it saves makes it worth it alone!

Charity Christian Missions
Have you ever heard of Charity Tapes Minisitry?
They have a website where they take donations for all
of their tapes. If you can't afford anything, you simple
click a button and can receive them for free.
They also have a quarterly magazine entitled,
Charity Christian Missions. You are able to copy anything
you would like out of their magazine. This makes an awesome
homeschool resource. Their newest volume has an article called,
Blood on Our Hands. It is a little history lesson on the American Indians and missionaries. It includes awesome pictures of early American Indians. It also has a United States map showing where the different tribes lived. There is a worksheet included where you can match up a picture of a 'house' to the tribe that used that type. To end with, there is a little biography on the missionary, David Brainerd (a young Puritan minister to the American Indians).
I printed out a copy of this story for each one of my children. They are going to turn it into their own little books.
After this sparks their interests, I'm going to encourage them to dive deeper through the use of our local library and the internet.
Have fun!

Make a List Book
The younger kids are turning all of those lists into books this week.
We made books out of construction paper, wrote "Sophia's List Book"
(or whichever child's name) then used each page for a different list.
For example:
page #1 - school supplies list
page #2 - grocery list
page #3 - things I want to do this year list
The possibilities are endless.
Why not make a list book with your kids today?
They are fun and educational.
Lists are a great way to teach spelling!

Mission Trips
|
Our two older went on short term mission trips when they were teenagers.
Both Jud and Jaimie spent two weeks in the Bahamas during the summer of 2003. (Rough, huh?)
They were able to participate in a church building projects and vacation Bible school.
They had a great time, plus it was an awesome learning experience.
Jud went to Mexico in the spring of 2004.
He saw a lot of poverty which flared his desire for missions even more. (Both Jud and Jaimie have always desired to go to the nations.)
Jud is now in Alaska at the leading of the Lord.
Not only that, but he is making preparations to go to Africa! (This is his heart’s desire!)
Do your children go on missions trips?
Do you want them to?
Where have they been?
Where do they desire to go?

Proverbs
|
We are studying the Proverbs with our Bible study group on Wednesday nights. Tomorrow will only be our 2nd meeting. We are excited about them though.
We have decided to hold these meetings in the same manner that we hold our family Bible studies.
We gather into a room together, and start off with prayer. Then, we read out of the Bible. (Right now we are reading in the Proverbs.) Anybody who wants to can read. (During family time, everyone reads even if they don’t want to. ;D )
Questions and discussions can come up at any moment. We don’t have a set amount that we are reading. It depends on how many questions, and how long the discussions last.
Any questions that aren’t answered are searched out so that an answer can be given next time.
Tell me about your Bible studies.

We started an in house Bible study in our home on Wednesdays.
This is not a mommy and daddy thing. It is a family thing.

It is awesome to see our children discuss and explain the Word of God.
What a learning experience.

We Love Church
|
Our children love to go to church. It’s not because they meet up with their friends, either. We go to a very small church, but they love going to church.
My question is why.
Do children naturally love to go to church?
Do children love to actually pay attention in church?
Do children naturally love to partcipate in church?
I don’t think so.
I don’t think that comes naturally.
We focused our lives on Jesus Christ.
We teach our children to read the Word.
We show them how to apply the Word to their everyday life.
We encourage them to worship God in song, with instruments, and above all with their lives.
We require them to go to church with their family.
They ask about it all week. “How much longer until we can go to church again?”
I want to encourage you to love the Word. Let that love be observed by your children. Teach them a love for God through His Word and attending church.
Do your children long to attend church services?
Don't forget to enter my contest over at my homesteadblog!
I'm not blogging on Sundays, so I won't be back until Monday.

I have really enjoyed using these books in our Homeschool. I want my kids to know what God has to say in His Word. What better way to learn than to have what he has to say on the topic all in one book?!?
Some of the subjects that I have coverd so far are:The Word of God on Healing,
The Word of God on Prosperity,
The Word of God on the Parables of Jesus Christ,
The Word of God on Being a Woman, a Wife, and a Mother,
The Word of God on Psalms,
and
The Word of God on Proverbs.

Contest at My Homesteadblog

I'm having a contest over at my homesteadblog!

As a prize, you get to choose from one of my ebooks!
http://www.homesteadblogger.com/CandyFoote/
Is it legal to enjoy reading your own book??? I did a Bible study with my five daughters and my only daughter-in-law (daughter-in-love). We used my book, "The Word of God on Being a Woman, a Wife, and a Mother" as a study guide.
Although the book is only a compilation of Scriptures, I thought I would share a bit of our study concerning the Scriptures.
The King James translation says, "I will make him an help meet for him."
The Webster's Dictionary states that help meet is two words - not one. With this in mind, I looked up the meaning of both words.
Just stop, think, and meditate on these meanings in regards to your being a help meet to your husband.
help:
-to make things easier or better for a person
-to aid
-to assist
-to give something necessary
-to do part of someone else's work
-to ease or share labor (to lift a load)
-to make things easier
-to aid in and promote the growth of
-to cause improvement
-to remedy, allieviate, and relieve
-to serve or to wait on
-to give assistance
-to be cooperative, useful, or beneficial
-to act as a waiter or servant
meet:
-a coming together
-an encounter
-to come face to face with or up to a person (or thing) moving from a different direction
-to come into contact, connection, or conjunction with
-to come into the presence or company of
-to get acquainted with
-to deal with
-to face
-to match (to meet angry words with a laugh)
-to deal with effectively
-to experience
-to comply with
-to satisfy
-to come together (from opposing directions)
-to be united
-to assemble
-to come together for discussion, bargaining, etc.
-to receive
Wow! That's a lot to think about.
This would be a great time to start a Bible notebook! My kids and I love ours!

Bible Notebooks
|
If you have followed my blog for any time at all, you must know that I love our Bible notebooks.
Since I seem to be focusing on our home and the Bible this week, I thought it would be a good time to repost about our Bible notebooks.
My kids are copying out of the Gospel of Luke.
They each spend ten minutes a day just copying out of the Bible.
The results are almost unbelievable!
The kids are memorizing Scripture, asking thought provoking questions, learning to write grammatically correct sentences, working on penmanship, and learning to spell correctly in just ten minutes a day!
This is low cost, minimal time, and highly educational learning!
It is also a very natural way of learning.
As soon as my kids start to learn to write - they write!
They copy everything they see without my directing them to do so.
Make sure you have plenty of paper on hand, though. How many of
your little ones practice their newly acquired writing skills on the walls,
the doors, the table, the......?
|
Need a place to keep all of that Bible copy work?
Boy, do I have the perfect place!
Have them start a Bible notebook.
I absolutely love our Bible notebooks.
All you need is a three-ring binder and some loose-leaf paper.
First, make a Table of Contents. Number and name all of the books of the Bible. Next, make title pages for each book. Ours also give the relationship that Jesus has to that book.
For example:
Genesis
Jesus is the Seed
Stick numbered tabs on each one of the title pages . Make sure that the numbers match the ones in the Table of Contents. This way it's a cinch to find the book you're looking for.
Then simply file all of your memory work, copy work, notes, favorite Scriptures, etc. in the right "book".
Hand your kids a Bible and a timer. Tell them to copy out of a certain book for a certain amount of minutes. At our house, it's Luke for 10 minutes (right now anyway).
For younger kids, you may want to copy down a certain amount of work, then have them copy from that. Just handing them a Bible and saying go to it may be too overwhelming.
Additional ideas could be:
- have kids read a chapter out of the Bible, then narrate or write a summary of that chapter.
- have kids listen to Bible "stories" and write or narrate what the story was about. Littler ones could just draw the story.
-add a "read through the Bible" chart to keep track of
all of the chapters and books read in the Bible.
-add a section to keep information concerning missionaries read about.
- add a section of favorite Christian songs and hymns
When finished, you will have a wonderful keepsake.
|
Bible notebooks - gotta have ‘em!
Let me know about your Bible notebooks.

Bible Discussions
|
Yesterday I talked about how we have our children read out of the Bible.
My favorite part of our Bible readings are the discussions that follow.
Everyone in the family has an opportunity to give their comments and opinions on what was read. “I don’t know” is not an answer.
Having your kids discuss what was read makes them have to stop and think about it.
If you don’t stop and think about what the Word is saying, how can you apply it to your life?
It’s not about just reading the Word. We must apply it to our lives.
I find that our family bonds through our discussions. It is really a wonderful part of our day.
I encourage you to start having Bible readings and discussions with your family through out the week.
Let me know how it turns out!
