Homeschool Curricula...
Posted in Tightwad Tuesdays

Happy Tuesday, and welcome back to Tightwad Tuesday with Canadagirl! If you have a money-saving tip that works well for you and that you'd like to share with us, please do head over and visit Mary to get started.
My tip for today is short, photo-less, and pretty unglamorous, but it's such a helpful little thing, especially in light of decreased home school budgets. I believe that selling used home school curricula on eBay is unavailable any longer if you have the 'answer' key or teacher's text with it (unless that policy changed again - I don't use eBay, so I don't know much about it), so what's a home educating mother to do? You could try to sell it locally, or, to reach a larger audience and get top dollar for it, you could use Homeschool Classifieds. Homeschool Classifieds is a site FULL of curricula for sale, all by home schooling parents. I both buy and sell my books there; where else can I support another home schooling family while having my own home schooling family supported? It's a wonderful thing, and it works for me. Ü

Thanks for the link ! I hope they have Canadian listings too. Or a link for Canadians. That border crossing kills the savings. ((sigh)) I tend to have things sent to my mom's a lot. I think I am also going to have to have a mailbox just across the border. It saves me a lot of money to have it sent there and then go down and cross the border and claim it myself. The broakerage (sp?) is what jacks up the prices to get it across the border. ((double sigh))

We a homeschool consignment store, and a Canadian homeschool internet book exchange. I'm sure there's something like that in the US as well.
For highschool texts, always make sure you're getting the current edition!

I've done several things...our local homeschool support group has a used curriculum sale every May. I sell alot there. Also online, as you've mentioned. HSLDA, if you're a member, has a swap/sale site.
Through someone's blog (was it Carol or Tina???), I got the idea recently to have a "curriculum lending library" type thing started. We're going to put together a website for our church (we're all homeschoolers) and close friends (so we all know each other well) can list what they have that is NOT for sale, but isn't being used, so could be borrowed by another family for the year. For example, I am saving math and history and other misc. curriculum for my boys, in case Jesus tarries in His return and they are blessed with kids to homeschool. (I know, this is a LONG-term vision!) They won't have to buy it...and math doesn't change, and I want them to have TRUTH in history, not the revisionist junk! So that's in boxes in my basement. Why not let someone else use it? Science I sell immediately after we're done...because it changes with new discoveries. Won't be any good 20 years from now!
Blessings,
Lori (aka Plans4You)

hey, thanks for this tip! i went to the website and found the two items i have been looking for, so i have emails out to the sellers asking whether they are still available (the items, not the sellers :-). one was just listed on oct 1, so i am hopeful!
i have a lot of stuff i want to sell, but have been hesitant to spend the $7 for an ad in our area-wide homeschool newsletter since the new schoolyear has begun and there won't be as much demand. our field trip group has a classifieds as well and that is free, but it only goes out to abt 30 families. i was going to box it all up again and wait for the big curriculum sale in june, but maybe this website will be just the ticket for getting rid of some sooner; i am going to spend some time getting familiar with it. funny thing, i googled for such a site a few weeks ago and didn't really get anything good.
i don't suppose you would happen to have chicago math algebra 1st ed teacher's manual...

I have one daughter who will go through a dozen books a week. Any subject, any topic, it just doesn't matter. Financially there is no way we can keep up with her, so I've started making weekly trips to the library. I check what they take out to make sure I approve and, because we live in a smaller town, sometimes we'll drive to a larger library to see what we can borrow from them.
