It's time again for another tip on Tightwad Tuesday! Thank you to Mary over at Canadagirl for hosting this wonderful series. On to my tip for this Tuesday!
In keeping with my previous posts on making homemade packets (stir fry seasoning and taco seasoning), here is another simple item to make at home that your children will *love* you for. Homemade Chocolate Syrup. It's getting amazingly expensive to purchase these 'fun' additions to our homes, but I like to have them available for my children as a treat. What's childhood without chocolate milk, right?
I'll admit to a bit of skepticism when I made my first batch, but it has gone down so easily that I will need to make another batch soon. It tastes remarkably like Hershey's Syrup in the can, and is delicious in milk or over ice-cream. This batch made a pint for me, which I stored in two half-pint glass jam jars with the white plastic lid on top. This has lasted us a few months, but my boys don't drink chocolate milk as a daily drink. I hope your family enjoys this as much as mine!

Homemade Chocolate Syrup
-
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
-
1 cup tap water
-
2 cups sugar
-
1/8 teaspoon salt
-
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
In a 2 qt. saucepan, mix the cocoa and water with a wire whisk. Heat the chocolate water over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Add the sugar and continue to stir until the sugar dissovles. Bring the mixture to a full rolling boil. Reduce the heat to medium low and boil for a full 3 minutes. Remove the syrup from the heat.
Add the salt and vanilla, stirring to blend. Pour the syrup into clean container(s). Put a good lid on the jar and store it in the refrigerator.
