It has been my goal for this schoolyear to include more physical activity in our weekly routine. So far things have gone quite well. We've started letterboxing, walked several trails we hadn't seen before, started a gym class at our co-op and dd and I have taught the 6yo to jump rope. But the nature walks which we combine with letterboxing are probably the most enriching.
I remembered to take the camera for the first letterboxing walk and enjoyed observing nature around me as much as the walk.
We saw this little garter snake early on in the journey, I'm glad I was quick with the camera because he was a speedy little fellow. At the beginning of the expedition we were very excited about engaging the kids in conversation about deciduous trees, critters and just about anything we came upon like this fungus growing on a fallen white birch.
But then I sort of got preoccupied with the fungus and became amazed at the many different types of mushrooms growing in our midst.
These were everywhere and to the unobserving eye they looked like autumn leaves that had just landed.
Aren't these pretty? They're small and almost unnoticable except their pinkness in an otherwise brown and green forest gives them away.
I love this last specimen and I left the picture enlarged so you could see them. I was astonished at how well camouflaged they were. Now aside from all the mushrooms, we did find the letterbox. Just after ds got his first bee sting.
Being his first, I really didn't know how his body was going to react so we didn't dawdle on our way home. It hurt at first but he kept his chin up and other than a rather large upper lip (the bee stung him exactly on the middle of it) he faired quite nicely. We didn't mention anything about his lip to him at first because I felt so bad and was worried it would get him nervous to know how big it was. But, I admit we giggled a bit when he said, "My lip feels funny, does it look different?" So we told him and took this pic so he could see what it looked like. There were two items I just had to take pictures of on the way back. One was this gorgeous plant.
A white baneberry. It has the neatest white opaque berries on it. I'm sorry my photo does not do it justice. We were in such a hurry by that point with the mosquitos biting us, and ds's big lip, I didn't have time to get a better shot.
Our last photograph is of this cool stripey frog which my 12yo named Tiggerfrog. Very original. LOL Based on its shape, size, markings and smaller tympanum, I'm thinking it is a female Green Frog. When dd found it there were two but the rest of us only saw this one. I wonder if the one that got away was her husband? |
