Sunday, November 9, 2008 - Melrose Visits College

This was Family Weekend at Miss Languages's college, and of course, Melrose invited himself along, even though none of the events specifically mentioned being open to small pink monkeys.

Melrose managed to get in three photo-ops. He enjoyed the brunch on Saturday and did not ever realize college students dine with niceties like cloth napkins. Maybe he should study harder and go to college himself someday.

After brunch he stopped by the bookstore to get himself a T-shirt. Unfortunately, the only one close to his size did not appeal to him as it was not in college colors and had the cheesy "Somebody at * College s You" message, which primates tend to hate, and, it came with some sort of stuffed mouse already wearing it. Melrose did not think Mom needed any new buddies to compete for available shirts, accessories, and blogspace.

That afternoon Melrose made it to the football game. Devastatingly Handsome made an amazing catch on this ball at the break after the first quarter. Melrose enjoyed the band's half-time show and Mom was glad to be at a game with someone (Mr Music) who could actually explain what was going on. Amazingly, this was not from any experience with seeing games on his part, but with reading books about football. Remember: Bananaland is a TV-free zone, and the adults there are nearly completely sports-illiterate.

The big game was followed by dinner at a restaurant where this handsome fellow greeted Melrose inside the door. Melrose would have liked to stick around on the table there but Mom stuffed him in her bag and made him behave.

Melrose got to hang out in Mom's bag a lot. Melrose has a new theory as a result of spending a lot of time with college kids and will freely share it for what it's worth: Everyone learns things at the School of Hard Knocks. Only, some people learn it all from their own hard knocks, and some learn it from watching the hard lessons others learn, or hearing about those lessons later. Thus far, Miss Language is in the second camp, and even tries to warn some in the first camp from other things she's learned. Mom is glad to see that.
Add a banana!

How is ML adjusting to college? And how are *you* adjusting to her being away at college? It's a big change, isn't it? Mine went to college only 21 miles away, but it may as well have been 200 for all we saw him. (Note key word, "HIM". Not "her". I think that makes a difference.) To tell the truth, I was too busy to miss him, which might make me sort of a bad mom; I don't know. We moved just before he started, and then my 2nd went off to high school for the 1st time, so we had a lot going on. And though we did family orientation the previous spring and family welcome when he moved in, we never did that Family Weekend thing.

My 2nd will go next fall (I hope); we'll see how I do for that one! She doesn't plan to go locally, so it will be a little different. I'm just hoping she stays in the US.

Miss Language is a very smart young lady!
I must have gone to the wrong college. We didn't have cloth napkins at mine. Maybe you only get those at sleep away colleges.

Peace and Laughter!

Ahem. Two weeks is far too long to neglect posting without explanation. Are you grounded?
