Homeschool, Public School and Private School

We've been primarily a homeschool family for the past 13 years - but we've also had kids in private and public schools.  We are not militant homeschoolers, and we believe that each of the education options has its pros and cons.  The poll results below caught my eye so I thought I would share it.  It's not as frightening as the adults who try to answer the basic questions Jay Leno asks them, but it's still a pretty bleak assessment.  Keep in mind that these were high school students ....

A Little Gathering for 4,000 of Our Closest Friends and Family

My buddy Mike Williams and I had a little get-together on Saturday and 4,000 people showed up.  Mike started a group called Feed Your Faith almost four years ago and for the past three and a half years I've been working with him to bring the best and brightest Christian speakers, authors and musicians to East Tennessee while raising money for those in need.  This weekend's event, the Feed Your Faith Marriage Conference featuring Kirk Cameron and Warren Barfield, was pretty amazing.  After six months of nonstop, frantic work organizing and promoting this event, the best part was finally kicking back and enjoying the evening performance with my Wife2Me.

There's a great news report from CBS about our conference at this link (it takes you to a written version of the story, but it has a link to the video near the top of the page).

Below are some photos from the Feed Your Faith Marriage Conference at Sevier Heights Baptist Church in Knoxville.  Photos are by Lynn Freeny (thanks Lynn) and Michelle Swaney (thanks Michelle).

To all 4,000 of our friends who turned out Saturday, we appreciate it.  If you had a good time, watch the Feed Your Faith web site for more upcoming events.

Finally ... Crop Circles Explained

From the Associated Press:

SYDNEY, Australia - Wallabies snacking in Tasmania's legally grown opium poppy fields are getting "high as a kite" and hopping around in circles, trampling the crops, a state official said.

Tasmania Attorney-General Lara Giddings told a budget hearing Wednesday that she had recently read about the kangaroo-like marsupials' antics in a brief on the state's large poppy industry. Tasmania is the world's largest producer of legally grown opium for the pharmaceutical market.

"We have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles," The Mercury newspaper quoted Giddings as telling the hearing. "Then they crash. We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high."

Now we can all rest a little easier knowing where crop circles come from.

Feed Your Faith Summerfest '09

The Feed Your Faith Summerfest '09 concert was in Knoxville this past week.  Feed Your Faith was started by my great friend, Mike Williams, and I have been working with him for the past few years.  The concert featured three of Christian music's hottest bands and took place at Sevier Heights Baptist Church.  Sanctus Real was the headline act and DecembeRadio and Decyfer Down opened for us.  My musical genius son, YoungestSon2Me, got to meet and hang out with the bands.  I'll post more pics later, but here's one of YoungestSon2Me with Sanctus Real after the concert (I have more posted on my Facebook page - there's a link on the right-hand column of this page).

Here are some of Sanctus Real.

Below is a video shot by one of OldestSon2Me's friends.  Matt, the lead singer from Sanctus Real, took his video camera during the concert.

So Unbelievably Proud ...

Tonight, OldestSon2Me asked me to proof a paper he wrote for his American History class.  It was titled, "Ronald Reagan - America's Greatest Leader."

After reading it, I turned and told Wife2Me that our son - the high school senior - had written a paper titled, "Ronald Reagan - America's Greatest Leader."

Wife2Me casually said, "Yes, I read it.  You've been preparing him to write that paper since he was two years old."

I was so stinkin' proud ... I got a little teary-eyed.

One more for SmallWorldAtHome ...

By popular demand (from Smallworldathome), I am posting one more shot of OldestSon2Me.

He's not so much about smiling ... but it works for him.  Such the tough-guy.

So stinkin' proud ...

OK, I brag on my children.  I joke about them here, but I have always been the biggest fan of FirstBorn2Me, Daughter2Me and Youngest2Me.  Today, I'm gonna' love all over my oldest.  He came into the world nearly three months early and hasn't been able to wait for anything ever since.  He's smart (too smart), funny, enjoyable to be around (most of the time), and downright beautiful.  He was accepted to the University of Tennessee (go Vols!) and has a huge future ahead of him being whatever he wants to be.  In spite of all of that, I'm posting all of this just so you can look at him.  Good grief ... could he be any better looking?

All I can say is, FirstBorn2Me, you got some good genes from your momma and pappa.  You should thank us every day ... all day, without ceasing.

"American Idol" and the American idol

From John Stewart's The Daily Show:  "Barack Obama has the Taylor Hicks syndrome.  He begged the whole world to vote for him -- and they did -- but now nobody's buyin' his records."
