May. 14, 2008 Unit Celebration - '50's & '60's night
We try to wrap up some of our units from the Tapestry of Grace curriculum with a
unit celebration. I gave the kids a choice. We live near a resort area
where there are all kinds of '50's or '60's shows. I let them choose between
going to a show or doing our own celebration at home and surprisingly, they
all chose to do our own at home. So we created a "Jack's Burgers". We
thought about carhops but my driveway is gravel...they couldn't use skates.
We thought about the patio but it turned out to be a cold day. So we turned
our home into a diner.

My dd, Heidi, & I prepared all the food a little ahead of time. The wait staff seated
our patrons (older, married siblings and their families along with mom & dad).
They took orders and served the food. The kids created a cool '50's looking
menu. The menu consisted of hamburgers, corn dogs, fries, water, milk and
root beer floats. I got to enjoy sitting in the *diner* while Heidi and her
wait staff did all the serving. We had an oldies radio station streaming
online. Oh, and we all including our guests dressed for the era. After we
finished our root beer floats our guests wandered through the school room
looking at the kids' work displayed on their desks. It was a lot of fun and
came together relatively smoothly with a minimum of planning. |

Mar. 5, 2008 Dallas geTOGether
My dear husband totally blessed me and kept things together here for the weekend in early March while I drove to Dallas to spend four days with 30 wonderful women. Many of these I have known for almost four years but have never met in person. This was the first (annual!!!) Tapestry of Grace LooseThreads email list get together.
I drove to Tulsa on Friday to pick up Marsha (the only one that I had met before but just briefly) and we continued on to Dallas. When we arrived, there were several people that had also just arrived and we found each other immediately. All afternoon as we all trickled in we became great entertainment for the hotel lobby staff. I'm sure they thought it quite interesting how we ran up and hugged each other as if we had known each other for years and THEN introduced ourselves.
We had women that drove, and women that flew in from all over the country......Alaska, Hawaii, Maryland, Texas, Michigan, Louisiana, South Carolina, Oklahoma, California, Washington, & Missouri.
What a great time we had fellowshipping, laughing, eating, going without sleep, eating chocolate!!!
On Sunday, we had a brunch planned at the home of one of our moderators who lived in Dallas. The owner of the list, Dody, had just recently handed the list over to someone else because her youngest son would be graduating soon and she had become a realtor. Unknown to her, we had all been planning for months before this to bless her. We gave her a GPS system to help with finding her way around Alaska as a realtor, a scrapbook with memories from the families on the list, and a beautiful quilt made from frabric that ladies had sent in. She was totally astonished that we pulled this all off without her ever even getting a clue that we were up to something. Oh, and that was even with the *extra* surprise of socks!! Everyone brought a new, cute pair of socks to give to Dody all weekend long. She had no idea why we were doing this but thought it was funny. It wasn't until Sunday when we were about to giver her the surprises did we tell her that we were about to "Bless Dody's Socks Off"
Slowly, the group trickled down so that by Sunday night there were only twelve of us left. Then on Monday most of the rest of us caught planes or drove home. Thankfully, everyone made it home safely.
I'm going to upload pictures as soon as I can.
I came home to my wonderful family and gave lots of hugs. I got to sleep fairly early and jumped right in to our routine on Tuesday. Such fun!!! |

Feb. 3, 2008 Another homeschooler for Mike Huckabee

We had the privilege of seeing Mike in person on Friday night. There was a great crowd there on a cold, Friday night after a snow on Thursday.
Mike had some good things to say and, of course, was humorous. MO votes on Tuesday. We're pulling for him! |

If you have already looked at our family pictures you may have noticed that there were some missing kids. I have added the three boys that were missing. So go back and look at them again. : )
I just had to take the time to reduce the size of the pictures that I had so that I could upload them.
Now...to see if I can find pics of my married kids... |

Jan. 2, 2008 Up and Running...
Well, here I am trying to write my first entry in this blog. I intend to use this as a place to upload pictures and happenings to share with family and friends. I thought it would be a great way for the kids to also try their hands at blogging, etc...
I will give a brief introduction of our homeschool journey. Rick and I have been homeschooling our children (from birth, of course, but officially...) since 1985 when our oldest child turned five. So 23 years later we are still working hard at it and currently homeschooling seven of our eleven children. We have always been somewhat eclectic in our approach, picking and choosing what works and moving on from what doesn't for any given child and/or circumstances. This is our fourth year of using Tapestry of Grace and it has so enriched our family. We are very thankful to have found it.
We have graduated four children from our homeschool. B, 27, lives and works at home. We hire her to assist in the teaching, cleaning and laundry.
Next is our son, J, 26, who is married to a wonderful girl. J & L have two beautiful children ages 1 and 3. J has his own drywall texturing business. L is s full time SAHM.
Our daughter, S, is married also. S & B have four beautiful children ages 8 mos., 2, 3, & 4. B is an electrician and S is a full-time, SAHM. S has just started a jewelry business.
K is 20. She works full time for us in our drywall business in the office. She has taken 2 semesters at a Bible school and she is currently working on a writing course by correspondence.
As for the kids still homeschooling, J is 17 finishing up his last year of high school and working almost full-time for his older brother doing drywall texturing. He is also working toward building his own videography/film producing business.
H is 15. She is a freshman. She has been really been working on her drawing skills and enjoying it. She is a hard worker and is often called upon to babysit her nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters, and also bakes bread when she can squeeze in the time. She sings in our church high school choir.
A is almost 13 and is an avid reading. He can usually be found with a book in his hand at any given time. He is in 7th grade. He sings in our church jr. high choir.
T is 10 and enjoys drawing inventions. He is in 5th grade.
J is 8 and in 2nd grade. He is mischevious. He is usually seen sneaking up on someone or hiding somewhere.
K is 6 and in 1st grade. She still quite the little girl even in the midst of all these brothers but she does hold her own quite well among them. As someone at our homeschool co-op said of her...she is a cute little girl and quite the spitfire, quite able to keep up with her peers.
I is 4 and doing preschool work. He just thinks he's one of the big boys and tries hard to keep up with them.
Well, that's enough for now. Hope to post more soon. Happy New Year!! |
