Handbook of Nature

Posted in science

We are using Anna Botsford Comstock's Handbook of Nature Study this summer.

It is filled with six years worth of nature study!

I love this book!

It can be used as an indepth study or as a quick learning experience.

I just pay attention to what the kids are observe, or what happens to pop up in our daily lives.  Out comes the book!  I look over what I would like them to learn.  It only takes a few minutes.  Best of all, the kids are already interested in the subject at hand, so the information is really processed into their minds!

A Season of Science

Posted in science

Having trouble trying to get it all done?

Feeling inadequate for not being able to

work through every subject everyday?

Good news!!! You don't have to!

We have been having a great time focusing

on math and science for the past few weeks.

Wondering how we could just focus on science

and math?

Well take a look:

Bible study: We read "Science and the Bible" as a group,

along with some great discussions.

copywork: "science" Scriptures

"He stretched out the heavens."

"The heavens declare the glory of God."

writing: We wrote "science" poetry and

space adventurers.

spelling: Oh, so many '"science" words to

choose from.

a-s-t-r-o-n-a-u-t

U-r-a-n-u-s

reading: Each child read "science" library books and sections from

science textbooks to the rest of us.

We also continued having our family read alouds.

art: We drew the solar system and the phases of the moon.

memory work: We memorized the names of the planets, facts concerning

the planets, the speed of light, and a lot of vocabulary words.

Focusing on one or two subjects gives the kids a chance to really

learn what you are trying to teach!

Canning Jar Season

Posted in science

It's canning jar season again.

What's in your canning jars?

Green beans? Tomatoes? Blackberries?

Monarch butterfly caterpillars?

Assorted butterfly and moth caterpillars?

Hanging cocoons?

No?????

My kids love insects!

One of their great adventurers is to go

hunting for monarch butterfly caterpillars.

Have any mildweed? That's the place to

catch them. Grab a canning jar, put air holes

in the top, throw in some milkweed, and

place your caterpillar in his new temporary

home.

We check on ours daily! What excitement when

someone yells, "There's a cocoon!"

Last year the kids actually witnessed a

caterpillar spin a cocoon!

Well, what are you waiting for?

Get out your canning jars and head out

to the milkweed.

Enjoy watching a caterpillars wonderfull

metamorphosis!
