Blind Driver's Education

11:42 PM, Mar. 22, 2006 .. Posted in Illinois Homeschooling .. 2 comments .. Link

I wish this was one of my tongue-in-cheek posts.  I wish it was an urban myth.  But, according to this Associated Press article, blind students in the Chicago area have to take Driver's Ed.

Why, you may ask, would a student who can't possibly drive a car (or at least not drive one using what you would learn in Driver's Ed) have to take this class?   "Hundreds of school districts in Illinois require students to pass driver's ed, although the state only requires that districts offer the courses. A state education official says districts that require it should exempt disabled students."  They have to pass a written "Rules of the Road" test just to graduate.

Once again, one-size-fits-all education for our children.  As one Yahoo discussion poster said (I'm not linking to the discussion because most of it was garbage) very tongue-in-cheek, "Another example of No Child Left Behind."

While it should be obvious that blind Driver's Ed is absurd, it may be less obvious that forcing children into little niches they don't fit into is equally absurd.  After all, it took a blind student filing a formal protest for her local Board of Education to even look into the matter.   Maybe it's not so obvious after all.

Re: drivers' ed- Geesh (roll eyes)!!!
Re: worm bins- very easy. We bought a rubbermaid type bin that is atleast 2 feet deep. We tossed in torn up newspaper dipped in water as well as dry torn up newspaper, leaves, grass, coffee grounds and everything but the kitchen sink. Then for the grand finale, we tossed in a handful of Red Wigglers (their official name!), complete with their babies and VOILA!: a worm bin. Our 4-H leader recommended "The Worm Book" by Loren Nancarrow and Janet Hogan Taylor and said there is plenty of info on the web. Hope that helps! We sure are having fun with them. We are officially farmers, now!

Got "Spring Fever"?
