Show and Tell Friday...

Posted in Show and Tell Friday

It's time again for Show and Tell Friday with Canadagirl.  If you have something you'd like to share with bloggyland, please do participate, but be sure to visit Mary to sign up.

Now, as my most faithful readers know (all 3 of you), I miss the autumn season dreadfully.  I love the brisk morning air, the crunch of leaves underfoot, the frost on the ground, the smell of the air, the shortening of days, the holiday anticipation building, the smell of wood smoke, and snuggling under a blanket with a hot cup of anything.  I know, I don't know what I'm doing here in the desert, either.

Anyway, a friend of mine back in Michigan has a son turning 5 this month, and for one of their homeschool projects, they collected colored maple leaves and pressed them between wax paper.  Imagine my surprise and delight to open the mail after a particularly trying day this past Monday to find this piece of autumn all the way from Michigan:

Wasn't that so sweet of them?  I hung it over my kitchen sink, and gaze at it lovingly every time my glance catches it.

I think that we all get caught up in grand gestures that never really are seen through, and forget that it's the simple things in life that bring the most joy.  Now, who do I pass this forward to is the question of the day.

A tradition, isn't it? Fall leaves, some wax paper, and a hot iron. Do any children miss this favorite of all fall crafts? It's lovely and precious what you got in the mail....

I loved your first paragraph of this post - you described fall so beautifully! And then I smiled when you asked what you are doing in the desert.

That really was thoughtful of your friend in Michigan. I guess it just never occured to me that a simple gift like fall leaves would be meaningful to anyone. I'll have to remember that!

That is so sweet of your friend. I love that you hung them up in your window...not you have your own scene of falling leaves.
Be blessed,
Chasity

It's been years since I did that w/my kids. We often collect leaves, but don't always press them. Sometimes they sit in a pile and shrivel up, sometimes they are flattened in a thick tome & forgotten (only to be discovered months or years later), sometimes they are flattened and then used to decorate the mantle until the cat has finally knocked every one to the floor and attacked it to smithereens.

(I really need to write this in my *own* blog!)

Fuzz & I collected some leaves on Fri and they are currently being flattened in a dictionary & a thesaurus. We'll see what she wants to do w/them from there. (I don't think I've ever done the waxpaper thing with *her* --pity the poor youngest child).
I hear that Aquinas has over 100 *labeled* trees & makes a fabulous place for a "leaf hike". I considered going there Fri but gave in to "don't feel like it" (me, not the kids) b/c we do so much running other days. So next year YOU need to go and make me go with you. We'll bribe the kids to be happy and excited.

Thanks for all your comments last week. As for needing windows so I can see my clotheslines-- well, the windows that overlook them are all in bedrooms & bathrooms, which is part of the problem. My hubby has actually offered to try rigging up some sort of collapsible clothesline apparatus for the deck so it would be in front of my face all day, but I'm not too thrilled abt that. Yesterday he took all my clotheslines down b/c he figured it was "getting too cold for that now". Today I put a couple back up.

Oops, that was me. And b/c it was technically anonymous, I can't go back and correct my parenthesis error. *Sigh*
